Anyone else noticed the language shift by Stonewall/Mermaids and some activists from “conversion therapy” to “conversion therapy practices”?

Very deliberate. Different meanings.

Iknowitisheresomewhere · 01/04/2022 07:18

Radio 4 now.

lovelyweathertoday · 01/04/2022 07:19

Nicki da costa was good.

Jane Fae on now.

tabbycatstripy · 01/04/2022 07:27

Jane Fae points out “mainstream church groups don’t have a problem with it”.

The Church of England might not, but they’re quite busy over-involving themselves in secular politics.

The government has to protect religious freedom. Although I think it’s a nonsense to suggest to a person that they can “pray the gay away”, and certainly wrong to try to force or pressure them, I believe if it’s what they want to try to do, it’s between them, their minister if they have one, and their god/gods/goddes/goddesses. Legislation needs to be carefully crafted so it doesn’t interfere in people’s spiritual affairs.

Probably not a popular view but there it is.

Dinosauria · 01/04/2022 07:30

I had to give up reading the BBC account on it.

AnnieLou12 · 01/04/2022 07:31

I have complained about that BBC news article only quoting religious groups as opposing a ban. I asked why no quotes from LGB Alliance etc, no mention of Cass report and why no explanation of why there are concerns over definitions of conversion therapy. Thanks for radicalising me Mumsnet! I don’t post here as not articulate enough but I do donate to the crowdfunders and give any political canvassers a grilling about sex based rights.

ResisterRex · 01/04/2022 07:40

Just caught up 👏🏻 Nikki (surely she lurks here)

The other caller made no real points on the topic. I've no idea what the point was about the online safety bill. The interviewer tried hard to pull them back but to no avail. No evidence presented at all.

I think the listener would have been confused by the second, and found Nikki's section easier to understand.

Blackandwhitehorse · 01/04/2022 07:52

Agree with others the BBC report is shockingly bias, we shouldn’t have to complain each time to our national Broadcaster to get neutral reporting on this subject.

They even use the word cisgender ffs

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 01/04/2022 07:52

Delighted to see plans to ban gay conversion therapy! that has no place in the modern world.

lovelyweathertoday · 01/04/2022 07:53

Apologies for spelling mistake Nikki!

nauticant · 01/04/2022 07:58

I've no idea what the point was about the online safety bill.

The other guest was Jane Fae. JF is a supporter of "certain kinds of pornography". They were shoehorning that interest into the interview and it's a shame they weren't to reveal more of their agenda.

DERFDogmaExlusionary · 01/04/2022 08:20

Hmm I wonder if it was planned this way.
I wondered that too

@KittenKong

It was in R4 - their LGBetc correspondent did a woeful attempt of explaining why T was separated.

Allllll all the bad religious types and nasty GCs forcing poor trans kids into suicidal thoughts and depression…

BBC - unbiased as ever…

If you complain to the BBC about bias their latest response is to say that they identify as not being biased.

Hence why I identify as having paid my tv licence.

KittenKong · 01/04/2022 08:35

Did they use the C Word? Because I will certainly add that to the complaint. Why does their LGBetc corespondent NOT point out the danger to young people of NOT being able to discuss / explore their feelings? He does know that ids copy why they see on tv - and with Disney announcing that they want 50% characters as LGB (etc etc) - since the MD(?) has said that she has one trans child and one (I forget what - but under the umbrella), hoe does he think this will pay out with children copying?

Blackandwhitehorse · 01/04/2022 08:41

Yes @KittenKong they did - ideological capture

Government ban on conversion therapy dropped
AnnieLou12 · 01/04/2022 08:42

The BBC’s LGBT correspondent, like those of other news outlets, seems to be an activist rather than a reporter.

MoonOnASpoon · 01/04/2022 08:44

Also presumably it's not just for "cis" people anyway. Trans people can be gay. It is not excluding trans people, it is excluding trans "conversion therapy" because of the risks of reasonable and necessary exploration being criminalised.

KittenKong · 01/04/2022 08:54

Who came up with the C word again ?in this context)?

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 01/04/2022 09:06

They did. I already complained.
tabbycatstripy · 01/04/2022 09:37

Nancy Kelley: ‘On the day @GalopUK data makes clear that 11% of trans people are harmed by conversion practices BY THEIR OWN FAMILY, and in a world where CT for trans kids is OPENLY ADVERTISED the UK media is STILL letting people say "it doesn't happen here" without challenge.’

The eagle-eyed might spot the further linguistic and conceptual shift. Not “conversion therapy” anymore. The therapeutic setting has been removed. Now “conversion practices” by family members.

The true target is criminalising parents for saying, “No, dear, you are actually a girl. Now how about a film?”

PrelateChuckles · 01/04/2022 09:39

If two people are in a same-sex relationship, then one of them changes gender, Stonewall says they are no longer a homosexual couple.
Is that an LGB conversion practice?

PrelateChuckles · 01/04/2022 09:40

Or if a child is at a gender clinic, and their parents are pushing for gender change so that the child will no longer be gay, is that not a conversion practice?

Because gender clinic staff say that this is taking place.

nauticant · 01/04/2022 09:41

Before it was "everything is transphobic" and now added to that is "everything is conversion therapy practices".

There is a way round this of course, and that's a default "yes" answer to everything demanded by trans activists.

Helleofabore · 01/04/2022 09:43

tabbycatstripy

And ultimately the govt saw through the smoke screen that NK has now blown away.

It was always about the therapeutic angle. It was in other countries and it was here. They just tried to lie and deny it.
