Exactly. The problem is most ppl won’t look that far into it & the reporting of it is very superficial

jkrfan · 31/03/2022 20:04

@tabbycatstripy

If I wanted to get rid of Freer and Herbert and Brady and the rest of them, this is how I’d do it as well. Give them a plank, watch them walk it.
Yep let them go..presumably they are leftovers from when Theresa May was failing to exercise her grey cells around T issues. I am even wondering if they were allowed to draft such a load of rubbish so it could ultimately be quoshed. I was really surprised that Liz Truss was the covering signature on the proposal given other things she had said.
Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 31/03/2022 20:06

Government statement blaming it in cost of living and Ukraine saying they need to revise legislative priorities is just complete bollocks

Tell the truth you cowards!!

Hasselhoffsheadband · 31/03/2022 20:11

The thing is, it's not even that difficult to understand or discuss?

Why not just say, 'we are rethinking this, because we do not want a situation where people can be proesucted for giving counselling to a gender questioning child who wanted puberty blockers'? Confused

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 20:14

I’m going to take a minute away from unseemly glee to think about the poor kids Stonewall, Mermaids, li’l OJ, David Paisley, Patrick Harvie, and all the rest, will now rile all the way up, convincing them they’re going to be dragged off to priests and therapists to be brainwashed out of ‘being who they are’.

If you’re reading this, kids (and you’ve probably got better things to do) this isn’t going to happen. Or, if it does, you can call the police. Forced therapy and assault are already illegal in this country.

ResisterRex · 31/03/2022 20:23

^We must now focus on a very real conversion therapy scandal that is taking place as we speak: the large number of girls, many of them lesbian, who believe that if they are gender non-conforming they may need to change their bodies with drugs and surgery.
5/6
The interim Report from the Cass Review, which is investigating the surge in young people seeking to make permanent changes to their bodies, is where we should now focus our attention.^

This is really important from the LGBA. It's a scandal that is damaging mostly girls. It's high time we started providing girls with a much better society to live in.

So we are losing the argument LOJ? Smile Only in your delusional world.

Helleofabore · 31/03/2022 20:27

This is some welcome news. Considering the protections already in place for LGB, I hope this will also now open up lots of discussion with Dr Hilary Cass' team about the adolescent treatment of gender dysphoria.

LizzieSiddal · 31/03/2022 20:40

I wish people, who are supposed to be intelligent journalists, would do some research! Have any of them actually read the Cass Review?

DomesticatedZombie · 31/03/2022 20:51

[quote PrelateChuckles]Worth a read re a lawyer's perspective of it

That's great, although the long list of ways in which parents can harm their children is giving me the guilt Confused.

Ditto MPs who are legislators in Parliament.

It really is time the people we elect started acting more professionally and have a full understanding of issues before they sound off on twitter.

DoobryWhatsit · 31/03/2022 21:00

I still can't get my ahead around how affirming someone's identity (as in "all men/women are perfectly acceptable and valid examples of their own sex, no matter how they dress/behave/present, even if they go against all the toxic stereotypes they're constantly bombarded with") can be seen as "conversion" therapy anyway. Surely it's anti-conversion therapy if its anything 🤔

DomesticatedZombie · 31/03/2022 21:02

Transgender Trend: We are very pleased the government has announced that it is abandoning plans for a conversion therapy bill. We applaud the government for listening to and taking seriously the concerns of clinical professionals and parents, rather than being swayed by activists for the sake of scoring political points. This is a good decision for the protection of children and young people experiencing gender-related distress, and the government must be commended for putting children first.

The proposed conversion therapy bill was muddled and open to interpretation, exposing children and young people to further risk of an ideology-based approach which only confirms a transgender identity.

Children experiencing gender dysphoria deserve the highest standard of clinical care in line with other paediatric mental health support services, as highlighted in the Cass Interim Report. A legal ban on ‘transgender conversion therapy’ would have further politicised an area of child and adolescent care that urgently needs to be separated from politics and ideology.

Pluvia · 31/03/2022 21:10

This is wonderful news for parents, young people and anyone else caught up in the horror of this social contagion. The government has recognised the homophobia inherent in the proposals — and also that it would give free reign for zealots to herd young people into mutilation and a debilitating drug regime without opposition.

Now we need a new therapy accreditation organisation founded on gender atheism and feminism.

titchy · 31/03/2022 21:14

I do wish the issues had been more clearly articulated. Actually I wish they had been articulated full stop. Unfortunately unless people realise that the definition of conversion therapy included perfectly sensible psychotherapy for children, and that's why people are relieved it's been kicked into the long grass, it'll just reinforce the opinion that Maya, Sex Matters, JKR et al are not only transphobic but homophobic too. Sad

The more this goes on the more I feel inclined to vote in a way that is most likely to keep Labour out of government. Until Labour comes to their senses it's clear that them forming a government will see a tsunami of new laws to push gender identity ideology and none of them will contain a scintilla of critical thought. They will all be crowd-pleasers to keep trans activists on side.

tabbycatstripy · 31/03/2022 21:21

Look at Biden today. He sounded like a Crusader.

nauticant · 31/03/2022 21:28

Looking at the past 48 hours, on balance I'll take Jamie Wallis as the poster boy for self-ID and the ashes of a Trojan Horse as a win.

Nikki da Costa thread:

Given profound unintended consequences this bill would have had for children struggling with gender dysphoria it is right decision. There is an extremely strong network of existing law providing protection against conversion therapy 1/

As set out in the consultation - what has been seen as CT is already criminalised under Sexual Offences Act, Criminal Justice Act, Offences Against the Person Act, Communications Act, Protection from Harassment Act, Public Order Act, Serious Crime Act, Domestic Abuse Act 2/

It is very hard to get this legislation right regarding gender identity and children. The Equality and Human Rights Commission flagged the complexities and urged caution, and the way issues were being glossed over 3/

And the Cass Review interim report focussing on treatment of children with gender dysphoria sets out why we cannot go blundering into this without considering the complexities and that there is already a chilling effect on provision of clinical care because of polarisation 4/

Some may seek to spin this, whipping up fear, glossing over issues, but there is very poor evidence that CT is happening in the UK (admitted in consultation document) AND an existing network of legislation. These are some things that govt is doing and can be done...5/

A helpline and/or instant messaging service with suitably trained call handlers, and an online education resource that details the law on conversion therapy, and forms of support available to victims (tendering process opened in November 2021) 6/

I would hope, guidance to police, prosecutors and statutory services setting out how existing offences may be committed in the course of conversion therapy and that these services need to recognise and act on the problem 7/

Would it be possible to amend sentencing guidelines to include conversion therapy as an aggravating factor in assaults or other existing criminal offences? 8/

Would like to see an action plan to tackle the unacceptably long waiting lists for gender identity services while maintaining/strengthening appropriate safeguarding for children depending on Cass Review 9

And I hope in general that there will be a boost to Children and Adolescent mental health services to ensure all children are supported including those questioning identity and orientation 10/

  • which all looks very sensible to me.
Rhannion · 31/03/2022 21:35

The politicians in this whole country are, with a handful of notable exceptions, spineless, venal, greedy, pompous, lying cowards.

DomesticatedZombie · 31/03/2022 21:36

Twas ever thus, Rhannion.

nauticant · 31/03/2022 21:36

I just feel that Labour in digging their holes more deeply and ramping up their rhetoric are building up such a debt of expectation, they will have no choice but to give a legislative bonanza to trans activists.

The consequences in not doing this would make the Lib Dems U-turn on tuition fees look like a relatively minor matter.
