Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

Never heard of her.

What's it all about?

NotTerfNorCis · 09/09/2021 20:59

Why has this suddenly happened? People digging up old tweets and attacking?

Iworkedhardforwhatihave · 09/09/2021 21:00

Her tweets were disgraceful.

SparklingLime · 09/09/2021 21:00

I think her being cast in a panto was the trigger.

QueenPeary · 09/09/2021 21:00

I follow several trans allies for various reasons and she is one. She sometimes makes me laugh and I find her interesting. I actually really admired her apology. You don't often see a heartfelt, unreserved apology and acceptance of criticism as she has. She's also far from the only person to do what she did and many others men don't get any comeback for it.

I don't really like any kind of Twitter pile-on, whoever it is. Not even Owen Jones! It's mob justice and regressive.

QueenPeary · 09/09/2021 21:02

(Not that I'm defending what she said. But it wasn't so long ago when it was common to make those kinds of comments and many comedians did. Yet they are not all punished for it - only some.)

ParkheadParadise · 09/09/2021 21:06

I'm more shocked the Scottish Government pay people to appear on adverts.
I know she said she will donate her fee but 12k for an advert is bloody ridiculous.

rabbitwoman · 09/09/2021 21:06

She is the Scottish stand up comedian who held up a sign saying 'Trump is a ' at the airfield when he visited.

And that is kind of the level of most of her humour. She can be hilarious but she is vicious and pretty foul mouthed - no more so then Frankie Boyle, though.

And it would appear that she has happily ripped into any demographic for years - the disabled, black people, Jewish..... and targeted individuals such as 50 Cent and Snoop Dog... But again, like Frankie, the trans community are sacred and she has ripped into anyone who raises questions.

She's a fan of cancel culture but now seems to be on the receiving end. I don't feel very pleased, though - I have had enough! I would rather accept her apology and move on.....

2011 - 2016 is hardly " historic" tweets.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/09/2021 21:09

Her tweets were horrific. She is very overhyped as a comic. I think she is accidentally funny sometimes. A lot of her "humour" consists of being foul mouthed. She was always a bad choice to voice government adverts (as she is very divisive) and I am glad she has been pulled from those.

I also think (though not sure) that a lot of the tweets aren't that old, and certainly not from when she could be reasonably described as immature.

I agree with the OP however, the kicking she is getting on twitter is horrible and going way to far. From what I have seen it is mostly Unionists piling on as she is a great friend of NS.

Do you find these tweets interesting? One tweet read: “F*sake That horsey face black wummin on Xfactor is flashing her tits...is this not a kids show” Another said: “Kelly does speak like the stereotyped black Aunt Jemima who stands on a stool in the Tom & Jerry cartoons screaming ‘TOM TOM.” A third tweet from Ms Godley described the Ms Rowland as “the black horse from USA”. Another said: “If Kelly talks like a ghetto blaster racist black chick am gonna punch her rice and peas

Is it Ok because she paints herself as a ‘trans ally’?

Duckypoohs · 09/09/2021 21:13

I used to really like her, not so many women like her in comedy and she has lead an interesting life. Her insufferable smugness criticising Graham linehan and others leads me to go meh. Maybe she will gain a bit of perspective/empathy.

No, I'm not defending those tweets at all. The reasons I have found her interesting/funny at times have been nothing to do with those, which I only saw today.

Is it Ok because she paints herself as a ‘trans ally’?

No, if I thought they were OK (which I don't) that would be the least of my reasons. I'm GC and absolutely opposite to JG in my views on that.

Duckypoohs · 09/09/2021 21:19

I had no idea about the racist tweets, cba with twitter. Jesus those are pretty horrific.

rabbitwoman · 09/09/2021 21:26

Oh yes, undoubtedly the tweets are awful.

Indefensible - and actually not even witty. Just foul.

This is the kind of treatment she meeted out to anyone who questioned the established Trans Rights position in Scotland, also.

But it just seems that this is enough now. Let's cancel all charges against Marion Millar and call it evens.....

(also, frankly janey seems quite vulnerable to me. It is not an excuse. I just think now would be a good time to take a breath and REALLY look at what we are doing to each other.....)

YellowClouds · 09/09/2021 21:28

Some of her tweets are awful, racist and disabilist. They are also not that historic, she tweeted them as a woman in her 50s old enough to know better, not as a youngster.

I think she accidentally done well out of the pandemic and has sort of moved away from comedy to some sort of political covid preacher and I think that got a lot of people's backs up as it was very 2 faced. For weeks her and her daughter have been all around the country doing work, meeting people - which is absolutely fair enough. But then knowing she had an ad campaign coming out started making very sad faced videos and saying how scared of covid she was and people shouldn't be meeting up. Quite hypocritical.

That aside, she very much plays the victim but some of her tweets and voice clips I've heard are just too much. Think the Scottish Gov teamed up with her too quickly without thinking it through.

NiceGerbil · 09/09/2021 21:28

Generally I really dislike the dredging of old stuff on Twitter esp some bloke recently who posted some stuff which got called misogynist when he was 15 or something and it was a. Mild and b. He didn't write stuff just joined in which is a bit different.

However.

While stupid shit written at 15 is one thing, stupid shit posted 5 years ago when you were 55 is not the same thing.

And that comment I read is yikes.

Having said that Frankie Boyle has said some utterly appalling stuff and well he seems to get away with it so is there sexism at play here.

Dunno.

PronounssheRa · 09/09/2021 21:28

There are huge amounts of tweets and voice recordings of her being racist, ableist. Very offensive language. She isn't a child these are all fairly recent. She sounds fucking awful and has encouraged bullying of others on twitter.

You won't get reasonable debate with someone like Janey.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 09/09/2021 21:29

Her problem is she has blocked most of the internet. So she believes her own hype.

The problem is not what she said, that's not a secret, she's not hidden it. The problem is that someone at the scottish government didn't do due diligence before making her the face of the new covid campaign.

This is what happens when you don't listen to people. Holyrood is an echo chamber and someone has really fucked up.

Janey has piled on many, many people. I'm not that sympathetic, though I do think she's been dumped from a shitty height for someone else's mistake.

Am looking forward to the Daly Record, LOJ, Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, the Scottish Trans Alliance, Patrick Harvie, and Nicola Sturgeon all standing up for her.

Nothing so far, I see.

334bu · 09/09/2021 21:30

Nothing makes mocking disabled people and posting racist tweets acceptable.

TheyreTheSamePicture · 09/09/2021 21:31

Those tweets were absolutely awful, and she was a grown woman when she posted them not that long ago. I’m really surprised at them actually.

She does seem vulnerable and very desperate to be liked

PronounssheRa · 09/09/2021 21:32

Janeys tweets

Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....
ditalini · 09/09/2021 21:32

What I don't get is that everyone knew JG was like this. Everyone knew that she was foul mouthed, her 'humour' was largely based on attacks, her persona absolutely was based on being non-pc. It's not like any of this was a secret but it seems to have been decided at some point that she was now an excellent ambassador for modern, SNP Scotland, largely based on a Trump sign and a willingness to attack anyone who spoke out in favour of women's rights.

If the government have got a red face over this then they only have themselves to blame.

Velveteena · 09/09/2021 21:34

The tweets are fucking appalling. I've never had much of an opinion on her, never found her particularly funny but wasn't bothered by her either. It seems she's enjoyed creating pile-ons herself in the past and now she's taking flak for her own actions. No one forced her to be a racist. The phrase 'cancel culture' gets bandied around so much these days but usually it's just someone not enjoying having to face the consequences of their own actions.

If she hasn't already she should log off Twitter as I can imagine the volume of angry messages could be quite overwhelming.
