Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

Does anyone know why The Daily Beast were investigating her old tweets? Is there a backstory to that? I'm English and had no idea who Janey Godley was until this blew up so why were US journo's interested in her?

QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 07:53

kimiko I haven’t said anything about how young she was, in fact I said it was quite recently that a lot of people came out with this stuff (NOT that that makes it ok.)

I did think her apology seemed genuine and she has said she deserves all she gets, and that’s the right thing to do - of course you can’t know how genuine anyone is but she seems mortified (as she should be).

However as I also said since that post, it’s actually worse than I’d realised and I unfollowed her because I don’t want to be seen as supporting or condoning her.

I agree that it seems odd - maybe because of anti Trump protest but that seems like old news.

WarriorN · 10/09/2021 07:59

Have to say I'm not to keen on the pile on either.

I felt Kellie Jay was reasonably respectful and made points that JG had never protested against worse regimes than Trump, and so it was just a publicity stunt and described her well known abuse of women for standing up for sex based rights.

I'm not sure Frankie Boyle would ever get the same treatment by everyone and their goldfish.

I think it was because the SG were using her in an ad campaign.
Ekofisk · 10/09/2021 07:59

The journo is Jamie Ross - he’s a Scottish reporter based in London, formerly Scotland correspondent for Buzzfeed and ex BBC Scotland.

WarriorN · 10/09/2021 07:59

She also made the point she's a conservative campaigner.

WarriorN · 10/09/2021 08:00

Or been

QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 08:00

(I genuinely can’t condone her either - I just don’t like anyone being piled on, even if they deserve it.)

WarriorN · 10/09/2021 08:06

No, I don't condone her either.

Ekofisk · 10/09/2021 08:07

Godley has been lauded in the US - here’s an article in the WSJ from January describing Godley as “The Secret Ingredient in Scotland’s Covid Fight: Comedy”.

She's being 'coached' by the SNP Equalities convener who arbitrates who gets redemption & who is irredeemable atm. Fiona Robertson has deemed Godley worthy of forgiveness & rehabilitatable. Her words were along the lines of " if the person is willing to learn and engage then great! ... It's when they double down that removing them from communities becomes necessary."

Robertson sees herself as the person to determine who gets to perform sorry & whether the person should be 'removed from communities'. There's a lot of ego & powertrip going on with her. Not only does she revel in the ability to trigger social exclusion, she thinks it's in her gift to determine other people's 'humanity'.

Godley has worded her apology as she's been told to, to try & navigate her way through this to 'redemption'. She seems to genuinely be distressed by what's happening but she's been pulled up for her awful past tweets before & brushed it off. Why it's now come back to haunt her? Being employed by the government to front a health campaign takes you up a level of scrutiny & integrity & she just doesn't meet the threshold.

She's in the 'good graces' of the SNP & the FM & will be back. She'll not learn from the pile on to stop her own targeting & pile ons of other though. But she'll be insufferable in her moral superiority having 'been through a journey'.

ChaToilLeam · 10/09/2021 08:16

She’s awful, vociferous against anyone disagreeing with her agenda, and a bit thick. Afraid I cannot muster up much sympathy for her, seeing as how she is such a fan of cancel culture herself.

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/09/2021 08:21

Slightly unrelated but I don't think I realise how coordinated some things are on SM like Twitter (there's a flash alert system, if I understand this correctly?):

twitter.com/MainelyMandy/status/1436051230304964612?s=20

As ever, I'm quite taken aback by the low threshold for what is styled as a 'dogpile'.

I'd no idea that Godley was responsible for 'dogpiles' on others. As above, never mind general apologies, has she apologised to those individuals to whom she did this? They're the apologies that count.

I also have to wonder how long Twitter will be usable for any contentious topic if there are roving bands of 'supporters' for whatever cause, waiting to be triggered into presence as a means of support rather than discussion.

Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

She obviously been enjoying cancel culture up til now

She should be dead chuffed that its still working well

I know people use the words ‘pile on’ on here, which seems to mean ‘everyone is disagreeing with me’ and is telling me so

Is it the same sort of thing on twitter? Or due to the set up is it worse?

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:27

I can’t stand her - she is cringey and reminds me of the embarrassing weegie auntie that turns up at family dos, gets ratted, gets loud, then tries to snog the vicar.

This is what the Scottish government want - the public stocks for anyone found to have hurt anyone’s feelz.

Marion Milar has been dragged to court for less, to much cheering from people like Janey.

QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 08:28

Hmmmm - but there are numerous slebs with plenty of good advice and coaching who can only manage rubbish apologies.

Ugh I feel like I’m still coming over like i’m on her side and I’m not. But I do think if someone apologises, you can’t somehow magically know it’s not real. Plenty of people do that crappy half apology (“sorry IF I offended anyone”) and get lambasted for it not being a proper, full apology. She’s done a proper full apology - it can’t make up for her nastiness but it is a full apology. And now you say well it’s just an act.

This the kind of pile-on mentality I don’t like. The person did wrong so they must be destroyed and anyone who doesn’t agree with the pile on is also fair game.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 10/09/2021 08:28

Should have refreshed as ive basically said what embarrassing said….I…got distracted by the tv

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:28

@Bluesheep8

Never heard of her
She’s been on Have I Got News for you a few times. Plays the professional weegie.
QueenPeary · 10/09/2021 08:31

I agree the individuals she’s abused should get apologies too. Same goes for frankie Boyle, etc.

OperationDessertStorm · 10/09/2021 08:31

“Removing them from communities” sounds sinister as fuck.

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:31

I love the idea of her apologising to Snoop and her saying ‘and who the hell are you?’

KittenKong · 10/09/2021 08:32

Him not her. Snoop...

Not buying the "full apology" at all. She is odious. She knew perfectly well how vile she was being and she intended to hurt. Her apology is simply better written than most.
