Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....
StealthPolarBear · 09/09/2021 21:37

I used to vaguely like her, followed her on Twitter, I didn't know she was vile. I stopped following her when she told anyone GC to bugger off or similar can't remember the details. I'm sad to see she's all round nasty.

Duckypoohs · 09/09/2021 21:38

Tbh I only knew from the Richard herring podcast, pretty surprised at the racism.

ISpyCobraKai · 09/09/2021 21:40

I loved her, I'd only seen her voice overs which were great, and v funny.
It's only fairly recently I'd looked into her a bit further and realised she's awful.

NovemberWitch · 09/09/2021 21:41

No pity that she’s being eaten alive for her racist, disablist and generally foul humour. Not so much fun when you’re the one being targeted for your views.
She was more than happy to unleash her venom on others for less reason.

Velveteena · 09/09/2021 21:43

actually I did find some of her Sturgeon voiceovers quite funny.

Gimlisaxe · 09/09/2021 21:52

I knew her from years and years ago, when I read one of her books, they are heartbreaking, however it doesn't excuse any of the tweets she has sent and while you may think her apology was good, I think she is still trying to justify it all.

CharlieParley · 09/09/2021 21:58

@Velveteena

actually I did find some of her Sturgeon voiceovers quite funny.
So did I. After interacting with her though and especially after seeing her lay into another survivor who dared disagree with her on Polanski, I disengaged, unfollowed and blocked because I felt no need to put up with so much unprovoked nastiness. Every. Single. Day.

I still think the current pile on is unhealthy, but I think that anyway, whoever it is. It's just not necessary. I do not however blame anyone who was at the receiving end of her nastiness feeling that she is reaping what she sowed.

NiceGerbil · 09/09/2021 21:59

I do think that there are male comedians who get away with terrible stuff. So I do think that the response is sexist to some extent.

What's her fixation with Chernobyl?? Anyone know? That's lousy.

I couldn't read all the tweets too small.

The collection of tweets are more readable in this link. Can't check if they are all genuine because janey has locked her account.

I agree re male comedians, Frankie Boyle has said some awful things, with no impact on his career

NiceGerbil · 09/09/2021 22:09

Thank you but I'd have to dig my reading glasses out and too comfy!

I think I have the gist.

The one in the article linked appalling.

If that's her style and always has been then...

Has Frankie Boyle ever apologised? Pretty sure he hasn't. I think he said it's comedy if you don't like my comedy then fuck off. Or similar.

Babdoc · 09/09/2021 22:11

NiceGerbil, she uses Chernobyl as a metaphor for genetic radiation damage causing serious abnormalities in people she wishes to mock for their appearance or limited intelligence.
She apparently believes this to be “humorous”.
I find her utterly unamusing and her language ignorant and repulsive. She also seems to be loved by SNP supporters, which is the final straw as far as I’m concerned!

rabbitwoman · 09/09/2021 22:16

Janey Godley is similar to frankie Boyle in her delivery, a kind drawl of vitriol, and the humour is in being as vile and descriptive as possible without actually being terribly witty.

I could do that. But I am far too nice!!

I am wondering why Marion Millar's tweets fell foul of the Scottish hate crime bill and not janey Godley, though. Okay, so no one cares about insulting and threatening women, but janey's tweets were, without a shadow of a doubt, full of nasty racism. It's not even over sensitive to point it out. They are as hateful as it is possible for a tweet to be, surely.....?

Ok I’ve now seen enough that I have to unfollow her, I had thought it was good for her to apologise genuinely but, I hadn’t been aware of all the content until this thread.

I too am baffled if these tweets were so recent and not hidden, why haven’t they been raised before, or when they first appeared?

TheyreTheSamePicture · 09/09/2021 22:20

I was going to say this - I’d have thought these tweets would have been revealed before now, or she’d have deleted them when she started becoming more widely known. Unless there’s a way of showing deleted tweets?

MarieKlepto · 09/09/2021 22:21

I've never liked her but have friends who have, for years, thought she's hilarious. Funnily enough they are all from better backgrounds, with better lifestyles and very politically aware, woke if you like (although I'm not terribly keen on that term). Always felt they thought it such a laugh that a working class woman was ripping her class to bits and attributing views to them like they were all the same.

Maduixa · 09/09/2021 22:27

I saw her bit at the Edinburgh Festival in 2018, and it was painfully awful. Wild, exaggerated, specifically anti-American and generally anti-tourist shite, and just stupid. She very loudly and self-promotingly misunderstood a question about Edinburgh that would not only be asked by a foreigner, but also by a Scot who didn't know Edinburgh.

Specifically, she wanted the audience to be angry with her that foreigners asked how to get to Edinburgh Castle, while Edinburgh Castle was firmly in view. This shook me out of my previous "oh, maybe it's OK if she's a bit sexist (her misuse of "cunt" to get attention): she is on my side" torpor by its sheer viciousness and insensitivity and stupidity. And I felt sorry for her too: all the world comes to Edinburgh once a year in August (something I've always thought Scotland should be proud of!) and she has the chance to learn from that, but instead she just ... spews xenophobic hate and prejudice. There are people all over Scotland who would love to attend the Festival and meet people from around the world and can't.

I don't like non-substantiated Twitter, etc. takedowns, but given that you're worried about them, I'm not sure how you would have preferred this to play out in the public sphere? People in Scotland have every right to expect that their government not pay out public monies to fund someone who makes Scotland looks bad on the world stage. And believe me, as a Scot living elsewhere in the EU - no one knows who Janie Godley is, but whizz like hers does get repeated and does add up to make Scotland look bad. And that's bad for Scotland, if it ever is in a position to be independent and to seek EU accession.

What did you want to happen differently?

NiceGerbil · 09/09/2021 22:27

@Babdoc

Ok thanks.

I did a physics degree and had a big interest in nuclear / particle physics etc.

From curie dying, to the treatment of the women in USA who painted watch faces (really interesting and awful if anyone interested) to Chernobyl and the scientists who went in because the robots conked out in the face of the radioactivity.

Then of course all the rest of it. Chernobyl FFS.

So I know my jumping on that seemed weird with all the other stuff but that's why.

So she makes racist 'jokes', and enjoys referring to a nuclear disaster in order to insult people. And more couldn't read the tweets.

The Chernobyl thing is a pathetic insult anyway. If anyone said it to me I wouldn't feel insulted just think well that's weak. And not being able to come up with a better insult doesn't say much for your intelligence.

A few pp have mentioned Frankie Boyle - you may find this article interesting. www.spectator.co.uk/article/spare-us-frankie-boyle-s-lecture-on-offensive-comedy

I think it's positive that some of the cancellers are starting to feel the wrath of cancel culture themselves. Hopefully it will hasten the end of it and we can all go back to freedom of speech and democracy. I mean, she'll still be a nasty piece of work, just like Frankie Boyle, but I'd rather have these people out in the open for all to see that driven into protected twitter bubbles to fester away.

YellowClouds · 09/09/2021 22:31

I think the big difference between her and the likes of Frankie Boyle, and probably the reason the tweets are being brought to attention now is that frankie and most other comedians don't try to pretend to be/aim to be the voice of the nation.

She was also on the government payroll promoting a government health policy and pushing the SNP narrative. I don't know of any other comedian who has ever done that. I think that's a big difference here.

She has also been an instigator in leading 'pile ons' against others, so some will see it as karma.

I imagine someone in the SNP will be in trouble for not looking into their new poster girl too deeply and getting caught up in the hype of clicky pens

KettlePolly · 09/09/2021 22:31

It's a pile on and not a fair one. I don't agree with everything she says. But this is turning into a witch-hunt and unfair given the vitriol she gets and has got even for saying something comparatively banal. I'd have most likely snapped and said worse far more frequently under pressure. Like I say our politics don't align but it doesn't merit this sort of attack.

She wasn't under pressure. She was tweeting this stuff out when watching X Factor on a Saturday night.
RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 09/09/2021 22:34

She's a fan of cancel culture but now seems to be on the receiving end

I don’t know her, I don’t know her work, I’m not in to cancel culture, i do find what she’s said unpleasant and her apology is absolutely pathetic

But…if she is a fan of cancel culture? I do not have any sympathy whatsoever

QueenPeary · 09/09/2021 22:34

The edinburgh castle question happens because from many angles it doesn’t look like a castle, while some other buildings in the city centre do, so it is actually genuinely confusing.
