Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

Kimoko that makes no sense

Why would she report it as a hate crime when that was not what her issue was?

She was concerned about the govt using her as a face of a campaign given some of the things she had come out with. So she told the govt her concerns.

Nothing to do with the police.

@tedimgoingmad I tweeted a screenshot of 2 tweets supposed to be made by Godley which were clearly and directly racist and antisemitic. I’ve since been informed that they’re fakes, so deleted my tweet.
I’m not sure if that’s what you’re referring to?

The fake pic is this:

@QueenPeary

It depends on who they wanted to target the message to?

Yes, but the ideal person would be someone who's generally liked in Scotland and there are a good choice of therm - whereas Godley, even if you love her (/think she's your alter ego), is clearly divisive.

Not really. They'd be looking for someone to appeal to the target audience. If for example they needed to inform older people 65+ they'd choose someone who that group would pay attention to. That would be a different person to who they'd choose for a student campaign.

That's why I'd love to see the strategy...

Agree. For instance I think JKR is fabulous, but leaving aside recent issues, I would assume that her strong stance on Brexit and Scottish independence - issues that have split the U.K./Scotland 50/50 would compromise her ability to deliver a public health message for the government. You need somebody who is apolitical.

NS seems to have confused campaigning with governing.

@MrsCornelius thank you. I didn't know what was being referred to by David Baddiel as a fake tweet, but that looks like it could be the one.

I just found it curious that a person who has written a book about racism towards a certain group being increasingly prevalent and going unchecked would defend JG, who has undoubtedly tweeted racist and disabilist "jokes", on the basis of, presumably, comedy being untouchable. Because surely he would not have leapt to the defence of anyone saying that stuff as mere commentary?

A very on topic discussion here, with the Triggernometry fellows being interviewed by comedian, Karen Dunbar, for the BBC.

nauticant · 11/09/2021 20:15

I watched that video the other day and I was mesmerised by the real-time chats.

They were largely angry, unpleasant, and paranoid with Dunbar's questions, in the form of mild, challenges, being perceived as unfair and aggressively attacks. Everything she said or didn't say was perceived as her being brainwashed in woke ideology. Her attempt at a neutral stance, not always successful, she often appeared to be agreeing with the interviewees, was seen as evidence of her stupidity, her inability to see the true path, and that she was easily swayed. Lots of derogatory comments about her appearance.

The widespread inability to understand the role of an interviewer and the need for them to prompt the interviewees to open up, to not push a particular line, and to be very much in the background, was just amazing.

This particular group of free speech supporters, mainly leaning to the right, are in a number of ways a mirror image of the progressive woke. To think that many of them would sneeringly use the word snowflake about their opponents while looking in a mirror is very amusing.

nauticant · 11/09/2021 20:17

To be fair though I think that since the interview Konstantin Kisin has commented on the unfairness of some of the comments in the chat.

KimikosNightmare · 12/09/2021 02:21

I wonder if Karen Dunbar would have been a better choice for the campaign? She's a lot funnier than Godley.

I was disappointed however at finding out about the "Dykey D Rapper" sketch Dunbar did at a separatist rally supposedly to lampoon Ruth Davidson.

Dunbar shrugged off any criticism on the basis she is also a lesbian so how could it possibly be offensive? Cherry thought it “hilariously irreverent satire"
Sturgeon eventually got round to condemning the performance.

It does seem pathetic that a comedian intending to satirise and lampoon a politician should do so by reference to the politician's sexual orientation.

A good article in the TImes from Euan McColm. I thought it was fair and pretty insightful on the arts/SNP situation in Scotland:

I don't agree at all that Alf Garnett was a sympathetic character to the working class (as though we're one homogenous lump!). He was quite definitely a figure of fun. His whole family were laughing at him quite openly and treated his rants with amused contempt.

We'd laugh at the real life Alf Garnetts, too, and challenge them in just the same way. Where do you think the writer got his ideas from?

Violetparis · 12/09/2021 22:25

TedImfoingmad I also thought it was very odd for David Baddeil to stick up for JG.
