Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

rabbitwoman · 09/09/2021 20:55

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

So when will she be approached by Police Scotland and charged under the Malicious Communications act or whatever it was that they charged Marion Miller with?

Isn't this the very hate that the Scottish Government put signs up all over cities about?

KimikosNightmare · 10/09/2021 00:11

I'm enjoying it. I haven't a shred of sympathy for her.

KimikosNightmare · 10/09/2021 00:14

@QueenPeary

I follow several trans allies for various reasons and she is one. She sometimes makes me laugh and I find her interesting. I actually really admired her apology. You don't often see a heartfelt, unreserved apology and acceptance of criticism as she has. She's also far from the only person to do what she did and many others men don't get any comeback for it.

I don't really like any kind of Twitter pile-on, whoever it is. Not even Owen Jones! It's mob justice and regressive.

Oh come off it. This odious woman is sorry she was found out- nothing more than that.

Some of the tweets are as recent as 2017- when she was 57. These aren't the tweets of a silly teenager.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 10/09/2021 00:20

I'm surprised there isn't anything cited from this year, tbh.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 10/09/2021 00:26

She's vile.

TedImgoingmad · 10/09/2021 00:45

Which tweets are the ones she claims are fake? Are the X-factor ones referred to above real? If they are, my mind boggles that Dawn French, mother of a black child, would support Godley.

Mantlemoose · 10/09/2021 00:48

Made me embarrassed to be Scottish ever since she started appearing in my news feeds. Cringeworthy to say the least. Just like arriving at the airport and being welcomed with 'pure deid brilliant'. I should also say DM was born and lived in Glasgow till early adulthood and most definitely doesn't speak like that!

Realyorkshiretea · 10/09/2021 00:52

The ‘heartfelt apology’ was only because she knew any attempts at deflection would make it worse for her.

No sympathy I’m afraid. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

TedImgoingmad · 10/09/2021 00:59

I see she has David Baddiel's support. DB published a book earlier this year about anti-semitism being treated too lightly by the public and the media. But she has been saying anti-semitic stuff too (allegedly), so what, it's ok with DB as long as it's in joke form?

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2021 01:02

I doubt it I read the book.

Maybe he doesn't know that.

I mean who knows he's his own person iyswim.

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2021 01:04

Got a link to dB tweet?

LobsterNapkin · 10/09/2021 01:16

It's a very odd choice for the face of a government campaig.

I generally give quite a bit of scope for comedians to be completely non-PC and even offensive, as I think that's important for humour to be socially useful. I don't consider it necessarily represents anything to do with their private thoughts (unless it's actually a private setting, which tweets aren't.) If I find it a turn off or unfunny, I don't listen to it. Not being listened to for being unfunny is much more effective than canceling.

But I also can't help but think that if you live by cancel culture you will die by it and I won't shed tears. (Though I would give some credit to someone who then realized the problem and said so publicly.)

MyBadHabitsLeadToYou · 10/09/2021 01:27

Meh.

Sometimes bad things happen to bad people 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gimlisaxe · 10/09/2021 01:36

@TedImgoingmad

When I read it originally I thought she meant some of her tweets were faked, but I think what she actually means is she tweeted racist and vile shit against fake accounts who were insulting her.

Greencoatblue · 10/09/2021 01:40

To my shame I couldn't care less how uncomfortable or harassed JG feels. Live by the sword, die by the sword. A taste of your own medicine should bring it home clearly. It's to be hoped she learns some home truths and appreciates how vile and hurtful so many of her tweets have been.

NiceGerbil · 10/09/2021 01:43

In general I agree that people including comedians can say what they like.

What's depressing is with eg FB and this woman, enough people like it to give them a career and income.

And in this case be given massive stamp of approval by govt.

Abhannmor · 10/09/2021 01:48

Must be awful when you are leading the torch bearing mob.....then you look around and nobody's there. I hate the pile-ons too and perhaps this will be a moment of catharsis. But then I thought that when Graham Linehan made his statement to the Commons. Or when JKR published her essay ....but..

Coyoacan · 10/09/2021 02:08

How can anyone who is not black or Jewish forgive an adult who made comments like those? Some of the worst racist trash I've ever read and the Scottish government think that is OK and hire her?

rabbitwoman · 10/09/2021 06:22

The thing about cancel culture is that, if you are a member of the mob, it is excellent fun. And part of the fun is knowing that there is a huge gang behind you, egging you on to say the worst things you can..... You can really let out you inner most vile behaviour, and it feels really good....

.... if you are that kind of person. One look at janey Godley's tweets and you can tell, she is that kind of person. No one wants to be on the receiving end of it so they join in instead.

What would I like to happen? How about instead of saying 'I can't just say what I want because I consider it comedy....' why not say 'I was gleefully indulging in classic bullying behaviour. It gave me a thrill. I am damaged myself through abuse, no excuse but it hardened me to the impact of my words without really thinking how it would feel if I was on the receiving end. Now I know, its horrible, and it's bad for free speech and democracy. '

I dunno. Something like that.

I don’t know what the was said in the Tweet that was deleted though.

Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....
rabbitwoman · 10/09/2021 06:33

That first tweet is her apology video. The second must be someone signposting him towards the really nasty vile anti semetic tweet which she a claiming is a fake.

And to be honest? It was so blatantly racist, so nasty and completely at odds with the current culture I am inclined to believe her. I cannot believe she would be soooo stupid as to tweet something like that - I would love to know how it is faked, tho....

You can't see those tweets because she has locked her account now.

merrymouse · 10/09/2021 06:41

Were these tweets deleted?

If not there seems to be a disconnect between the SNP’s stance on hate crimes and their apparent naivety about twitter. Was the assumption that she had only ever been rude to the right people?

EmbarrassingAdmissions · 10/09/2021 06:51

@MiladyBerserko

So when will she be approached by Police Scotland and charged under the Malicious Communications act or whatever it was that they charged Marion Miller with?

Isn't this the very hate that the Scottish Government put signs up all over cities about?

I was wondering about the implications for Marion Millar.

For consistency, will Godley have to be charged or will some person (although not necessarily an individual who received them) if I understand this correctly, need to complain?

However, weren't those charges dropped in the case of Millar?

Any way up, it's difficult to see how she can retain the work that Scots Gov. awarded her. And I'd be surprised if the theatre that's hired her for panto can follow through. It would be inconsistent with other such actions against others.

It's a mess.

EsmaCannonball · 10/09/2021 06:53

I don't agree with cancel culture but it seems she does. Surely she would be a hypocrite not to support her own cancellation. I'd only heard of her because she's been mentioned once or twice by Graham Linehan. Looking at some of her tweets that people are collating on Twitter, not only is she just not funny (more like one of those abusive drunks, mouthing off on the bus) but she's also said far nastier things than any GC person who's been kicked off that platform. Will she be arrested? Will she and her friends be thrown out of pubs?

Frankie Boyle has got away with this stuff because he's a prime example of what I call Men Surviving the Cull. These are traditionally successful men who've realised that more space for other types of people equals less space for them. They survive the cull by adopting one or both of two strategies; first, identifying as trans or non-binary or queer or anything that gives you identity privilege but can't be proven in any objective way; second, by becoming one of the most prolific or vicious denouncers of anyone who fails to support identity privilege, and thereby become too valuable to the cause to be sidelined. It's absolutely craven.

rabbitwoman · 10/09/2021 07:16

Yes, it is a bit suspicious, isn't it, that despite every other demographic being fair game, they are so protective of trans folk.
