Not enjoying the Janey Godley pile on....

Haven't seen a thread on this, although there is a bit on the end of the NS thread at the moment.

But Godley was very outspoken against anyone questioning the trans rights agenda, and is someone who gleefully and happily reports, blocks and let's lose a barrage of very foul mouthed abuse to anyone who disagrees with her on twitter.

However, I am not enjoying her twitter take down this evening. I would much prefer a complete turn around and all the oldest voices to use this as an opportunity to call for a more reasonable debate.

Can’t stand her. She has a cheek to slag off other people accents and dialects when she hams up her wee schemie Glesca wummin act.

PronounssheRa · 09/09/2021 22:44

I'd have most likely snapped and said worse far more frequently under pressure

Really? She appears to have tweeted numerous racist and ableist slurs. I'm astonished anyone would try to defend this.

Heatherington · 09/09/2021 22:47

I too am baffled if these tweets were so recent and not hidden, why haven’t they been raised before, or when they first appeared?

I think because they pre-date anything like her being famous. She was just another horrible person on Twitter in 2011.

And she’s never been famous enough for someone to go looking til now.

louisemichelle · 09/09/2021 22:47

Really?! Her humour to me was animal
Voiceovers for kids during lockdown… also foul mouthed? Are we back to the 50s where only men are allowed to swear? Is this some random anti snp thread? Also love grown women saying they never made mistakes as grown women - well done you… but most of us make mistakes- sometimes bigger mistakes as adults.

What I don't get is that everyone knew JG was like this

I didn't. I'd only heard of her in connection with the Nicola Sturgeon voiceovers.

I don't know the context in which she made these remarks but I would be hardpressed to come up with a context in which they'd be acceptable.

She said that about Sir Cliff? Shock

Never mind a general apology, I would hope that Godley has approached some of those individuals to apologise to them in private and with full sincerity.

Have you read her tweets?
louisemichelle · 09/09/2021 22:49

Yep

Velveteena · 09/09/2021 22:49

Being racist isn't a mistake, it's a choice.

louisemichelle · 09/09/2021 22:50

The recent fake ones or the old old ones… just to clarify?

IsabelGowdie · 09/09/2021 22:51

You live by the sword…

I have no sympathy for her. The minute I read her disabled slurs I put her down as fair game for the bastards of the internet that she has encouraged to go after other people, notably GC women.

And this was before I saw the racist shite.

I really hope Dawn French and David Baddiel et al do not condone calling people those vile things. I am not even going to repeat them blanked out.

I know that mother libs supporting her are happy to support her when she goes after women expressing concern about women’s rights.
I expect no more from them. They have the advantage of luxury beliefs (I can’t imagine their daughters will be in any danger of being locked in a prison cell with a rapist, so it obviously is something they can be cool with. Remember no exceptions!)

But I thought they might draw the line at the hatred that she has spewed.

louisemichelle · 09/09/2021 22:53

What the duck are mother libs?

ArabellaScott · 09/09/2021 22:54

Pile ons are awful, OP, I agree.

She should not be employed by the government, that's really inappropriate.

FloralBunting · 09/09/2021 22:56

She'll be fine. She's already had soothing noises from some prominent Genderists. As long as she bangs out the hand wringing apology (check) and reiterates her commitment to the cause, keeps her head down for a bit, she'll be back on Twitter in a couple of months ripping holes in women's rights for all she's worth.

She's getting rightly criticised for saying awful things. When she's spearheaded pile ons directed towards women like Sister Outrider for campaigning for women, it's not even slightly comparable. Sorry, but bullying people because you disagree with them is not on - being criticized for using despicable racist and ableist slurs is absolutely how social pressure is supposed to work, especially if someone is claiming to stand for some sort of progressive utopia.

But like I say, I really wouldn't feel too bad for her if I were you. No one gets fully cancelled so long as they submit to the Genderist party line. Godley's a true believer. It's only women like us who resist that get properly shat on.

NiceGerbil · 09/09/2021 22:57

Twitter isn't real life though.

I don't know what % of people in UK/ Scotland are on there.

The weight given to it feels disproportionate.

I think it's an interesting phenomenon - watching the very people who often start or join in public shaming & monstering of people who are deemed unworthy, fall foul of their own 'moral code'. I dislike the pile ons, I think social media shaming & harassment (which Godley has gladly engaged in) is a scourge & it shouldn't be as all encompassing & influential as it is.

That said, Godley has been hoisted by her own petard here. One example - She encouraged & contributed to the efforts to discredit SNP political opponents when she retweeted Alex Arthur's dodgy tweets while smearing that party. His tweets were bad, yet pale in comparison to Godley's. She was quite happy to contribute to that (while enjoying the support of the SNP as it suited them to have another candidate opponent/party discredited).

I agree it's unpleasant to watch but given the nature, volume & seriousness of what she's posted, she's fortunate to have Sturgeon in her corner as otherwise she could be facing what Marion Millar is dealing with. MM of course is someone else Godley has contributed to smearing for the 'kudos' that piling on women defending their rights gets 'trans allies'.

She's not a child, she's a grown woman who claimed moral superiority over plenty of others & she knew her language was offensive but felt no compunction to change even when pointing her judgement at others for the 'likes'. I have very little sympathy for her, while having the opinion that all social media shaming is just wrong.

She'll bounce back though as she's already got the SNP equalities convener ready to administer 'rehabilitation' as she's not like those bigoted women who booed Sturgeon - they're beyond redemption.

louisemichelle · 09/09/2021 22:58

What’s the genderist party line? Do tell.

FuckPilledLatteplus · 09/09/2021 22:59

Government sure loves associating with freaks

FloralBunting · 09/09/2021 23:00

'TWAW' dear. I'm sure you're well aware of that load of old pony.

This says it better than I did. 👌
Fitt · 09/09/2021 23:01

Well that's embarrassing if Nicola Sturgeon claims her as her alter ego. Would Nicola like to be tweeting those things if she could? How interesting.

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 09/09/2021 23:02

louise?

What does her humour is animal mean?

Is it literally animal or an autocorrect?

OperationDessertStorm · 09/09/2021 23:04

I got the impression that she was insulting and ‘phobic and nasty about everyone (I mean we could probably cherry pick South Park quotes in a way that would look utterly damning when put together). But what she has said is indefensible and pretty shocking. It’s the sort of Jim Davidson stuff that still attracts a small group.

I presume she’s gotten away with it for so long is the same as Frankie - the t ally defence has bought her some time. It gives me hope that Frankie could be next.

I don’t like pile ons (and I bet everyone doing it will have something in their tweets that could be swung back on them) but if she wants to object to women tweeting about single sex spaces then I don’t think she has a toenail to stand on.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 09/09/2021 23:13

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

Her problem is she has blocked most of the internet. So she believes her own hype.

The problem is not what she said, that's not a secret, she's not hidden it. The problem is that someone at the scottish government didn't do due diligence before making her the face of the new covid campaign.

This is what happens when you don't listen to people. Holyrood is an echo chamber and someone has really fucked up.

Janey has piled on many, many people. I'm not that sympathetic, though I do think she's been dumped from a shitty height for someone else's mistake.

Am looking forward to the Daly Record, LOJ, Gaiman, Amanda Palmer, the Scottish Trans Alliance, Patrick Harvie, and Nicola Sturgeon all standing up for her.

Nothing so far, I see.

This.

Godley has a very loyal following on twitter who defend her whatever she does and she is very heavy on the block button if anyone disagrees with her. Not particularly unusual, but she is also somewhat notorious on UK twitter for orchestrating pile-ons of her loyal followers on to ordinary twitter users, particularly GC feminists.

However, Holyrood obviously know none of this. If I'd had to pick someone for the health campaign, I would have carefully reviewed her twitter timeline to head this off, or not employed Godley at all. Not because she disagrees with me (my personal disagreements stay at home!) but because of the way she expresses her opinions.

A health campaign really needs to have cross-section appeal, not just be a hit with one demographic.
