For apparently sharing something anti-Semitic.

Oh dear how sad.

It was an article that interviewed Maxine Peake.

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/keir-starmer-rebecca-long-bailey-step-down-maxine-peake-antisemitism-a9585601.html

On the one hand, good. But on the other, all she did was share an article. I don't endorse all the views that crop up in articles that I share; in some cases I actively oppose them

All feels a bit knee-jerky to me.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 25/06/2020 15:29

Hasn’t today turned out absolutely wonderful.

IntermittentParps · 25/06/2020 15:30

Good for Keir, I say. The only way Labour can sort out their image as anti-Semitic is to practise zero tolerance.
Long-Bailey was foolish at best to retweet the piece. And Maxine Peake is a bit of a gobshite IMO. And I say that as a sometime Labour voter.

SunsetBeetch · 25/06/2020 15:32

Yeah Xantha I'm kind of torn on this one. But perhaps all this purity spirally will put a faster end to woke cancel culture?

I know my dislike of RLB is prejudicing me somewhat.

Kit19 · 25/06/2020 15:36

Guardian is saying that this is a last straw thing with Long Bailey repeatedly failing to condemn anti Semitism. Tbh it’s a gift for Starmer. While Johnson failed to sack Cummins & now Jenrick despite them being in clear breach of the rules, Starmer looks decisive & honest in comparison

Plus she’s a dick so no great loss

Xanthangum · 25/06/2020 15:38

Maybe there's more to this than we are being told.

She could easily have apologised and withdrawn her tweet and comments.

Clearly Kier wants to be unequivocal in his anti-semitic position, and that's great. But she had other options that he must have offered her; losing a shadow cabinet colleague doesn't look good.

I'll look forward to finding out more.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 25/06/2020 15:38

Quote from the article: -

“Rebecca Long-Bailey’s response is frankly pathetic,” she said. “As someone who aspires to be the next education secretary, we expect her to read and understand materials before sharing them. If she is incapable of doing this, it raises serious and immediate questions about her suitability for the role.”

I think that's fair.

Xanthangum · 25/06/2020 15:40

Also. Job vacancy?

Collidascope · 25/06/2020 15:43

Live by the sword, die by the sword, I guess. RLB was happy enough to sign a pledge for women who don't believe twaw to be chucked out.

TedsFederationRep · 25/06/2020 15:43

I say good for Keir Starmer too and I speak as a Conservative (one who would like to see an effective Opposition in place to hold the government to account. After all, who in their right mind would want to live in a one party state?)

He said he would rip the poison of anti-semitism out by its roots and this is a good way of showing he is serious about it. All credit to him for starting as he means to go on. Now if he could just be clearer about the definition of 'woman'...

onalongsabbatical · 25/06/2020 15:44

Maxine Peake is anti-Semitic?
I can't keep up. I'm sad about that, I like her.
RLB not so much.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/06/2020 15:51

I have zero sympathy for her. How quick was she to decide women should be thrown out of the Labour party for wanting their sex based rights acknowledged. The woke crew will come for them all one by one.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/06/2020 15:52

The only thing that bothers me is that it's yet another woman being 'cancelled', why do the men seem to get away with everything?

Michelleoftheresistance · 25/06/2020 15:53

Live by the witch hunting, fall by the witch hunting.

^ This. She's also not very bright. I like my MPs to be demonstrably more intelligent than me (and that's not a very high bar).
GCAcademic · 25/06/2020 15:55

I doubt he wanted to appoint her in the first place, he was pushed into agreeing to appoint his rivals during the leadership contest.

CaraDune · 25/06/2020 15:57

losing a shadow cabinet colleague doesn't look good.

On the contrary - if I was Starmer I would be rejoicing that Wrong Bailey (Corbyn's protegee remember) had effectively given him a cast iron reason to get rid of her. He can now say "look, I reached out to Momentum, I tried to build bridges, I even gave her a job in the cabinet - but unfortunately she then turned out to have an antisemitic streak a mile wide and I had to get rid of her."

Coffeecak3 · 25/06/2020 16:00

Gosh, for a political animal she is rather naive if she’s not anti Semitic. And if she is then she should go.

SunshineCake · 25/06/2020 16:00

Great news.

OliveKitteridgeAgain · 25/06/2020 16:01

RLB doesn't think adult human females have any sex based concerns worth defending, like workplace discrimination. She presumably would disagree that her cancellation has anything to do with her status as an adult human female, because she doesn't believe such a thing exists. it's all about the gender feelz. I read on here all the time, if you can't define what a woman is, then you can't define how she is being systematically discriminated against.

Yep. If I were him, I'd be enjoying a nice celebratory drink.

He needs to weed these people out slowly and incrementally, if he's to widen and re-engage the base without alienating the brats.

Xenia · 25/06/2020 16:08

I am hoping for 10 years of Tory rule so this is no great loss but we really have gone too far in sacking people for just forwarding things on or exercising freedom of speech. It is now like those McCarthy anti communist days in the USA. We somehow need to move back to a time of freedom including no CV19 restrictions and back to more freedom of speech and respect for the views of others.

Helmetbymidnight · 25/06/2020 16:09

I don't think Rting something else is a clear cut example of anti-semitism. However, I'm glad she's been sacked because I think she's a dim-wit.

The men in my local Labour party are going to be gutted. Ha.

TDogsInHats · 25/06/2020 16:09

It's rather ironic that Maxine Peak is speaking out against racism and in the very same breath allegedly puts the blame on Israel for teaching US police officers the abhorrent tactic of kneeling on someone's neck.
