For apparently sharing something anti-Semitic.

Oh dear how sad.

Maybe RLB had somehow missed reading the anti-Israel sentence. But I’m really struggling to understand why she thought that article was worth sharing. It makes Maxine Peake come across as fanatical and embarrassingly self important.

Cwenthryth · 25/06/2020 16:11

OK. I admit I’m struggling here.

At the risk of also being branded as anti-Semitic - this is the article she shared - in the Independent!
www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/maxine-peake-interview-labour-corbyn-keir-starmer-black-lives-matter-a9583206.html

In which Maxine Peake claims that the ‘restraint’ technique used to kill George Floyd was taught in a seminar by Israeli secret service. A sidebar then disputes this.

Has the article been edited since RLB tweeted it?

Viviennemary · 25/06/2020 16:14

Good. Can't stand her.

derxa · 25/06/2020 16:15

Good for Keir. I bet he couldn't believe his luck.

OliveKitteridgeAgain · 25/06/2020 16:16

@Xenia

I am hoping for 10 years of Tory rule so this is no great loss but we really have gone too far in sacking people for just forwarding things on or exercising freedom of speech. It is now like those McCarthy anti communist days in the USA. We somehow need to move back to a time of freedom including no CV19 restrictions and back to more freedom of speech and respect for the views of others.
Not sure how this bit of Labour in fighting has anything to do with the Tories being in power? I have no love for the Tories, but this shit show, borne out of cancellation culture, is all of the so-called progressive left's/Corbyn's/Momentum's making.
OliveKitteridgeAgain · 25/06/2020 16:16

Actually Xenia, ignore that, I think I misread your post.

MinnieMousse · 25/06/2020 16:17

I imagine they were looking for an excuse to be rid of her. I think KS was trying to show unity by appointing her and Lisa Nandy to the shadow cabinet initially but I'm sure there won't be many tears shed that she's gone.

I also imagine the Labour Party feels it has to be completely on top of even a whiff of anti-semitism given its recent history.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 25/06/2020 16:18

Hasn’t today turned out absolutely wonderful.

The icing on the cake would be for Lisa Nandy to resign in solidarity!

Wrong Daily didn't just share the article. Obviously people will share material they don't endorse if they are looking for reactions to it. But that isn't what Wrong Daily did.

She added a comment to Maxine Peak - 'you diamond'.

That was what did for her and rightly so.

BaronessSnippyPantsofCroneArmy · 25/06/2020 16:20

Now if Sir Keir was to employ a shadow education secretary who had the guts to wave today's Transgender Trend report under the nose of Gavin Williamson and ask him what he was going to do about it, THAT would make it a double celebration.

But I won't expect miracles.

GiantKitten · 25/06/2020 16:20

“The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services”
While US law enforcement officials have received training from the Israeli military, there has been no suggestion that this training involved the tactics of kneeling on an individual's neck.

The neck thing may not be true (though we don't know that, do we?) but leaving that aside, "anti-semitic" here, as so often, actually means "anti-Israel" Hmm

sergeilavrov · 25/06/2020 16:20

Sacking her isn’t enough. Starmer is a soft touch on dealing with anti semitism to keep a broken party together. I’m so sick of these people being allowed to remain as MPs and members. He needs to suspend her from the party pending investigation, deselect her, and then ban for life. Many in the Jewish community will only come back to Labour when action against anti semitism is more than lip service. Glad she’s gone though.

Hoppinggreen · 25/06/2020 16:25

Start of a Momentum purge?

donquixotedelamancha · 25/06/2020 16:26

On the one hand, good. But on the other, all she did was share an article.

That was my initial reaction but it seems it was her reply when the board of deputies contacted her which caused the issue:

donquixotedelamancha · 25/06/2020 16:26

Marie van der Zyl, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, praised the Labour leader for taking "swift action" over the row.

She said: "I would like to thank Keir Starmer for backing his words with actions on antisemitism. After Rebecca Long-Bailey shared a conspiracy theory, we and others gave her the opportunity to retract and apologise.

SuckingDieselFella · 25/06/2020 16:27

And so often 'Israel' is attacked when the real target is Jews.
derxa · 25/06/2020 16:30

You'd think she'd have better things to do than 'like' some newspaper article about an actress. How about looking at how children are returning to school in September in England.

sergeilavrov · 25/06/2020 16:30

@Cwenthryth That was added afterward. They didn’t question the claim, and it was claimed Amnesty International had said it. This was not true.

AiryFairyMum · 25/06/2020 16:31

Seems unreasonable and knee-jerk. Looks like they've been trying to discredit her all along. I also love Maxine Peake!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/06/2020 16:32

The only thing that bothers me is that it's yet another woman being 'cancelled', why do the men seem to get away with everything?

I completely agree with this, but can't bring myself to feel any sympathy for her. Does she flat share with Angela Rayner, or am I imagining that?

PrincessConsuelaVaginaHammock · 25/06/2020 16:33

Pretty much. And if RLB had any sense, she'd have been very aware of all this.
Teenangels · 25/06/2020 16:37

@Coffeecak3

Gosh, for a political animal she is rather naive if she’s not anti Semitic. And if she is then she should go.
I am actually pleased just need Angela Rayner out and the party will become electable again.
Sexnotgender · 25/06/2020 16:37

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn

I agree to a point.

We absolutely need more women in power and I’d never usually rejoice in something like this.

But we only need more women in power if they represent the interests and needs of women. RLB cheerfully threw women under the bus and that’s unforgivable.

Frozenfrogs86 · 25/06/2020 16:37

@GiantKitten Totally agree. I’m from a secular Jewish background and if Israel want to stop being criticised they should stop committing crimes against civilians and being racist. I obviously don’t hate Jewish people.

SuckingDieselFella · 25/06/2020 16:38

There are few clues in the article as to what Maxine Peak's real problem is. And why Wrong Daily got the sack for supporting her.

"She’s supposed to be in Palestine still, liaising with young activists, but she had to fly home when the world started shutting down."

"“Systemic racism is a global issue,” she adds. “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.” "

"Peake campaigned for the Labour Party at the last general election, and was a vocal supporter of Jeremy Corbyn"

"People going, ‘Oh, I can join the Labour Party again because Keir Starmer’s there,’ well shame on you.”"

If you're one of Starmer's shadow cabinet and you tell someone she's a 'diamond' for saying this, it's reason enough to get booted out. Let alone the link between Israel and 'systemic racism'.
