For apparently sharing something anti-Semitic.

Oh dear how sad.

Russia annexed Crimea, China occupies Tibet and claims Taiwan Turkey and Northern Cyprus this does not result in them not having a seat at UN however Israel doesn't. being a Palestinian in Israel maybe being a second class citizen and some Arabs and Palestians do have Israeli citizenship but being. Rohingha Muslim in Myanmar is not fun or Cheyna in Russia or being in Yemen Sudan etc the anti semitism is in holding the Israeli government to a higher standard than the Chinese, Turkish Saudi Arabian governments on treatment of minorities
You can relief sculptures in the British museum of ancient Assyrian soldiers kneeling on necks of vanguished the technique is 3000 years old at least so blaming it on the state of Israel which has only existed 70 years is bizarre to say the least and anti Semitic if you use two brain cells, no one with a brain could seriously believe this is a unique Jewish thing specifically taught to USA police to harm black people

LuluJakey1 · 25/06/2020 17:46

Keir Starmer has been very careful not to call her anti-semitic and to say his priority is to build bridges with the Jewish community and RLB re-tweeting that article has damaged that.

She has no excuse. She should have read it and seen that the comment about the Israeli police was, at best, likely to be inflammatory if she re-tweeted it and at worst would open a can of worms.

It is not simply a criticism, which may be warranted, of the Israeli police methods and a suggestion they may have trained American police. The George Floyd murder is high profile and the comment seeks to link Israel to violence, racism and corruption and highlights their supposed influence in America. It is anti-semitic.

DidoLamenting · 25/06/2020 17:48

I don't think we should celebrate a woman losing her job - even if she is a complete twat

What nonsense.

Frozenveggista · 25/06/2020 17:49

I am happy that she had been sacked. I could not possibly argue against the sacking of a person who happily argued against the freedom of my sex. Goodbye Beckie, shut the door on your way out. Right, who’s next??

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 25/06/2020 17:50

Am I the only person fascinated by the fact that she didn’t just apologise? Why not? Is she glad to be out of there/does she have somewhere to go?

Or she’s content to be know for being sacked for being anti Semitic- which seems an unlikely choice even for someone who actually is anti Semitic...

Who is doing that?

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/06/2020 17:50

Thanks caradune.

stumbledin · 25/06/2020 17:53

So much Marxist nonsense that it's difficult to know where to start.

It's standard British history. the only people who deny this are people like Farage and Tommy Robinson.

You labeling it Marxist, presumably meant to be an insult, just shows you dont have any arguement against it!

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/06/2020 17:53

A pal of mine is a solicitor. He's a lovely, lovely guy, but boy is he dimmer than a lorry load of short planks!

Same here, a woman, childhood friend. She dyed her hair blonde as she said men in law firms treated her very differently. though sometimes I wonder if that's genius ... though no, other recent stuff she's done proves the first theory.

transdimensional · 25/06/2020 17:54

If it had been true that the Israeli security forces taught this technique, that would in no way imply that it was uniquely Jewish nor that it was specifically taught in reference to black people.
The original version of the Independent article (which RLB would have read) appeared to defend/justify Peake's remark.
The Israeli security forces have been guilty of human rights abuses, and have been training US police forces - even if it was incorrect to ascribe to them training in this particular technique. I do not see how their reputation has been damaged, since they already have a reputation for brutality.
I don't think Maxine Peake had any anti-semitic intent.
I definitely don't think RLB had any anti-semitic intent in retweeting an interview in which this was one small part.
But certainly, by getting rid of her, KS shows the stamp of firm leadership (a sharp contrast from the Tories) and also shows that he is serious about clamping down on anything resembling the slightest whiff of a suggestion of anti-semitism.
Tory racism and Tory anti-semitism will never get the same media attention ( www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-book-jews-control-media-general-election-a9239346.html , www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/tories-lift-suspension-of-councillor-who-wrote-that-part-of-holocaust-had-been-fabricated-1.500484 ), but there's not a lot Keir can do about that.

leli · 25/06/2020 17:54

@lydia7986 Thank you (and others) so much for being so articulate and setting out the indisputable anti-semitic origins of dragging Israel into USA racist policing.

Thank you Keir for decisive action. Goodbye RLB. Good riddance.

Remember that the Labour Party (pre Keir) is being investigated by the Equality & Human Rights Commission. I hope they produce their report soon.

yogz1976 · 25/06/2020 17:54

Who are the real anti-semites? Why the IDF of course! And look, at 1:36, you can see a nice IDF tough guy KNEELING ON A PEACEFUL JEWISH PROTESTER'S NECK!!!

This is footage of a protest by orthodox jews against national conscription.

My0My · 25/06/2020 17:54

RLB said she worked as a solicitor for 10 years. She didn’t. It was 6 1/2 years. She didn’t have any high flying legal job. She drew up PFI property contracts for the NHS. She originally said she worked for the NHS. She didn’t. Basically she’s winged it. She gave KS a bit of a reason for her to go and he took it. Stupid her. But not surprising.

ChloeCrocodile · 25/06/2020 17:56

@whereorwhere

I think she's a nob (as is Maxine peak to be honest) but I hate this new culture where one mistake makes someone lose their job. It is entirely possible she was going with the main substance of the article as opposed to that one element. I don't think we should celebrate a woman losing her job - even if she is a complete twat
I agree with this. But, when you make a mistake you apologise. And sharing this article was a mistake. The article undermines and alienates former labour voters who switched to voting conservative because the couldn’t stomach Corbyn. That suggests she doesn’t understand / care about what the Labour Party needs to do in order to win back those voters. Which makes her a liability in future elections. The Labour Party has dealt with anti semitism poorly in the very recent past and those on the front bench should be making a concerted effort to build bridges rather than supporting public figures who link George Floyd’s death to Israel. Johnson looks spectacularly out of touch at the moment, barely over the Cummings scandal before a new one erupted over Jenrick and Starmer wants to look capable of taking decisive action.

The combination of the three, plus her refusing to delete the tweets, make Starmer’s decision for him.

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/06/2020 17:58

No, and I think that is key.

It's clear, as upthread, there are certain political lines being drawn.

It's also clear that the history and historical interpretations around all this are extremely complex.

I have no doubt that the British have had a part in this somewhere too.

Lordamighty · 25/06/2020 17:58

Well said TeacupDrama you have put more succinctly than I ever could.

stumbledin · 25/06/2020 18:01

Okay!!!

Have just heard on radio 4 a Labour MP explain how this is a conspiracy theory.

It is a conspiracy because by saying the US police were taught to do this by Israeli police, you are saying it is not the US police who are racist (????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*) but the Israeli training.

Somebody Coil.

I suppose it is just possible that some right wing American fundamentalists might want to say this, but as many of them are very pro Israel, I find it hard to believe.

Who at this point in history would try and explain the actions of white US police towards African American as being anything other than their own racism?!

I hope someone comes up with a better explanation than that. The Labour Party looks like it is just hanging itself out to whichever wind is blowing.

(Worth remembering that another part of British history is the role that many happily acknowledge, of the SAS in perfecting a number of techniques which they have shared with any number of other countries police forces and army units. Buy British, Buy Best!)

10 years if you include her time as a trainee solicitor, 6 1/2 if you only count her time as a fully qualified solicitor at the time she made the statement (7 1/2 by the time of the subsequent general election).
NeurotrashWarrior · 25/06/2020 18:02

I don't like the new quote system.

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons
Am I the only person fascinated by the fact that she didn’t just apologise? Why not? Is she glad to be out of there/does she have somewhere to go?

That's telling imo.

Saucery · 25/06/2020 18:02

Her Twitter is a joy to read. She’s letting her anti-Semitic mates have free rein on there.

NeurotrashWarrior · 25/06/2020 18:05

It's rather ironic that Peake is criticising structural racism in America, and blaming Israel, when, ya know, it's the continent the British colonised, killed and wiped out most of the indigenous people, then shipped a ton of slaves over to do all the dirty work for them.

C8H10N4O2 · 25/06/2020 18:05

Israeli police may or may not teach kneeling on people's knecks. And decent media out let would fact check

I agree there should be more checks on some of these claims. I also think anyone who aspired to be our prime minister should be doing the same before promoting the latest variant on an old anti semitic trope.

I would also expect them to read the article properly before retweeting. I'm hoping she was being an idiot rather than endorsing Peake's views that former Labour voters could FOAD.

I'd also expect her to grab the opportunity to say "shit, I hadn't thought of it like that I should have paid more attention" rather than pulling the full Dominic Cummings.

So whichever way you look at it sacking was the right thing to do. I doubt the leadership did it joyfully though as it simply sends her to the back benches freed of any collective responsibility.

My0My · 25/06/2020 18:09

As a trainee solicitor you are NOT a qualified solicitor. Would you like to be treated by a Medical student whilst believing them to be a fully qualified Doctor? No. Of course not. Being a trainee counts for nothing pre qualification.

She also gave Corbyn 10/10. I was amazed KS gave her a job in the first place. He didn’t need to. Anyway he’s given a big shot across the bows. Don’t re-tweet anything you wouldn’t put your name to. If you would put your name to it and it’s unacceptable, then you will be sacked.

My0My · 25/06/2020 18:12

She’s harmless on the back benches. The unions will be far more occupied about unemployment before long and Momentum are on the way out. So who wants to know what she thinks or says?

Lordamighty · 25/06/2020 18:20

If anyone doubts that the left are anti Semitic just take a look at her Twitter feed, they are out in force. Well done Keir Starmer.
