Layla Moran: Potential Lib Dem leadership candidate becomes first MP to come out as pansexual

Quote: Ms Moran, 37, told PinkNews that she had not previously had same-sex relationships and was “surprised” to find herself attracted to a woman, but added: “Sometimes, when you meet the right person, it just kind of happens.”

She said she was more comfortable with the label “pansexual” than “bisexual” or “gay” because it referred to the idea of love for an individual person for who they are and not their gender or sexual identity.

To be fair goosefoot I got completely distracted by the second part of your statement Grin

The reason Layla came out was a newspaper was threatening to write about her sexuality and relationship without her permission.

Agree the gendered souls, slapping, and faked emails stuff is insane.

But not up for ridiculing someone for how they describe their own sexuality.

Also it is silly that someone in a same sex relationship is still considered ‘news’. Why is it any of the press’s business?

LangCleg · 03/01/2020 09:11

No, she came out because a newspaper was threatening to write about her relationship with a woman who had to leave her job in politics due to allegedly helping to cover up sale of member data to an opposing political campaign, likely to scupper Layla's leadership chances.

Also it is silly that someone in a same sex relationship is still considered ‘news’. Why is it any of the press’s business?

It's not. See above. Layla is the one trying to make it about that.

It's a dead cat. Don't fall for it.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 03/01/2020 09:11

Heavier than the weight of oppression on us pansexuals? Huh? Thought not! Grin

It's woke signalling. That's all.

Rubidium · 03/01/2020 09:11

Saying you're pansexual as it's "about the person, not the gender", just screams (internalised) homophobia to me. "I'm still straight, honest, this is just a one off!"

I mean really, who cares?

hoodathunkit · 03/01/2020 09:12

I was asked about my sexuality by a long term acquaintance recently. She had attended a training day at work (NHS) about this issue.

I explained that I am only intersted in people sexually if I am inspired, impressed and in love with them and that their sex is a secondary issue.

She then informed me that I was pansexual according to the training she had received that day.

Personally I do not consider myself to be pansexual. I believe that being attracted to someone because you are passionate about shared causes, make each other laugh and have fallen in love, rather than about surface issues such as appearance and sex, is a fairly normal and natural state of affairs.

Singlewhiteguineapig · 03/01/2020 09:15

That’s nice for you dear.

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/01/2020 09:20

A Gp friend really hit it on the head recently, there's a desperation to label ourselves these days but it's really fucking up the kids.

Imo There's a need to be special and I blame TV and media.

I was reading my NEU mag (never used to but scan it now for the batshit) and there was a piece urging everyone to self identify as disabled on NEU forms etc. And I saw recently some random tweet that was rt by a respectable local lea advisor that you can self identify as autistic (as well as BAME, trans, gay etc.)

In an ideal world sexuality would be inconsequential. Disability is important to define but the wording leads you to believe anyone can make up a ailment as a disability. I don't think that's quite what the article meant but it's certainly the way this is being interpreted.

Tanith · 03/01/2020 09:24

Right. Well, that's the LibDems written off for the foreseeable, then.

And people ask why the centralists in Labour don't move to the LibDems 🙄

HandsOffMyRights · 03/01/2020 09:29

And another reason I won't be voting for these troons.

Is Sonia Poulton's video still available? This is the same Rosy Cobb who threatened Sonia - the dodgy dealings surrounding Cobb and the party in relation to A.Challenor are exposed in Sonia's documentary.

Sexequality · 03/01/2020 09:31

the integrity of a politician in a relationship with an alleged political fraudster.

My reading of the article is the Lib Dem lawyers were using fraudulent evidence supplied by the person Moran is in a relationship with to back up an allegation of criminal behaviour.

NotNowMrTumnus · 03/01/2020 09:33

I’m pansexual but that Mr Tumnus was a right stalking pITA. As for that bloody pipe Angry

Fieldofgreycorn · 03/01/2020 09:36

Nick Ferrari has just asked a sexuality ‘expert’ on LBC why Layla hasn’t described herself as lesbian or bisexual.

TinselAngel · 03/01/2020 09:39

I think we need to watch our language, as it would be a shame for this thread to be deleted.

My immediate reaction when I heard was "Oh so she has got skin in the game after all".

For me this is about honesty in an elected representative and possible party leader.

Firstly that she portrayed herself as a selfless ally to the LGBT when she was actually one of them. Secondly that she's in a relationship with somebody suspected of dishonesty.

Also- she really wants to be one of the cool girls doesn't she? Hmm

LangCleg · 03/01/2020 09:40

This is the same Rosy Cobb who threatened Sonia - the dodgy dealings surrounding Cobb and the party in relation to A.Challenor are exposed in Sonia's documentary.

Yes. Like I say: the pansexuality bullcrap is a dead cat. Layla wants us to be talking about that, not about the fact that the person she is in a relationship with is Rosy Cobb - the Rosy Cobb with various, serious, allegations against her and that politicians with leadership ambitions should be avoiding like the plague, regardless of sex or sexuality.

Dead cat.

Layla does not want us to be talking about the fact that she is in a relationship with a person who has done the things Rosy Cobb is alleged to have done.

So let's talk about that.

TinselAngel · 03/01/2020 09:42

Let's not forget she was responsible (with Helen Belcher) for burying anti trans widow policy in other proposals and getting it through the party conference, a strategy we've subsequently seen endorsed as a lobbying technique.

AutumnCrow · 03/01/2020 09:43

Yes I was using 'Flacking' to try to be witty but was too tired in the early hours to explain it in the end!

@MollyButton You ask, 'Now does anyone know anything about Daisy?' Which Daisy do you mean? Daisy Cooper?

AnyFucker · 03/01/2020 09:43

So, what is it again that the fragrant Ms Cobb has allegedly done ?

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 09:45

So rosy cobb has serious allegations against her

What are the allegations against her ?

Binterested · 03/01/2020 09:48

Dd told me in all earnestness that one of her friends at school had ‘come out’ as asexual. They were 12.

It made me quite cross actually that this poor young girl had been worried by her absence of sexual feeling and decided - with guidance from the school Pride club - that this must be the reason. As opposed to adults leaving her alone to find her own path in a few years time when she’s not also dealing with new school, blazer too big, don’t like hockey, do like pizza in the canteen but they’ve run out, when was history homework due in, do I like Billie Eilish or not ?

NotAnotherFeckingMuftiDay · 03/01/2020 09:49

Rosy Cobb was involved in this story. Daily Mail

AnyFucker · 03/01/2020 09:52

Ooh, Rosy. That's rather a nawty thing you might have done.

Fancy a potential party leader candidate aligning themselves with someone who could be capable of that.

theflushedzebra · 03/01/2020 09:53

This is the same Rosy Cobb who threatened Sonia - the dodgy dealings surrounding Cobb and the party in relation to A.Challenor are exposed in Sonia's documentary.

Oh it's that person!

I watched Sonia's documentary, and also couldn't believe someone in the Libdems could behave like that.

Falsifying emails is a really serious thing - it's a wonder this didn't come out before the election.

I would be seriously concerned my MP was involved with a person like Rosy Cobb.

AutumnCrow · 03/01/2020 09:54

I'm fascinated to know how faking an email for a political Party, and using its resources - drawn from members' subscriptions - to bring in the big gun lawyers to try to silence openDemocracy, is even remotely defensible in Moran's world.
