Layla Moran: Potential Lib Dem leadership candidate becomes first MP to come out as pansexual

Quote: Ms Moran, 37, told PinkNews that she had not previously had same-sex relationships and was “surprised” to find herself attracted to a woman, but added: “Sometimes, when you meet the right person, it just kind of happens.”

She said she was more comfortable with the label “pansexual” than “bisexual” or “gay” because it referred to the idea of love for an individual person for who they are and not their gender or sexual identity.

Obviously this thread should remain focussed on the actual political scandal

I'm trying, believe me.

Why did Swinson sign off the expenditure underpinning the legal threats to openDemocracy? Where do Moran and Cobb fit into the narrative?

It's interesting, I wonder if there is less of a journalistic appetite for digging into the LDs now they are largely irrelevant for the next few years? I say this because the Greens seemed to have lost the plot entirely but nothing was newsworthy until a paedo rapist in a loft got involved.

It's infuriating that they feel they can act so audaciously in the public eye and get away with it. Shows a total lack of respect for the public.

Sexequality

"cis" (for sake of definition)

You mean women who identify with harmful sex stereotypes? And therefore are at fault for having to deal with them?

No I did not. I don't actually understand your interpretation although I assume some point is being made.

I was using the term to make clear "pansexual" encompasses all options including the option of "not trans"

Sexequality · 03/01/2020 18:35

Ariad the terms for ‘not trans’ are woman, women, man, men, girl, boy.

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 22:36

Yeah Lang. Dead cat and that

Moran trying to deflect on her choice of partner who was suspended from LibDems and then left

And also her Dv when she hit her former partner

That’s a leader

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 03/01/2020 22:39

Is this genuinely the best the LibDems have in terms of potential leadership candidates?

littlbrowndog · 03/01/2020 22:45

Seems that way kittens.

A self confessed Dv Abuser and a deflector of her choice in a partner

TinselAngel · 03/01/2020 22:46

There's hardly anyone else left who hasn't already had a go.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 03/01/2020 23:43

I wonder if the people who post this sort of ahit believe they are in the mainstream?

I can't see Layla Moran taking the party in the right - more mainstream - direction tbh - all that seeing souls stuff. The media will make mincemeat out of her, just as they did Swinson.

WrathoFaeKlop · 04/01/2020 00:18

Layla Moran
Will be mincemeat in Pan
And DV'll be yesterday's news
The leadership race
Could be Layla's to face
And those souls will be left to abuse

AnneShirleyBlythe · 04/01/2020 00:22

What's with the bleddy pansexual label? It just makes people sound as though they want to sleep with everything, including inanimate objects.
My DD (14) did actually think that's what it meant. She told me a girl at school was pansexual and fancies objects. No wonder so many kids are confused!

TirisfalPumpkin · 04/01/2020 07:30

‘Pangender’ also used to be a thing, until someone pointed out identifying as all genders is colonialist as some are culture specific (2-spirit, etc) and only open to people from the culture. So suddenly these people’s innate and personal gender identities changed to accommodate this helpful call-out from Tumblr.

SophoclesTheFox · 04/01/2020 07:59

One day I would quite like to get up and not be disappointed by whatever the LibDems are up to. Yet again, today is not that day.

The relationship announcement has been beautifully framed to divert from the DV and the fraud, which is about the smartest thing we’ve seen coming out of the LibDems for a while. Sigh.

EverardDigby · 04/01/2020 08:36

I think true biphobia (not homophobia directed at bisexuals) is rare

There's a lot of you're easy type prejudice as mentioned by a PP, also individual partners of either sex being convinced you're going to run off with the opposite sex or feeling they're not giving you something you need, but the worst experience for me was being told as a teenager by the L&G community that bisexuals didn't exist (this was the 1980s/90s) and so trying to deny I was bisexual for 10 years, then when I finally had a relationship with a man losing most of my lesbian friends. The homophobia I experienced was never as damaging as that.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 04/01/2020 09:12

Homosexual/bisexual role models for our younger people? Brilliant, yes please.

Pansexual seems to be "I'm like a bisexual, but, I'd also shag someone who is gender fluid" - so is a conflation of sexual orientation and gender identity in one, confusing word?

Which gives us a Lib Dem who can't tell sex from gender, or sexual orientation from a wardrobe and feelings. How predictable.

The thing that's so irritating is her need to share this. Agree, it's a dead cat move, but, I'm pissed off that a senior female politician wants us to know who she might fancy in the future. That chat is fine when you're a teenage girl, really bloody disappointing from a woman in her position. FFS.

Good Post!

I not certain I understand the difference between bisexual and pansexual

There is no difference other than the labelling. Both are open to sexual relationships with people of either sex, based on their attraction to them as individuals.

Any suggestion that a pansexual is someone who floats above the material world, in disembodied form, not seeing or noticing bodies is obviously nonsense.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/01/2020 09:39

But would fit quite nicely with Layla’s psychic gifts GrinGrinGrin

RuffleCrow · 04/01/2020 10:56

There is an element of the desexualising of sexual attraction about pansexuality.

Goosefoot · 04/01/2020 13:05

Yes, like, "I'm really only attracted to their mind."

You wonder a bit about the self-awareness of someone who believes that.

I suppose though, to be fair, it might be that if someone in this position has in fact never really been attracted to women, they might just feel like bi-sexual gives the wrong impression.

It's always been a bit up in the air the extent to which we define sexuality as being about what people do vs what they feel. In normal life it's not usually an issue for people but it becomes a factor for example if you are doing scientific studies and you have to define your criteria carefully, many studies have been criticised for their definition and there are difficulties with all the choices.

Now that people re so concerned with creating themselves by describing their identity, perhaps it's to be expected that it becomes more and more specific?

Binterested · 04/01/2020 14:06

Is it a bit like that one which is to do with only being attracted to clever people?

RoyalCorgi · 04/01/2020 14:13

But would fit quite nicely with Layla’s psychic gifts

Now that Derek Acorah has passed over, there's a vacancy for someone with her talents. Might be a better match for her skill set than leadership of the Lib Dems.

Micaela64 · 04/01/2020 14:23

A bi friend of mine was told by one of the woke folk she should identify as Pansexual because Bisexual was "reinforcing the gender binary."

eBooksAreBooks · 04/01/2020 14:33

She appears to be with a woman. So she's a lesbian. So any previous relationships with males are scrubbed-out of history and she gets a shiny-new decided-by-you label does she?

She's no more a lesbian than someone who enjoys a Greggs vegan sausage roll alongside the odd steak-bake is a vegan.
