Men are appalling.

"Why has he been charged with sexual assault and not rape?"

That's what they call it in Arizona.

(he was reportedly reluctant to give a sample, which may have been a teensy clue.)

GrinitchSpinach · 23/01/2019 18:48

What a repulsive violent man. Working there since 2011... how many women and girls has he abused and raped? Angry

StealthPolarBear · 23/01/2019 19:29

They have arrested a man. Which is good but just one man.

StealthPolarBear · 23/01/2019 19:41

Sorry I had to search for this so assumed it hadn't been bumped

Reading the comments below a news report of this and I was struck by this comment

This person continued to work there knowing they were doing DNA tests, which leads me to think he thought there was a very good chance the child wasn't his (meaning he's not the only one who was doing this). Just a thought, and I really hope it's not true.

And it struck me that horrified as I was by the case I hadn't wanted to think about the possibility of multiple care attendants raping a woman in a PVS Sad I know NAMALT but too many fucking men are

She is not in a PVS. she is severely brain damaged but has some awareness and responds to people talking to her apparently. She has been that way since the age of 2, I feel sick at the thought of what she has been through since then and it's only come to light now.

nocoolnamesleft · 24/01/2019 02:17

Is it correct that Arizona law presents no bar to a rapist seeking parental rights for the child resulting from the rape? Urgh.

MrsTerryPratcett · 24/01/2019 05:44

How the hell does a nurse who arrived in the US as a Hatian Orphan lay his hands on $500 000 to post bail?

Bail bondsman I assume.

From the BBC article -
"There's no direct evidence that Mr Sutherland has committed these acts," Mr Gregan told reporters. "I know at this point there's DNA. But he will have a right to his own DNA expert."

Surprisingly he hasn't gone for the "I thought she consented" defence. He has gone for the very unusual "DNA isn't a real thing" defence.

Butteredghost · 24/01/2019 11:20

ETA: Mr Gregan is his lawyer

I hope her family hug her baby boy tight and never let this man anywhere near him.

Let's hope to fuck that no judge ever awards him visitation rights (although he should totally be sued to pay all the extra costs relating to her maternity care - presume she had a c section, with an additional specialist team to take care of her significant special needs - that’s gonna cost shitloads in the USA).

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/01/2019 15:51

Horrifically, she didn't have a c section - the pregnancy was apparently discovered by other staff when she was in labour and giving birth. She had had no maternity care at all. The belief is that the baby was born somewhat premature but otherwise ok.

It just emphasises to me the absolute assault to her person. She could have suffered all kinds of pregnancy complications and no one would have known. She could have died from preeclampsia, a placental abruption and so on. She was exposed to STDs. The list goes on of crimes committed against her.

BettyDuMonde · 24/01/2019 16:11

Fucking hell. That’s heartbreaking. Lack of maternity care is risky enough for otherwise healthy/able bodied women, let alone someone with such profound disabilities.

I was shocked to learn that she’d been in the same facility since early childhood - it was her lifelong home, not just a nursing home. She should’ve been safe in her own fucking home, for fucks sake.

I sometimes skip out on the threads about rape and violence against women and girls because it’s so hard to switch off from after reading it. I don’t think I will ever forget this woman’s story.

The police officer’s quotes about the baby are beautiful, mind you ☀️

So do I. Sometimes I see an important thread but can't bear to click. Even though I have been one of the lucky ones, never raped. Of course the first time a man sexually assaulted me I was 12, but I didn't even report it to anyone because it was on public transit and I didn't think it was that big a deal (had already absorbed that message, and he "only" pressed his erection against my bottom) and knew no one would believe me (absorbed that message too).

Adult males who were born male and socialized as boys and men cannot BEGIN to understand the collective trauma of womankind.

2ndWaveFeminist · 24/01/2019 17:36

GrinitchSpinach we absorbed those lessons so well and repeated experiences of the girls and women that didn't reinforce that the men around us do not want to hear what we've gone through.

rytonsister · 24/01/2019 18:23

It will be extremely easy to identify a suspect for this very quickly. DNA test baby and arrest all male carers who worked there at that time to take a dna sample (if law is similar in US to here).

AssassinatedBeauty · 24/01/2019 18:52

@rytonsister they have arrested a nurse who worked at the facilities and there is DNA evidence. He is denying it and looking to use his own DNA expert presumably to try and cast enough doubt on the DNA results to get a not guilty result.

rytonsister · 24/01/2019 18:59

Oops sorry yes dp
Just showed me. He hasn't got a hope in hell fwiw.

2ndWaveFeminist · 25/01/2019 11:00

Interesting article here on this sort of abuse, it was written before the DNA identification but since it focuses on the prevalence of abuse that doesn't take away from the article

BettyDuMonde · 25/01/2019 13:24

Fucking hell.

That article makes me want to start working as a carer, just so there is one less job vacancy for a shitty person to fill Angry

Deathraystare · 25/01/2019 17:03

I remember the scene from Kill Bill

There was also a scene from a Pedro Almadovar film about a Down's syndrome guy obsessed with a ballerina. He worked at the hospital she was in (after a car accident left her in a coma). The nurses realised her periods had stopped and eventually worked out why he volunteered to be there at night to look after her so much....
