Men are appalling.

Men's forums are cracking vegetable jokes about this.

Of course they are. Of fucking course. There is no surprise for me there at all. TeeJay and Anti and Russell are all over Reddit telling the men off. Right? Because NAMALT? Right? And one dude cracked the joke and every single other man is telling that man off and reporting him... Because goodness knows NAMALT. And they aren't trying to outdo themselves making worse and worse jokes about a powerless woman, raped and abused. Because NAMALT. Of course seriously, the MOST important thing to do is tell women off for talking about male violence.

You know what? I campaigned against Section 28 because gay people were being attacked by straight people. I campaigned against The Criminal Justice Bill because the rights of vulnerable people were being attacked by privileged people. I am actively involved in Truth and Reconciliation because white people attacked First Nations people. Never ONCE have I felt the fucking need to point out that not all straight, white, privileged people are like that.

And you know what? White people do suck as a class. Colonising half the world and shitting over everyone. Just because I personally didn't do it doesn't mean I don't share the benefit and share the responsibility.

MrsTerryPratcett · 05/01/2019 21:37

Last time I looked rape was illegal

It might as well not be, considering the conviction rate.

Woman in PVS for 10 years raped, gives birth
LuggsaysNotaWomen · 05/01/2019 21:54

Nevermind not spotting the pregnancy, how did they not notice that someone was having unprotected sex with a patient that they were administering daily care.

Unprotected sex leaves evidence and the chances of the pregnancy being the result of a singular incident are little to none (although not impossible of course), so a woman, who cannot advocate for herself is being raped and the staff are turning a blind eye.

If chaperoning all male staff is the only way to stop vulnerable female patients being impregnated, then yes, men as a class are the problem.

www.inquisitr.com/5236982/arizona-police-launch-sexual-assault-investigation-after-woman-in-vegetative-coma-for-10-year This article is disturbing i think is a facility that has particular issues with that kind of thing.

bluescreen · 05/01/2019 22:53

It's in the Guardian now.

Victim advocate Tasha Menaker, chief strategy officer of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence, said it would be appropriate for police to run DNA tests on male employees at the facility.

Hacienda Healthcare describes itself as Arizona’s leading provider of specialized healthcare services for medically fragile and chronically ill infants, children, teens, and young adults as well as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A spokesman for Arizona governor Doug Ducey said the reports were “deeply troubling” and that the state was re-evaluating its contract and regulatory authority over Hacienda Healthcare to tighten up patient safety measures.

Can't help wondering how many more cases like this there will be.

ChesterGreySideboard · 05/01/2019 22:56

And how many other women are suffering the same and not happening to get pregnant?

Everything about this is horrific and I agree this speaks to wider problems in the organisation.

I think men do know what other men are like - just listen to how straight men talk about gay men and the fear they have of them. It's because that is how they would behave given access to women in the same ways.

Men as a class are like that. Even if they would not rape (and many will admit they might, especially if the word rape isn't used in the question) they will make excuses and defend the rapist. Men all benefit from rape culture and it is rare to see a man call another man out.

The best you will get from most men is chivalry I.e protecting women from everyone but themselves.

AntiSocialInjusticePacifist · 06/01/2019 00:00

Funnily enough I don’t actually spend a lot of time around men who crack those kinds of jokes. They don’t tend to be the types of people I enjoy the company of. Furthermore once I rushed to a woman’s aid in an alley in the middle of the night, so fuck yes if I see something going wrong I will step in. I’m not exactly predisposed to violence nor particularly skilled at it and I was shitting myself the whole time.

I can mostly handle general terms like like “men are xxx” I just question their utility, but if you’re going to single me out for not policing reddit for you then I think we’re gonna have problems.

I don’t wade in for just women either just after Christmas some nimrod decided to drive his smoking car next to a petrol station, and I told him to shut his fucking engine off and I’d help him push his car away from all the flammable petrol.

PrivacySetting · 06/01/2019 00:17

then I think we’re gonna have problems

Who is this guy?? Ffs 🤣 joker

You helped 1 women, once?? Every women i know, every woman YOU know, will have prevented countless other women from being assaulted by countless men. Over and over again. You dont know the half of it.

Ollivander84 · 06/01/2019 00:35

I can't believe they didn't notice it. As a carer I noticed if someone's feet are colder than usual, or they have a red mark in an unusual place or a new bruise
The only way I can think that they wouldn't notice early on is if it wasn't regular carers so people didn't see her often

InionEile · 06/01/2019 04:38

Of course not all men are rapists. But 99% of rape is committed by men, certainly all rape that results in pregnancy. And men rape other men too so women are not the only victims of male violence.

The problem is rape culture. All men, even 'nice guys', are socialised to believe that they are owed sex as a right, that they should relate to women as sexual objects first and people second. They might not be conscious of that socialisation and most would never act on it to the point of rape but that is how we end up in a situation where a woman in a PVS can become pregnant by rape.

It also occurred to me how frequently this must be occurring but no-one knows because the rapist uses condoms Confused. It seems to me that the only way we can to protect patients like this woman would be to install 24-7 cameras in wards with comatose patients.

I'm actually waiting now for the rapist to be revealed and for him to claim that actually he fell in love with the woman, and he could sense from her response that she loved him back or some equally ridiculous shit and the media will fawn over him and they'll be described as star-crossed lovers and Hollywood will make a movie about their 'love affair' and how love comes in all shapes and sizes and it'll be re-written as some fairytale. I'm not even joking. Hollywood has been guilty of worse in the past e.g. Mannequin, Weird Science etc.

ChesterGreySideboard · 06/01/2019 15:53

But 99% of rape is committed by men

100%. Rape needs a penis. Men have penises (which in this world is now a controversial statement and hate crime).

endofthelinefinally · 06/01/2019 16:50

This is one of the most horrific things I have read.
I believe that if this is not covered up, it will turn out to be organised, institutionally facilitated rape. I think it is likely that all the vulnerable residents are being abused and that the people working there know this.
It is not feasible that staff doing personal care could fail to notice a pregnancy.
That poor, poor woman. She must have suffered terribly.
Such evil, disgusting behaviour.

ThisHasReallyPIssedMeOff · 06/01/2019 17:17

100%. Rape needs a penis. Men have penises (which in this world is now a controversial statement and hate crime).

Quite. The only rapes committed by women are committed by those with 'ladydicks'.

InionEile · 06/01/2019 17:25

Well, I hate to be graphic but the legal definition of rape is not just PIV anymore and rape with an object counts too in some legal jurisdictions. In others it’s ‘just’ sexual assault but I guess I could revise my statement to 99.9% of rape is committed by men. Either way, rape culture is the problem.

tubspreciousthings · 06/01/2019 17:39

Hmm - I thought the legal definition of rape still required a penis, and non-penis rape was classed as "sexual assault by penetration "

PreseaCombatir · 06/01/2019 17:55

In England you need to have a penis to commit rape, but in the US you don’t.

I just can’t help think I about how many poor women this happens to around the world.
Hope they DNA test every man, and that they find the sick bastards who did this

InionEile · 06/01/2019 18:10

I’m in the US so that explains the confusion. I’m thinking of child abuse cases brought against women here, for example, only a tiny number of cases but it’s a possibility.

LangCleg · 06/01/2019 18:42

Technically, you can be a woman convicted of rape in the UK (an actual woman, that is). You can be convicted under joint enterprise. But it's vanishingly rare, so ignore the nit pick!

sackrifice · 06/01/2019 18:47

A woman cannot have raped this women unless she brought fresh sperm with which to inseminate her.

SharkAttack1972 · 06/01/2019 21:56

Do you not see that many many women everyday suffer because of men. I have 2 lovely sons that I love very much. However, I am pretty much appalled by men in general really. I find it odd that you rushed to defend men! We need men to stand up and admit there is a problem!

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName · 06/01/2019 21:57

Good grief. I’m hard to shock but this is shocking.

SharkAttack1972 · 06/01/2019 22:00

I was replying to Russell sprouts! Sorry I find it appalling how men don't see how bad there sex is! Its getting worse for women everyday, not better. Is it me or is it getting worse??

LangCleg · 06/01/2019 22:38

I think we’re gonna have problems.

You having problems with us is something we should concern ourselves with? Are you new here or something?
