So in a few weeks time (1st September), it’s the start of meteorological Autumn. TheWeatherOutlook has some early thoughts about it here and Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Chilly is ok, endless wet days/storms ~ not wanted.

Autumn 2024 weather

Is a chilly autumn more likely than in recent years?

We've got heavy rain (had thunder and lightning earlier) and according to the metoffice, it isnt forecast to get any better until early Tuesday morning.

Updated warnings for today and tomorrow and an Amber warning for some areas tomorrow.

Finally some heavy rain here after a glorious day yesterday so I don’t need to water anything apart from what’s in the greenhouse. Still very warm though and not much breeze. We aren’t far from Abbotsbury which has its own microclimate so weather forecasts are rarely accurate here.

I said it was very warm but we have just been to the beach and it is properly hot! Lots of weather around us though.

Those clouds do not look real! Can you poke them with a long stick and wrap it around like candy floss?

Had the storm yesterday with the poor stray refusing to come up until it ended, and non stop rain today. It's been so dark outside, like a permanent dusk. Oh well, got my candles out and lit them instead Smile

How bad is rainfall likely to be in the amber zone tomorrow? They’re talking about 100mm of rain I think. Should surface flooding be expected?

I think as the day goes on, anywhere in the amber zone could see some flooding but (looking at Netweather's rain chart), southern parts of the amber warning area (e.g. the Cotswolds but I would extend the risk towards Bristol/parts of S. Wales) could be especially at risk of seeing some flooding.

The problem for places in the warning areas, is the system moves in and just sits there for most of the day before disintegrating/moving away towards the south/SE, during the evening/overnight.

I looked at the long range forecast, it's a wet one for many.

blobby10 · 23/09/2024 10:43

We are in Leicestershire and all the weather apps are showing it to be raining heavily right now but its not!! Its dark and humid and misty but definitely not the forecast heavy rain! Really hoping to get some decent thunder and lightning Grin

GloriaSmud · 23/09/2024 10:47

The Amber warning area's been adjusted ~ I said this morning that I thought Bristol should be included and it looks like the metoffice have done that. The size of the area has been reduced as well ~ it doesn't go as far as Hull/that coastline area now.

blobby10 ~ I know! I'm at the western edge of the city and it's just dull/mist/fog at the moment!

I've seen the photos in the media now, awful for home owners. We had terrible floods in N Wales twice a few decades ago. It took up to a year for some people to return to their homes.

It's an awful experience.

WeAreNotCookingTheSpoon · 23/09/2024 12:05

We were in the amber zone, now in the yellow. Not rained here at all yet

dodobookends · 23/09/2024 14:42

We had to drive on the M25, the M1 and through Luton and Hitchin yesterday afternoon in what I can only describe as a monsoon deluge of truly Biblical proportions.
So @WeAreNotCookingTheSpoon if it rains anything like that where you are today, stay where you are.

I have never seen so much water in my life. Luton-on-Sea anyone? Ye Gods. The roads were turned into rivers, overflowing the kerbs everywhere, and how we and everyone else drove through it all I don't know. The water was a foot deep at the sides of the road and we could only just manage to squeeze through by going on the other side of the carriageway where it was only 6 inches deep. The speed of the running water was incredible. It went on for miles and miles with water absolutely everywhere And the rains kept on coming and coming. We took refuge in a pub in the end, because it was just getting worse and worse, and we waited there until the water started to subside a bit. I've driven through some truly terrible weather in the past and never before been all that worried, but I was genuinely scared yesterday.

Heavy rain all day in S Wales. Perfect weather for the stinking cold I’ve had!

justasking111 · 23/09/2024 18:05

Been reports of glacial freezing weather on the way. Heard on TV at dentists so not sure how accurate it is.

I want to finally light the log burner tonight.

justasking111 · 23/09/2024 18:11

Sheesh, snuggling under the duvet if this is accurate

30 miles from Luton here and yes the rain was biblical. Lots of localised flooding. Some initial rainfall readings over 110mm in 24 hours.

I think it's an early SMOWMAGEDDON!!

What I've seen is something along the lines of "precipitation might fall as snow on high ground in Scotland and Wales" and "possibility of frost in exposed areas"

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 24/09/2024 09:24

Where I am in Oxfordshire we've had 100mm of rain over the last three days. That's nearly two months worth of rain.

justasking111 · 24/09/2024 10:28

We lit the fire last night. Well it's nearly October.

Jakers @GloriaSmud looks like northern Europe gets a battering a lull then a second battering that will hit us. The barometer readings may give me a weather headache.

GloriaSmud · 25/09/2024 11:24

justasking111 ~ we are indeed in for another lot of weather.

Unsurprisingly, there are weather warnings for tomorrow and Friday. In a line from S. Wales through the Midlands to East Anglia, those areas look like they're going to get it worst so I'm not surprised that the warning runs from 5pm tomorrow until 10am Friday.

I'm so cold my sciatica/arthritis had me near paralysed this morning with the pain. The fire will be lit this afternoon again.
