So in a few weeks time (1st September), it’s the start of meteorological Autumn. TheWeatherOutlook has some early thoughts about it here and Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Chilly is ok, endless wet days/storms ~ not wanted.

Autumn 2024 weather

Is a chilly autumn more likely than in recent years?

Given the amount of rain we've been having, we'll be lighting the fire too.

justasking111 · 25/09/2024 23:31

Jakers, here in N Wales it's going to be Noah's ark weather from tomorrow right through to Monday, barring a lull on Saturday morning.

Thunderstorms in the south west overnight tonight.

Good stout shoes for the splish splash to the hairdresser's tomorrow.

GloriaSmud · 26/09/2024 07:39

Going to be a horrible day here (and for quite a bit of the country as well, from the Midlands southwards and the N/NE, Wales and parts of Northern Ireland.) The Metoffice are giving us a break in the rain during the middle of the day but after that, it's rain from 4pm right through to 5am tomorrow morning.

It's sort of looking drier for the weekend (might be the odd shower about) but Sunday evening/overnight, another low pressure system crosses the country which brings more rain (might possibly be some weather warnings for that?)
<sigh>

Is there no drainage under that stretch of road?

Clutterbugsmum · 26/09/2024 12:22

Yes there is normally but we had so much rain the local pumping station flooded, and they don't know how long it will take to repair. But we got over 2 months of rain is 24 hours.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 26/09/2024 12:32

Thanks, thought it might be something like that. Hope it gets sorted out soon, a big road like that being blocked must be causing a lot of problems.

We've had a crazy amount of rain and it's just starting again now.

justasking111 · 26/09/2024 14:00

Our council will be panicking now. They rarely clear storm drains as they should. We've had some bad floods as a result

blobby10 · 26/09/2024 14:20

Still not raining where I work near Leicester although its gone very dark. Apparently its pissing down only 3 miles away to the south and my home town is showing on NetWeather as having about 8mm of rain in the next hour!

GloriaSmud · 26/09/2024 14:46

blobby10 ~ I'm near the M1/M69 junction and it's started raining here. I've just had to meet DD2 off the bus (about a mile as the crow flies) and she said it was 'chucking it down.' It was bone dry where we are but as I got near to the meeting point, it started raining so it was very localised!

It's now raining and we've had a rumble of thunder.

We aren't far apart! its raining and thundering here now too - I have to walk the dog on my way home so not looking forward to it Grin

Apparently I'm in the white section (thank goodness) but that just means I won't get any of the amber warning rain/thunder. It's been fairly dry today and yesterday, just the odd spit, so thank you to everyone who's had the extra so I don't have the wet stuff.

*goes off to read the pumping station article

More rain and thunder rumbling around at the moment.....

On the edge of the Amber zone here. It's been raining most of the afternoon and evening, with a bit of thunder too. Some localised flooding already...

countrygirl99 · 27/09/2024 05:42

Going away this weekend. Most of our routes out of North Beds are closed and it's still raining.

GloriaSmud · 27/09/2024 06:53

We didn't have much rain overnight until (looking at the netweather radar), it looks like it really started coming down about 4.30am.

The weekend doesn't look too bad but then more rain comes in Sunday night and it looks unsettled (as in showery) for most of the country for a few days. At the moment, it doesn't really dry up until Wednesday and then it looks ok for a few days.....

We dropped DD off at Leicester for uni last weekend - she DOES NOT like thunder and lightning at all and has seen more so far than we've had all year at home! On a field trip today and it's apparently very cold but at least dry for now............not quite the welcome to uni life we were expecting though. By contract we have sunshine today (east lancs) so I'm risking washing outside even though it's cold so if it starts raining it's my fault

justasking111 · 27/09/2024 14:30

I've given up on the washing line bits in the conservatory. Otherwise it's the tumble dryer

GloriaSmud · 29/09/2024 07:19

After a not too bad weekend for most (although with chilly mornings ~ our heating is most definitely kicking in now!), Autumn returns this afternoon, overnight and into tomorrow, and there are some weather warnings for the next 2 days for some areas.

UK weather warnings

Met Office UK weather warnings for rain, wind, snow, ice, fog, thunderstorm, lightning and extreme heat.
