So in a few weeks time (1st September), it’s the start of meteorological Autumn. TheWeatherOutlook has some early thoughts about it here and Netweather’s thoughts are here.

Chilly is ok, endless wet days/storms ~ not wanted.

Is a chilly autumn more likely than in recent years?

justasking111 ~ I think they'll probably get quite a good covering this week.

It looks like the hills of the north midlands/northern England, along with the very north of Scotland will get some good amounts today and tomorrow, with maybe some snowfall at lower levels overnight/into tomorrow. It matches up with the metoffice's weather warnings.

Netweather's thoughts on the wintry start to the week.

@GloriaSmud do you think it could be time for snow watch, my favourite thread every year ❄️🌨️☃️

countrygirl99 · 18/11/2024 07:46

I'm in Finland at the moment. It snowed last night and my train back to the airport is delayed😆

GloriaSmud · 18/11/2024 10:26

@cheeseybeans19 ~ you could be right! The GFS model is going as far as the 4th December now so maybe a combined Christmas/snow watch thread to make life simpler? I'll sort one out later today..🌨❄

@GloriaSmud A combined Christmas/snow watch thread is a great idea! Currently sleet here in Leicestershire, snow is forecast for overnight and I have everything crossed for a covering!

InMySpareTime · 18/11/2024 21:52

The Manchester snow shield is breached! It's settling on cars but the ground is still too wet.

GloriaSmud · 19/11/2024 07:04

@cheeseybeans19 ~ apologies that it's late but here we go!

What the hell is coming our way Saturday? My weather app is forecasting 20mm of rain for S Wales, 13mm of it all in the morning. Big storm?

gingercat02 · 19/11/2024 08:23

We have had a couple of heavy short sleet showers but no snow (NE England coast)

DD is at uni in Leicester and was very unimpressed this morning to see snow and it's apparently freezing! Should be used to it given that we're in the wilds of East Lancashire!

GloriaSmud · 19/11/2024 10:58

TheOnlyMrsW ~ (also in Leicester here) I was surprised last night to find we were covered by a revised metoffice weather warning and heavy snow forecast for an hour or two this morning. We got a slight covering but nothing too bad.

MotherOfCatBoy ~ that's a low pressure system coming in from the west. At the moment, it looks like the centre of it will eventually cross the northern parts of Scotland, over the weekend/into Monday. It does look like it'll produce quite a lot of rain for Wales/England (although that might start off as snow before turning to rain) but snow for the north/Scotland. And windy as well, especially up the Irish sea (wondering whether there might be some wind/possibly rain warnings to come?)

@GloriaSmud mm, sounds like fun!

gingercat02 · 19/11/2024 22:38

We have snow, not much, but covering the grass!

First frost of the year here but sun out now. Looks very pretty but with luck the ice on the car will have defrosted by the time I need to go out.
We are forecast gales at the weekend though, so need to have a pootle around the garden to check everything is safely anchored.

GloriaSmud · 21/11/2024 07:19

A rather chilly -4.4C here (Leicester) this morning and it's going to be a cold day ~ we might get a 'high' of 3C later on.

After the first frost yesterday we now have the first snow. It’s coming down quite heavily. Wonderful to just sit and watch it and grateful I don’t have to go out unless I want to.

Storm on Saturday has been named - Bert.
Heavy rain through Saturday and Sunday, especially in southern and western parts of the UK, will also bring impacts for some with a number of warnings in place. We expect 50-75 mm of rainfall quite widely within the warning areas, but in excess of 100 mm is possible over high ground in parts of Wales and southwest England.

Going to be bad on our western coastline

BriansGotHisWinkyOutAgain · 07/12/2024 15:20

How is everyone managing with Darragh? It's very intense here in the NW

InMySpareTime · 07/12/2024 15:21

A bit blowy but nothing troublesome in Manchester

IDareSay · 08/12/2024 11:00

Pretty bad down here on the south west coast and we weren't even in the red area. Large part of town without power since early hours of Friday and not forecast to be back on until 6pm. Friends in nearby villages the same, all freezer contents lost which is annoying and expensive.
A lot of Christmas events cancelled which will be hard on the small businesses running them and attending them.
Numerous roads closed due to power lines coming down along with fallen trees.
Two nights of wondering if our roof would survive, tiles lifting and banging all night, but can't see any major damage, so we got off lightly apart from some minor damage in the garden.
