I came across a very depressing Daily Fail article today saying the Met office is predicting an exceptionally wet summer. I really hope they are wrong!

I came across a very depressing Daily Fail article today saying the Met office is predicting an exceptionally wet summer. I really hope they are wrong!

The beginning of today's Met Office video says, rumours of the summer forecast are doing the rounds. But what have we said about the summer so far? What can we say about a whole season?

She spends the first couple of minutes of the video debunking the rumours. In summary, they are expecting the summer to be pretty average in most ways, except temperatures may be warmer than average due to global warming.

It's just clickbait from the Fail.

Deep Dive 28/05/2024 – Sunny start to summer - Met Office weekly weather forecast UK

This is an in-depth Met Office UK Weather forecast for the next week and beyond. Summer forecasts rumours are going around, but what can we say at this stage...

Also saw on Netweather that Edinburgh had 285% of the usual long term average rainfall for May.
Today, blue sky and 22C.

Lovely here today. I sat in the garden this afternoon sunbathing. It's definitely summery

Where I am (home counties( I'm still waiting for the sun! We've had the central heating on the last few days, and I was watching tv last night with a hot water bottle on my lap.
My summer clothes are still in the loft!!!

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/06/2024 09:38

Making the most of the lively weather while it is here. Was stunning yesterday and looks like it’ll be better today. Managed to gets loads of laundry out on the line and dug the sun cream out of the cupboard for a long walk along the sea front.

Plan is for lots more sitting outside today. (Not all in the sun my pasty white skin will burn to a crisp).

I'm curious about the opinions of our lovely experts

Met Office claiming it's been the warmest spring since 1884

I know they are using the figures that they gave us throughout spring

I know these figures are wrong and many of us left the house wrongly dressed in the morning because we were told it would warm up after early commuting hours, then it got colder as the day went on.

But why are all these figures so incorrect? Previously, forecasts have been very reliable.

Obviously technological change abounds....so what's happened that's made it all skewed?

GloriaSmud · 04/06/2024 15:51

EmeraldRoulette ~ I think it's because there's a difference between warmth (as in °C) and amount of sunshine. So it can feel warm when the sun is out even though the temperature might only be 8 or 9°C.

I think our Spring can be summed up here where the metoffice says that although it was warm, it was also dull, with below-average sunshine, so we all feel that it was a chilly Spring rather than the warm one that the metoffice are reporting.

Warm May and spring for the UK

The UK had its warmest May and meteorological spring on record according to provisional Met Office figures in what was also a wet and dull season for many.

@GloriaSmud thanks.

I don't classify 9 as warm if it's sunny 😂 it's cold no matter what!

I'm living in a less warm flat than before but it's still very warm in here and I am glad of it.

Ok it’s June - and I’m looking ahead at the forecast to mid June and it just doesn’t look to be warming up much. Disappointing! I don’t want an insane heatwave. Just something a bit more summery than what we have now.

It's lovely here in the south east. I've got all the windows and back doors open and sunshine streaming in. Not hot but not cold. Think the north is much cooler today

Delatron · 05/06/2024 17:26

Yes it’s nice enough if it was April or May. But I have summer dresses to wear and outdoor events coming up and 16 degrees is not cutting it!

I’d quite like it to get up to at least the low - mid 20s. At least it’s not raining and yes it’s been pleasant enough today. I just can’t see any warming up in the forecast- in fact it’s been revised down. I know this will make lots of people happy though

I don’t think I can cope with another rubbish summer.

justasking111 · 05/06/2024 18:47

Went out for lunch beside the seaside. Was blowing a hoolie, dog walkers, adults and children wrapped up. The kite surfers were having fun though. You can just spot one in the picture.

Looks like rain this evening, it's bally cold, the heating has just kicked in.

Summer 2024
Delatron · 05/06/2024 18:59

Yes it’s so changeable. No idea what to wear. Would just like some warm, settled weather.

EmeraldRoulette · 05/06/2024 19:33

I am in the Southeast as well and it has been absolutely shitty all day.

The sun has just come out really really strongly, about 7.

if this had been forecast, I could have made the most of it - but now I am lying here in a tired heap after doing my weights workout in a suddenly hot room which was quite cold earlier. (Kids screaming outside so didn't open window).

I do think this is incredibly pants weather for June actually... as a PP said, if it was April... yeah ...okay.

But honestly it was cold today for June. I had soup for lunch!

I really really want to know what the hell happened to weather forecasts.

they used to be quite accurate, hour by hour. It would suddenly be an increase in temperature in the evening and you could plan around it. Or is the weather so unsettled they might as well put "dunno" on the web page?!

Delatron · 05/06/2024 19:39

They simply cannot get the weather forecasts right at the moment.

We have a local weather forecasting group on Facebook who are normally quite accurate. They got everyone excited about a warm and sunny Saturday this Saturday just gone. It was freezing and the sun didn’t come out all day. It makes planning for anything so difficult.

The differences in the same area are huge I have noticed that too. I can leave here all warm and sunny and get into London for work and be freezing and grey
