As we’re a few weeks away from the start of meteorological Winter (1st December), some weather websites have some thoughts on what the weather might have in store for us over the next few months.

The Weather Outlook started very early, in September Xmas Shock but October's thoughts are here ~ The Weather Outlook.
And Netweather’s thoughts are here.

It does look like we may well be shifting to a colder regime by mid month. Now what that will look like is up in the air. (groan!). Some of the models are showing quite the winter scene.

Just had a quick peek. Nor' easterlies. But we've been here before.

It's sunny and warm today here. My Bougainville is sprouting on the windowsill

Perihelion · 02/02/2024 19:28

I'm so bored of the seemingly constant wind this winter. It's another day today with + 40mph gusts. It might be 13C but it doesn't feel like it.
The last two decent snow events in Edinburgh have been in February.
For once I'm hoping no snow near the end of the month as DD has a long awaited driving test.

@Perihelion constantly windy down south too, really annoying.

Updated thoughts from Netweather.
And the long range forecast from the metoffice....both say colder weather is on the way with the possibility of snow....❄

9th~18th February
Long range forecast from the metoffice....
Cold air already established across the northern UK is likely to extend to all parts through next weekend. As it does so there is a risk of some significant snowfall for parts of the UK, perhaps central areas most prone to this as the but this aspect is very uncertain at this stage. Across the north cold throughout with snow showers tending to focus on northeastern areas while for the far south the period may start of with some rain and near average temperatures, before the cold air reaches here by the start of next week. Windy at times, especially so in some eastern areas where a notably wind chill is expected. Temperatures ranging from rather mild in the south at first, to cold, perhaps very cold in the north.

19th February~4th March
Although there is still some uncertainty, conditions most likely to be drier and more settled overall for much of the UK with lighter winds mainly from the north or northwest but potential for some stronger winds at times later on. This would increase the likelihood of colder conditions developing more widely for a time with potential for fog and notable frosts alongside wintry showers across the north/northwest or more widely as any isolated fronts move through later in the period.

Week ahead: mild start, rain for most by mid-week, then turning colder with snow possible

Mild conditions continuing into the start of the new week, very wet across western Scotland. Rain spreading southeast to all parts by mid-week, turning wet and windy from Thursday, but with snow in the mix for some, as colder air tries to push south.

Blowing hard all day today, wasn't expecting that.

Snow for husbands birthday perhaps. Perhaps I should alter the restaurant booking.

ListenLinda · 05/02/2024 09:58

Yellow weather warning for snow on Thurs & Fri for my area. Meant to be going for a meal Thurs night for Mums birthday.

GloriaSmud · 05/02/2024 10:09

Yes ~ snow weather warning just been issued by the metoffice for Thursday and Friday.

I'm covered by it here (Leicester) but think it might be a bit marginal as we're on the edge so could end up with sleet/rain.

Why are the temps so high, it hasn't been properly cold this winter. It's not right that I've spent a lot of Jan and Feb sweaty

grass67 · 11/02/2024 11:57

Global warming! People thought it would bring nice warm summers and were flippant about it.
The reality, warm winters, excessive rain, draught, flooding, fire The planet is dying. I'm pleased I haven't needed much heating on, but long term, it's terrible.

MotherOfCatBoy · 11/02/2024 18:49

The rain is doing my head in. Agree with you @grass67 it’s climate change. We didn’t get this much sustained rain or as many downpours even a decade ago. And I mean I live in Wales, it’s wet, but it wasn’t all the bloody time!

That'll be the collapse of the climate 😞

I'm a complete doomer when it comes to the climate but I don't think the planet as such is dying. We're doing our best to kill it but in all honesty it will just become too harsh for humans to exist comfortably. The next 100 years or so are going to be dreadful but some sort of order will be returned when Gaia has put us back in our box. I realise that I sound like a complete nutjob but I've been following the situation very closely for nearly 50 years and it's panning out badly for us and all the wildlife currently in existence which is truly heartbreaking, we could have been so good 😞

Disturbia81 · 11/02/2024 19:38

I think what confuses me is that it doesn't seem to be following a pattern, I remember being in pain from the sustained cold temps last winter. I'm out and about a lot and kept buying those heat things for your pocket.
So then you think it's not changed too much.
Then years come like this. I guess you have to look at the big picture over the last decades

grass67 · 11/02/2024 20:58

But earth will become a cycle of flooding, fires and famine. Temperatures will become unbearable. It won't sustain life. That's a planet dying surely? Nothing will be left. An absolutely perfect planet with everything to survive, massive diversity.
Humans are the problem, we are a huge pest for this perfect planet in a solar system of crappy planets. can you imagine how aliens would view us? We had it all. We ruined it.
Makes me sad. Not so much for me, but future generations.

I saw this and had to copy for you. It's so true. 😂😂

Mud season hasn't ended yet from last year :/

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/02/2024 22:35

I have a book about 72 seasons. I think we could just change them all to mud season.

I'm hoping against all hope, that yes it gets very much hotter but that we pull ourselves back from the brink and gradually tail off our use of fossil fuels. If this new world can adapt then it may be ok? Populations will collapse in lots of places naturally anyhow, I need to believe this to keep positive that we can pull ourselves out of this complete shit show we've created 🙏

Perihelion · 12/02/2024 21:15

Busy atmosphere over Scotland tonight. Squall lines coming from the North West, wind from the south west.
Just had some thunder graupel.
It was actually sunny earlier.

justasking111 · 12/02/2024 21:58

What's graupel?

justasking111 · 12/02/2024 21:59

Cold and dry tonight. Rain for four days from tomorrow 😭
