As we’re a few weeks away from the start of meteorological Winter (1st December), some weather websites have some thoughts on what the weather might have in store for us over the next few months.

The Weather Outlook started very early, in September Xmas Shock but October's thoughts are here ~ The Weather Outlook.
And Netweather’s thoughts are here.

It appears to be raining heavily for a change.

GloriaSmud · 21/02/2024 08:24

RafaistheKingofClay ~ it does indeed. I'm so fed up of doing wet/muddy dog walks and seeing flooded fields everywhere.

DH has just got back from a walk , muddy dogs and dickheads on the road he grumbled 🙈

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 21/02/2024 09:13

The river here overflowed onto a main road yesterday. That isn't a big deal as it happens regularly but what is a big deal is that the brown froth on the water indicates sewage and, given that we're in the Thames Water area, it's very likely to be sewage.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2024 10:04

I'm entirely sick of it all and totally glum. Its not just the relentless wet, but its also the lack of sunshine. Its been a very dull winter here. I am so fed up.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/02/2024 10:10

I complained about no snow but hat week of cold and dry was a breath of fresh air.

Just had new carpets laid so am enforcing a no shoes indoors policy. I’d like to keep them mud free for at least a week. Should have gone for a red/orange Jurassic coast mud colour tbh.

It is unsurprising Gloria. Updated the weather warnings page.

There is a risk of some post frontal thunderstorms I think, after the cold front goes through. So there are two things to watch for tomorrow: High and perhaps squally winds, very heavy rain as the cold front goes through, then some possible thunderstorms to follow.

Given the ongoing flood situation in some parts of Scotland and England, it seems tidiest to create a weather warnings thread, rather than posting man...

Ugh, and on the relentless grey, dull and damp goes...

Delatron · 21/02/2024 11:36

It’s awful! So depressing. I’m planning on retiring to a different country or maybe spending 6 months (i.e winter) somewhere else. I don’t mind cold, I don’t mind snow but I need sunshine and not constant rain or grey cloud!

I can't even see any hopes of sustained improvement through to mid March.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/02/2024 11:38

x post with Gloria! I clearly have my eeyore hat on today.

We get brown froth it's a type of algae that we shouldn't have at this time of year because it's usually colder. I wouldn't let dogs near it though.

justasking111 · 21/02/2024 12:11

The magnolia is covered in buds. This warm spell is lasting too long. Our root vegetables are going to be more expensive. Cauliflower in the shops the size of a grapefruit. The last bag of potatoes I bought have zero flavour no matter how you cook, serve them. Mash, baked, hasselback zero flavour and odd texture

Here's the discharge map. Where we are there are currently four active discharges. In summer 2022, when the water was low, you could smell the sewage.

Our map shows near real-time information on when and where storm discharge activity may be happening near you.

I just noticed mine was too. It’s too early for it!

Delatron · 21/02/2024 13:04

Thames Water are a nightmare. I don’t know how they get away with it. They recently had a catastrophic failure’ near us - thousands of litres of sewage pumped in the the river. Nothing happens/changes. Last time lots of wildlife died. Very sad

justasking111 · 21/02/2024 13:51

After a morning of rain brilliant sunshine now.

GloriaSmud · 22/02/2024 07:51

Netweather have issued one of their Severe Weather Warnings.

Rain has just started here (Leicester) Good view of the band of rain on Netweather's weather radar.

It does look pretty nasty today. Primary risk is for flooding. But there is the risk of severe wind damage and lightning. People may be seeing some chatter about the risk of tornadoes. This isn't an especially unusual risk for the UK in scenarios such as todays. The probability of one or two occurring is low. If they do, the area affected would be very localised. Obviously really horrible for anyone who is affected, but it's not a risk that people should fret about. With a yellow wind warning, people should be 'high wind' aware anyway.

Colder is ok. But our ground is already saturated. Urgh.

countrygirl99 · 22/02/2024 11:03

So cold and wet instead of mild and wet. Lovely.

JaneIves · 22/02/2024 12:29

I'm so sick of this rain (SE)
It feels like it's rained non stop for months. My garden is a literal bog.
