As we’re a few weeks away from the start of meteorological Winter (1st December), some weather websites have some thoughts on what the weather might have in store for us over the next few months.

The Weather Outlook started very early, in September Xmas Shock but October's thoughts are here ~ The Weather Outlook.
And Netweather’s thoughts are here.

GloriaSmud · 05/01/2024 19:16

OYBBK ~ Grin I fear for their blood pressure sometimes!

RafaistheKingofClay ~ I've just been outside and it looks like it's drizzling here (Leicester)

Tipping down here earlier very cold too.

Desecratedcoconut · 06/01/2024 08:30

Dry and cold here in my patch of the n.e, we have dodged the majority of this shitty weather, the rain has just been typical and no disruptive wind. I'm grateful for uneventful weather. Hope everyone who has been copping the worst of it is doing okay.

GloriaSmud · 06/01/2024 10:59

Muddy here (Leicester), just very, very muddy. Just been for a dog walk. Dry socks were needed afterwards and I'm sticking to 'proper' paths/pavements until things dry out!

A Cold Weather Alert has been issued for the next few days. (the map doesn't seem to work in Firefox but is ok in Chrome Confused )

Cold weather alerts updated in clumsy link above.

Remember these are issued to alert healthcare and local authorities so that they can put action plans in place, like getting in more staff (haha) and opening up shelters. They aren't issued just to let people know that it's going to be a bit cold.

Freezing fog here this morning. Jakers it's 🥶

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/01/2024 08:39

oh yuck justasking.

justasking111 · 17/01/2024 12:01

It will be Sunday for us. The silver lining being that the winds swinging to a southerly so it will be warmer if they're correct.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/01/2024 16:44

It will absolutely be warmer justasking.

GloriaSmud · 18/01/2024 07:58

The long range metoffice forecast says there could be a drier/cold spell coming towards the end of this month (mainly for the south) but perhaps something colder for the whole country, start to mid February.

22nd-31st January
There is potential for strong winds to be across the country at first on Monday, especially in the north at first, but it will be much milder. Rain is also likely at first although potentially becoming drier for a time in the south. The milder than normal conditions seem most likely to persist through to the end January, with the greatest chance of unsettled conditions likely to be focussed across the north and northwest. Hovever, in the the south and southeast some drier and more settled spells of weather are likely to develop, especially later in the month, when, although quite likely milder than of late, the chance of overnight frost and fog increases once again.

1st-15th February
Into early February there is an increased likelihood of high pressure having greater influence on UK weather patterns. There is uncertainty in exactly where high pressure will become established but this increases the likelihood of drier conditions. There is also a greater than normal likelihood of winds from the east leading to an increased chance, compared to normal, of cold spells. Whilst a drier and colder scenario is most likely during early February, there remains a chance of some milder interludes with spells of rain and strong winds, especially across the north.

GloriaSmud · 24/01/2024 18:31

@justasking111 ~ looks like it! Could be a chilly month but hopefully we can all dry out a bit.

Today was perfect weather for drying laundry here, I even got jeans dry on the line. Making the most of a dry, warm, breezy day as we don't get that many in winter.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/01/2024 07:37

Tonight could see a fairly lively squall line pass over Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Midlands up. This would bring a short lived spell of squally gusts and heavy rain. The risk of this is less over southern England, though there will still be a short spell of moderate-heavy rain.

GloriaSmud · 25/01/2024 08:24

Thoughts from The Weather Outlook on the next few days.

Metoffice long range forecast ~ possibly something colder on the way....
29th January - 7th February
Cloud and outbreaks of rain gradually move northwards across the UK during Monday, heaviest in some western and northern areas with some southern parts dry. Through the remainder of the period, changeable with spells of rain at times, but also some drier, brighter interludes. The heaviest and most frequent rain will tend to be across northwestern areas and accompanied by periods of strong winds. Further south and east settled periods are likely to be more prevalent, with the best of any sunshine and drier weather here. Temperatures are expected to be milder than average overall, although this doesn't preclude shorter, colder spells at times, with a risk of overnight frost and fog accompanying more settled conditions.

8th February - 22nd February
Through the middle of February, changeable conditions are most likely with the wettest and windiest conditions in the north and northwest. It is likely to be drier further southeast, although some wet and windy spells are still possible here. Later in the month there is an increasing likelihood of winds from the north or east, which will increase the chance of some colder spells and perhaps snow.

Wet weather spreading northeastwards

Wet weather pushes northeastwards today, with the heaviest outbreaks of rain generally in the north and west

I wish I had seen this warning earlier. Got a huge fright when this just hit us on west Scotland coast . Watch out everyone it's nasty in how sudden and intense the impact is.

justasking111 · 26/01/2024 00:25

Windy here again sigh...

EmmaEmerald · 26/01/2024 05:16

Strong gusty wind and also, rain, have woken me up, quite bad. In Essex.

I saw the odd period of gusty winds on the hourly forecast but no forecast I saw said rain.

beenrumbled · 26/01/2024 06:34

@OhYouBadBadKitten I think the squall line passed through my neck of the woods in Tameside just after 3am this morning.

We were woken suddenly by all the open doors in the house slamming shut, our bedroom window rattled like mad in the frame and it looked and sounded like a high pressure hosepipe had been turned on against the glass.

Cats 1 & 2 legged it under the bed and the kitten went berserk and did the wall of death round the bedroom.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/01/2024 07:43

You know my thoughts on app forecasts @EmmaEmerald .

That sounds exactly right beenrumbled. It sounds dramatic!
