Spring Weather watch

Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

This BBC News article is quite informative about El Niño:

What are El Niño and La Niña, and how do they change the weather? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-64192508

justasking111 · 12/06/2023 09:25

As a family of sailors living in Wales el nino has meant wetter summers in the distant past. But not for the last 15 years or so. But reading the BBC article was very interesting when you consider the tree rings.

We had another thunderstorm last night which, like the one on Saturday night, delivered about half an inch of rain. Very glad of that.

There was a sound that I haven't heard during a thunderstorm before and it sounded like plastic sheeting being vigorously shaken. Anyone know the explanation? @OhYouBadBadKitten perhaps?

InMySpareTime · 12/06/2023 10:05

Jealous of everyone's storms, I haven't seen any rain at all since 19th May.
I'm used to being the last place for snow but I can usually count on rain!
Was promised storms the last two days and rain today but they all seem to evaporate on approach.

The heating in the north atlantic is extremely alarming. It isn't El Nino. It is unprecedented in recorded history. I was thinking about starting a separate thread about it. Look at the anomaly graph.

Kitten, I couldn't say for sure, but it didn't sound like hail. It wasn't quite like anything I've ever heard before.

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/06/2023 10:23

That's some anomaly! I'd be interested in a thread if you make one.

Cantonet · 12/06/2023 10:39

@OhYouBadBadKitten that graph looks extremely worrying.

Yes that would be interesting.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/06/2023 10:55

Another question Tri. Did you look outside at the time?

OP posts:
Tricyrtis2022 · 12/06/2023 10:55

Kitten, the was a great deal of electrical activity at the time with multiple lightning strikes at once. It was very impressive.

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/06/2023 10:57

Did you look outside at the time?

Only in the vague direction of outside, Kitten, I wasn't actively looking, just facing the window.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/06/2023 12:19

I wonder if it was St Elmo's fire then. Or something along those same lines. Some induced electrical phenomenon.

Trust @OhYouBadBadKitten to find the graph :) will check out the new thread, thank you!¡

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/06/2023 12:52

No problem!

Coming back to local issues. For those who've not had rain over the past few days and who dont get any today. I don't really see when or where the next chance of rain is really coming from. There will probably be further thunderstorm outbreaks. But not likely in the next few days. If you need rain, you had best get your best dancing clobber on and get grooving in the garden this afternoon.

@OhYouBadBadKitten St Elmo's fire could be the answer. Next door have some scaffolding up and that's the direction the sound came from. I didn't see the blue flame as there were also a lot of lightning strikes occurring when it happened.

Might be too hot to dance but I'll try !

Was promised rain...it did not come.

EmmaEmerald · 12/06/2023 15:51

Anyone else singing St Elmo's Fire? 😂

I thought it was going to chuck down when I did my errands at lunchtime but it didn't.

this flat is so much easier to deal with than my old one - am north facing now.

Very short sharp shower/hail West Gloucestershire at least the temps dropped by 5 degrees, smells really fresh.Victoria's

KeziaOAP · 12/06/2023 16:37

Don't know how Victoria's crept in there at end of post🤔

InMySpareTime · 12/06/2023 16:37

Rain dance hasn't worked, the met office app has evaporated the 30% chance of rain this evening and the sky is blue.
My garden is essentially dust now.

countrygirl99 · 12/06/2023 16:47

This morning we were forecast thunder storms around lunchtime and they have been slipping later all day and have now disappeared off the app. I've given up and watered the garden.
