Thunderstorm warning Saturday 10th June.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/06/2023 11:00

Some areas could see the late spring drought break dramatically on Saturday. Thunderstorms could bring torrential rain, with associated surface flash flooding. Other hazards include hail, lightning and high winds.

A big caveat for those in the warning area though. Many areas may well stay dry. We cannot forecast the exact location of thunderstorms and heavy rain. The risk that they will occur in a region can be flagged, but not exactly where they will crop up.

So, if you are planning an event, stay weather aware and be prepared to change plans as needed.

On Sunday, the risk of storms continues, but perhaps not quite as high as Sunday and I think the risk area will shift more eastwards and perhaps northwards.

Checking in, thanks as ever OYBBK

You're welcome Tokyo. I'm hoping for a bit of storm action. Grin Though I don't fancy flash flooding especially.

Also checking in - could do with some much-needed rain at the allotment!

SunnyEgg · 08/06/2023 11:11

I would love some rain, hopefully we get some here

hoochycrone · 08/06/2023 11:15

Thanks OYBBK 🥰 the garden could do with it. But flash flooding is bad.

bookworm14 · 08/06/2023 11:20

I hope we get storms in London - feels as though it hasn’t rained for weeks!

ChessieFL · 08/06/2023 11:22

We’re going camping this weekend right in the middle of the yellow area so hopefully ours will be one of the bits that stays dry!

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2023 11:38

checking in. Thanks OYBBK.

You are right, it hasn't! It was mid May when it last rained.

I'd like to order 10mm of rain, preferably in a couple of gentle batches, so the first can wet the ground and the second can soak in.
Though I'm not sure that would be enough to fill my waterbutts, so I'd like the same again on Sunday.

I'm a bit leery of June weather and flooding n Wales suffered so badly towns and villages flooded in the nineties. Husband a sailor with a dinghy was rescuing people in Llandudno. They contact all the sailing clubs begging for help. The water was a mix of rain and sewage. He had to strip naked on the patio have a long hot shower while I dealt with the contamination on his clothing.

People were homeless for many months. I still get twitchy when we get torrential rain on parched ground

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 08/06/2023 13:07

Checking in, thank you OYBBK.

CurlewKate · 08/06/2023 13:10

Might just get something here in Kent. Exciting! Mixed feelings thought-it will be the first storm since our babies grew up and our thunder-terrified dog died....

CosmosQueen · 08/06/2023 13:16

We live on a ridge of higher ground and, infuriatingly, frequently watch storms split and go either side of us 🤬
My garden’s very stoney and free draining so desperately need rain!

Me too! Fingers crossed 🤞

I can understand your feelings with regards to this. That is the sort of event that will always live in your memory.

It's still looking very lively for some for Saturday especially, but with the risk lingering into Monday or Tuesday.

Son doing his DofE hike and I’m organising a massive youth camp in Dorset/Poole. If it could just wait until Sunday afternoon. I love a storm!

Florissant · 08/06/2023 21:34

Thank you for the update, OYBK.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/06/2023 21:58

You're welcome.

It is rather well timed (not) for weekend outdoor activities. Hopefully no one will need this lightning advice, but everyone should know it. If you are caught out in the open in a thunderstorm, the only safe and sensible action is to seek shelter.

Flying into Manchester Saturday Pm, bit of a nervous flyer… what’s the risk of flying through a big storm please?

Seeleyboo · 08/06/2023 22:09

I love a good storm and recently returned from a woodland break with massive rolling storms. Sadly, though, my 6 year old is so terrified of storms she shakes.

nannynick · 08/06/2023 22:13

@justasking111 There is video online of June 1993 flooding in Llandudno, with water flowing down the tramway off Great Orme.

Flooding is not nice. I was in Ballater in 2015 when there was river flooding (due to large amounts of snow melt, plus Storm Frank).

Veryfishy · 08/06/2023 22:20

We’ve not had rain since May 8th ( in Wales , though not your area @justasking111 )

the farmers are definitely making hay / silage while the sun shines at the moment 🌞but the ground is rock hard and our river is prone to flooding

I do like a good old downpour though

Thankfully very little indeed Smile It might get a bit bumpy. Planes are designed to cope with lightning strikes, so even if you were incredibly unlucky, nothing bad would happen.

I've flown close to fairly severe storms and they were beautiful. Just a little up and down with the less settled air.

Following. I'm in Sussex.

I've been enjoying the recent dry sunny weather (after it rained non stop for what felt like four solid months until early may). But I do like a good storm.
