Optimistically we turn our eyes towards Spring weather in the hope that we are in the last throes of winter. But March is a capricious month. ...

It looks like we've a fairly unsettled couple of weeks coming up overall, with plenty of showers and rain. I'm afraid wintry showers are still likely over northern hills for a time yet.

Water storage will be grateful for the rain and at least there's a chance of spectacular cumulus cloudscapes on showery days (as opposed to these grey gloomy days which frankly can sod off)

Currently 11 degrees and grey cloud here in South Yorkshire.

justasking111 · 06/06/2023 13:36

Burnt off here now. Was cloudy this morning. SW storms moving in Saturday. We'll not see it till Sunday.

Surfers champing at the bit no big waves forecast

Delatron · 06/06/2023 17:30

It makes such a huge difference whether the cloud burns off or not. Was forecast to burn off in Bucks this afternoon but didn’t. So jumper has stayed on. It’s so hard to trust the forecasts but I’ll be happy when it warms up and the wind changes direction. The mornings are very cold.

Cookerhood · 06/06/2023 20:26

I'm cold! Sitting under a blanket watching the French open on TV.

Hedjwitch · 06/06/2023 21:32

Overcast with a cool breeze in Moray/Aberdeenshire today, but managed a quick dip in the sea anyway.

Delatron · 07/06/2023 07:22

Bright sunshine forecast on every weather site for this morning - yet again waking to dull cloud. Not sure why they are finding it so hard to get it right!

TheOnlyMrsW · 07/06/2023 07:47

@Delatron I really struggle with the different sites and forecasts - where we're going for the weekend has 3 different forecasts for the amount of rain likely on Saturday and Sunday - between 20% and 90%! Bearing in mind the car is being packed tonight and minimal shopping options in a field I could do with knowing if I need wellies 🤣

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2023 07:57

I'm afraid that online forecasts and apps can't tell you how much rain you are likely to get in this situation. The nature of thundery showers is that predicting exactly where and when they are going to pop up is not yet possible. The met office describe it as trying to predict where bubbles will pop up in a boiling pan.

Models are really struggling with the cloud this week though! We have a NE wind, bringing cloud in off the north sea and I'm guessing that they seem to be struggling in forecasting how deep this cloud is and therefore how quickly it will burn back.

I've got my electric blanket on this morning. It does look as though it will brighten up later though (SW)

Knackeredhamster · 07/06/2023 08:02

I'm in South Devon and yes lovely sunshine but my goodness that easterly wind swirling around has made it so cold.

When will we get some southerly wind. It's cold. I see people in sandals and flipflops and I'm still in socks and trainers albeit a bit warm!

Yes it’s getting impossible to plan anything! I’m also going away this weekend. Every forecast is different - no idea what to pack or wear. I’m going on the train so can’t take lots either!

Manchester's dry spell continues:

Spring Weather watch
OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/06/2023 09:12

Knackeredhamster it will be much warmer by Friday as the wind swings round.

I don't think we can complain too much about the unpredictability recently. The only question has been is: whether and when the cloud will burn back for those affected. It has been a remarkably long dry spell. If you look at the UK as a whole, rather than at region level, then this is close to a record breaking length of no rain.

Central southern areas could see some torrential downpours on Saturday. This risk moves more eastwards and northwards on Sunday. Of course, as discussed, even in those regions, not everywhere will see rain and this is not an exclusionist forecast!

We could definitely do with a bit of rain for the gardens. I’d prefer warmer, sunshine and the odd shower!

It’s just so cold when the cloud lingers all day (and the forecast has promised wall to wall sun).

justasking111 · 07/06/2023 09:59

Cloudy in N Wales this morning but I think it will burn off again. The nights are still cool which is bliss. We do need rain but thunder showers coming down in torrents are going to batter plant life including crops which isn't good

The UKHSA and Met Office have revamped the Heat Health alerts. Remember that these are primarily aimed at local authorities, the NHS and the care sector.

The first yellow alert of the year has been issued today for this weekend. Impacts only expected for those most vulnerable to heat exposure.

@OhYouBadBadKitten not a mention of Wales, Scotland or Ireland. Does that mean we don't need a warning?

I don't think you need one (we don't in N England)

It is a service that only covers England, but I don't think you'd need one anyway this time round.

it has been so cold in South Yorks for the past 2 days! I've gone back to winter pjs and have been huddled under blankets on the sofa. It was apparently down to 4.5 degrees according the my greenhouse thermomemeter the night before last! Havent seen any sign of sun for a good few days. Seems so odd to be reading about warnings of a heatwave at the weekend when Im sat shivering in my woloy jumper!!

RampantIvy · 08/06/2023 08:45

It's been awful @allsogreen hasn't it. Our heating has been coming on because it has been so cold.

I often potter in the garden in the evening deadheading flowers or trying back plants, but this year everything is so behind, and I'm wearing a coat.

The peonies haven't flowered yet, and we have clematis Montana still in flower. It has been unremittingly grey, cold and dry. The nicest day we have had so far was the late spring bank holiday Saturday, which was glorious. We sat in the sun at Sheffield food festival.

LittleFreakJezebel · 08/06/2023 08:48

I can't believe the NW still seems to have been getting the best of the weather! The mornings have been cloudier and cooler this week but still always lovely by mid afternoon, it feels very strange to be the ones with the good weather for once.

Delatron · 08/06/2023 09:30

I guess it’s so unusual for us to have a prevailing NE wind. It’s normally the opposite.

Cleared up a bit quicker down here in Bucks this morning. Hopefully it will too in the NE.
