This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

@HalfShrunkMoreToGo

Don't think I've ever seen a forecast for Leicester with 69mph gusts. We usually top out in the high 40s.

I thought that for Derbyshire! Usually around 40-45 in high winds.

MermaidEyes · 16/02/2022 16:11

@CraftyYankee

Supposed to be flying out of Heathrow Saturday 🙈

If the wind's behind you you'll arrive at your destination before you've even left 😆

Maireas · 16/02/2022 16:15

Thank you for this, @OhYouBadBadKitten (and others. You're right about the winds.
I think you're right about coastal areas.
Anyone got further updates, or a probable model?.

Maireas · 16/02/2022 17:05

Better news, @Polkadotties! Still severe, though.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2022 17:14

That is a single run of one model, we need a trend. I'll finish work in a couple of hours, then I'll update.

Biking to work Friday over a couple of exposed bridges. This should be interesting.

You'll need some ballast!
whataboutbob · 16/02/2022 17:42

I am due to drive from London to east Kent and back on Friday. I’m not a very experienced driver although I have done this run lots of times. Is there any way of checking the route is clear before I set off ? One stretch is on quite a tree- lined A road. Thanks for any tips.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 16/02/2022 18:09

@whataboutbob listen to local bbc radio and check the local council twitter (highways dept) and local police twitter.

nannynick · 16/02/2022 18:17

@whataboutbob Waze app may be of help but it relies on local people reporting damage and local drivers using the app whilst driving so it knows the speeds that others are doing.

Anyone down the coast, please, for the love of all you find holy, be careful.

This is the surf forecast for Sennen Cove. 105kmph winds, 11 metre waves and 61 THOUSAND kilojoules of energy in those waves. That's like being hit by a double decker bus.

Storm Eunice
Rowgtfc72 · 16/02/2022 18:47

@Maireas I am possibly ballast enough!🤣
Joking aside, having been swept across two lanes of the dual carriageway before, I tend to get off and walk those bits.

Goodness, that's terrifying. Take care!

I live not too far from there. Back in 2014 the waves hitting the cliffs actually measured on the Richter scale!
LadyFlumpalot · 16/02/2022 18:58

@HesterShaw1 I think we "met" on a thread in 2019 when I was staying in Cape Cornwall and there was a storm Grin

I'll admit, I'm bloody jealous. I love a storm and wild seas. If I wasn't all the way in Somerset I'd be there to just see the sheer power of it. Safely, of course!

I've seen the photos of Sennen in 2014. Awe inspiring.

HesterShaw1 · 16/02/2022 18:59

One of my favourite places, Cape Cornwall!

It's my happy place, we stayed in the cottage by the carpark for the Cape. I could have stayed there forever. The year before we stayed in Wheal Call cottage, the little whitewashed one hanging off the edge of the cliff.
GreenFingeredNell15 · 16/02/2022 19:02

Winds always freak me out

ClariceQuiff · 16/02/2022 19:02

Sennen Cove is a favourite holiday place for us - hoping everyone in that region stays safe.

CatBook · 16/02/2022 19:09

Thanks OYBBK and everyone else for the updates and advice. We are staying on the north coast of Cornwall right by the sea, and DP is laughing at me stocking up on candles and batteries as well as planning to take all of the outdoor furniture in tomorrow. It's a bit wild out tonight with the waves at high tide, dread to think what the early hours of Friday will bring.

Be careful. Definitely bring in the furniture. Take lots of photos. Enjoy!
CatBook · 16/02/2022 19:19

@LadyFlumpalot - definitely staying safe! We are staying in all day on Friday, and will just have to pray that the flat roof doesn't peel off like it did a few years ago in a big storm! I just hope that other people heed the warnings - I've been so scared before watching people dodging the waves right down by the rocks during the rough weather.
