Storm Eunice

This thread covers the expected severe weather on Friday - named Storm Eunice by the met office. At the moment there is great uncertainty, so the met office have put out a very wide yellow weather warning. It looks likely that some regions within the warning area will see gusts of 60-70mph inland, with a small chances of inland gusts above 80mph. The storm also carries the potential for some blizzards, but again there is currently considerable uncertainty.

A separate thread exists for Storm Dudley which is expected Wednesday/Thursday.

Pahh it's my birthday on Friday. We usually have snow or trip to the seaside if none. Doesn't look likely this week!. Hoping South Yorks and the east coast avoids the brunt. Stay safe and thank you OYBBK.

Crackersmum · 16/02/2022 13:01

Thank you for this expert information.
It seems we are having more and more of these terrifying storms. I’m no expert but they definitely seem to be increasing in frequency.
My husband has to travel to work along the M4 , he works in the steel works in Port Talbot. There’s a stretch of the M4 there that is very open and the wind can be a problem even on normal weather days. He’ll be travelling along that part of the M4 just when the wind is at its strongest on Friday. I can’t imagine his employee telling him and his team to take the night off as it’s unsafe. It’s very worrying!

Crackersmum · 16/02/2022 13:02

Sorry should’ve proof read my post - employer not employee.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2022 13:09

I'm neglecting the snow side, purely from lack of time, but this is whtat the met office are saying. "Although Storm Eunice’s strongest winds will be on its southern edge, the northern flank of the system brings the potential for some snow to northern areas. A yellow warning for wind and snow has been issued covering Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland, where potentially up to 20cm of snow could accumulate over high ground, with up to 5cm possible in some lower areas. Brisk winds in this area could cause blizzard-like conditions and drifting of lying snow, reducing visibility, and making driving conditions difficult. "

Will schools close if there is a red warning? DS attends a hilltop school in a tree-heavy park in Bristol area....

BlackeyedSusan · 16/02/2022 13:28

One would hope Mo...

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/02/2022 13:33

Living very close to the Bristol Channel I’m interested. Very very blowy here. Warm as well. Washing drying nicely…

MondeoFan · 16/02/2022 13:35

Anyone think it'll come as far down as Essex?
We were meant to be on a road trip on Friday travelling from Essex to Norwich to an outdoor event? What do you think? Should I cancel?

jazzandh · 16/02/2022 13:38

@MondeoFan personally I would cancel - yes!

MondeoFan · 16/02/2022 13:48

@jazzandh thanks. Think I'll have to. Kids will be gutted but safety has to come first

GnomeyGnome · 16/02/2022 14:15

Just seen the amber warning pop up on my phone, we're on the very outskirt of London, on the Surrey border. Was meant to be taking DC to an indoor activity centre 15 minutes away by bus on Friday. Is this something I'd need to think about cancelling do people think or is that being over cautious?

BlackeyedSusan · 16/02/2022 14:20

How confident are you about not getting hit by a roof tile?

CraftyYankee · 16/02/2022 14:25

Supposed to be flying out of Heathrow Saturday 🙈

LowlandLucky · 16/02/2022 14:33

Dudley is building up here now, high tide peaked just before noon thankfully. Fire's are blazing, generator is on standby and dinner is ready in the the slow cooker so Dudley can blow as much as it likes.

MedusasBadHairDay · 16/02/2022 14:35

We're in the SE and it's pretty windy here already, can just hear things crashing about outside. Friday is going to be something else isn't it? 🙈

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2022 14:52

Dudley thread ---> www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weather/4481213-Storm-Dudley

In the south today is absolutely nothing compared to Friday.

Gnomey - keep an eye on TFL, they may need to suspend bus services I guess.

Norwich will probably see some pretty strong winds - somewhere in the range of 60-85mph depending on the exact track.

Listening to the Met Office twitter space, they are reiterating the uncertainty of the track and that wind speeds could vary by +-10mph the track could vary by +-50 miles which could also bring people in our out of the severest winds.

I had a random day-long power outage a few weeks ago in North Dorset - this time I shall be a bit more prepared if the power goes down - fill flasks with boiling water in the morning, try to eat something warm whenever I can (electric oven/hob here) - not rely on local takeaway if no electricity as they are likely to be affected too! It’s probably not a great idea to go about driving for food either during an amber warning…

Definitely remember to charge power banks and keep things charged as much as possible.

I thought I’d be ok with oil heating, but the pump uses electric… shouldn’t be too cold (I hope)

It gets very dark quite early at this time of year still, trying to occupy my pre schooler in the dark (with a few battery operated candles, and real candles in the safest place I could put them!) was a bit of a challenge!

Celestiel · 16/02/2022 15:02

Forgot to add - we’ve already been sent a message by our electricity company warning of potential outages…

AFingerofFudge · 16/02/2022 15:06

@OhYouBadBadKitten thanks as always for the weather threads.
DS2 is on a road trip visiting unis! He drove up from Gloucestershire last night to Lancaster. Tonight he is driving to York, tomorrow to the Peak District (no unis there but a stop gap!) before going to a friend at Warwick Uni and home Friday night. Bit worried about him driving as he's so inexperienced- any thoughts? Should he perhaps come home Thursday night to escape the worst on Friday??

HesterShaw1 · 16/02/2022 15:32

Hi all I haven't posted here for a few years.

But as a sea person, can I just add the danger from high tides and storm surges on Friday? We have quite a big spring tide so there will be overtopping of harbour walls and sea walls etc. If you live in a coastal town or village you might want to think about moving valuable stuff upstairs.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/02/2022 15:38

Absolutely Hester

This looks especially bad up the north Cornwall coast and Bristol Channel coasts

loveliesbleeding1 · 16/02/2022 15:41

I’m in Buckinghamshire and I’m starting to get very worried about Friday, stay safe everyone.

HesterShaw1 · 16/02/2022 15:43

Think it looks worse up Western coasts @loveliesbleeding1. But I guess Bucks is quite wooded is it?

loveliesbleeding1 · 16/02/2022 16:02

Hestershaw yes,we are surrounded by huge, well established trees, which makes me worried and also we have no car at the moment so DH has been cycling into town for work,I think a taxi both there and home on Friday might be a good idea!
