Yes freaked out - 15 degrees today apparently here.

Muminabun · 01/01/2022 19:38

It’s going to be freezing and pissing down for the next week so don’t get too freaked out.

dinahsdishes · 01/01/2022 19:38

@christmas1988 where are you that it's freezing? Not in the UK?

100problems · 01/01/2022 19:38

I heard on the radio it's caused by warm winds from the Azores. There was an instance in 1916 when it was 15.6. before anyone accuses me of being a global warming naysayer, I'm not, I'm just highlighting it's unusual but not without precedent.

MarshaBradyo · 01/01/2022 19:39

It is quite warm and feels a bit odd

It is about to get colder again I think

I remember winter before pandemic began was so mild the roses kept growing all way through

KCee30 · 01/01/2022 19:40

I was bloody sweating being out in a roll neck sweater yesterday with no coat. Today hasn't been quite so muggy where I live. I was quite cold this morning!

Meant to be going cold soon isn't it?

JohnStonesMissus · 01/01/2022 19:40

@LadyDanburysCane

What I find truly weird is the people who think this unseasonably warm weather is a good thing!

I was out walking today and whilst waiting to cross a road someone turned to me and said “isn’t this weather wonderful? I hope it stays like this for the rest of winter”!

It’s NOT wonderful! It’s pleasant to go out in but it’s not how it should be.

Exactly this, I like seasons to be in their proper place, for some reason mild winters are seen as a good thing but it's really really not.
InglouriousBasterd · 01/01/2022 19:41

It does feel weird but on the news earlier they said it was the hottest NYD for 100 years - so 100 years ago they also had nearly 16 degrees in London too. Not denying climate change by any stretch, but reassuring to know there has always been odd weather too.

100problems · 01/01/2022 19:41

@Whatabambam yes, that's happening here right now. I'm having a glass of wine outside and can hear birdsong.

elbea · 01/01/2022 19:41

The explanation is that winds are being drawn up from the Azores due to low pressure off of Ireland. Its the position of the jet stream paired with low pressure, it’s nothing to get frantic about.

Silverswirl · 01/01/2022 19:41

It was warm but there have been plenty of other December or January days like this in the past.
A memory came up from 5 years ago of December the 28th - my young kids were in just jumpers no coats or anything roller skating / cycling in the park

I thought it was hottest since records began?
SpindleSpangle · 01/01/2022 19:42

I've definietly seen a weather forecast on mainstream tv for colder weather to come - probably just after the ecosystem has got thoroughly misdirected.

GreetingsFromVenus · 01/01/2022 19:44

This planet has been heating up and cooling down again for millennia.

I can remember the Christmas Day 20 years ago when I was heavily pregnant with my twins and it was sunny and so warm when we went for a walk. everyone was in thin tops.

CouldThisReallyBe · 01/01/2022 19:47

Yes I've slept with the fan on for the last two nights (nothing to do with being peri Hmm)

Flowersandthings · 01/01/2022 19:47

Temperatures were close to this in 1916 according to the BBC! It’ll be cold again on Tuesday.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 01/01/2022 19:51

I saw a woodpigeon gathering nesting materials this morning, and a toad and a bat whilst walking this evening. The predicted colder weather next week will probably put a stop to the woodpigeon's nesting very soon, but I am worried about toads and bats that are out now, as they should be hibernating at this time of year. There isn't enough food for them at the moment.

Benjispruce5 · 01/01/2022 19:51

Not that warm here in U.K.. I still walked the dog in a jumper and coat albeit in done. I’m central.

Benjispruce5 · 01/01/2022 19:51

Ellowyn · 01/01/2022 19:51

Last night it was -20F here, that is minus - 29C. That's about normal for winter here but on December the 1st it was 64F (18C) which was freaky. I think that warm spot has now reached the UK - which is the way it seems to go. Just look out for very cold temps in a few weeks.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 01/01/2022 19:53

@Tittyfilarious81

Not concerned really I'm quite glad I've not had to put the heating on for a couple of days
🤦‍♀️
Eggshausted · 01/01/2022 19:53

I’m hacked off I wrapped all my banana trees in December to protect them from frost. It will be doing them no good trying to burst out of the fleece with this heat!

@Ellowyn where are you?
