It honestly gives me anxiety

What I find even weirder...

Last night, early in a very old but pokey restaurant with tables crammed in, I asked for a window to be open. I was sweltering and someone said they would need to put their coat on, even if it was opened then closed.

It was a blamy night and they resistance I got was barmy.

JohnStonesMissus · 01/01/2022 19:29

I don't think it's that unusual to be honest, I can remember topsy turvy weather going back years...MIL said it was snowing just after DH was born in June back in the early seventies, I've seen the photos of a newborn DH and MIL leaving the hospital and it is snowing so she's not making it up, it's going to get cold again pretty soon so make the most of it..

CaMePlaitPas · 01/01/2022 19:30

Buckle up, 2022 is going to be a hell of a ride.

Newyearoldyou · 01/01/2022 19:30
  • sorry I didn't mention the window was open for covid reasons not heat.
StellaGibson118 · 01/01/2022 19:30

@chooseyourusername

sorry but I think if that is all you have to worry about you are doing fine
You can have more than one concern at a time. HTH

‘Why on Earth are people 'freaking out'?

We live on a living planet, temperatures change. Nothing to feel 'weird' or 'freaked out' by.’

My MIL is like this - because she’s scared. Scared of what’s to come and overwhelmed by the fact it seems we are powerless.
She swings between - it’s all fine, natural and oh, the scientists will come up solutions.
She drives a SUV, barely recycles, drinks bottled
Water only, Refuses to use re-usable bags for grocery shopping…
In my experience the people who deny climate change are actually just overwhelmed and scared

DillDanding · 01/01/2022 19:31

Our spring bulbs are poking their green shoots up - but tbh, that always happens at this time of year.

IcedCoffeeMilkshake · 01/01/2022 19:32

My ASD DS who is not great at identifying when he is cold or warm wandered into the sitting room earlier with his great big supersoft fleecy hoodie on and said; 'Mum I'm all sweaty'.

SparkleWhale · 01/01/2022 19:32

It's really strange and I don't like it. Not that I don't love my gas bill being so low but it's so strange for winter and indicative of major global weather changes and that's not ideal.

IhaveaBigBum · 01/01/2022 19:33

The birds have been singing all through the night the last few nights... like they do in spring and summer. I feel like the temp rise has them confused.

Pinkflipflop85 · 01/01/2022 19:33

@Georgyporky

Was the person in shorts a postman? In my area, postmen (not women) seem to wear shorts all-year-round. I don't think Royal Mail give them long trousers.
They do...they are just very uncomfortable and not at all suitable for the nature of the job!

Some of us just don't care 🤷🏻‍♀️

Whatabambam · 01/01/2022 19:34

It's the birds tweeting in the dark that concerns me as much as the unseasonably warm weather

HesterShaw1 · 01/01/2022 19:35

Well the explanation is the airflow. It's coming from the Canaries.

It always drags up a load of moisture too, so often in the south west for example, it means it's mild and really miserable.

Does look colder this week

LadyDanburysCane · 01/01/2022 19:35

What I find truly weird is the people who think this unseasonably warm weather is a good thing!

I was out walking today and whilst waiting to cross a road someone turned to me and said “isn’t this weather wonderful? I hope it stays like this for the rest of winter”!

It’s NOT wonderful! It’s pleasant to go out in but it’s not how it should be.

Tittyfilarious81 · 01/01/2022 19:35

Not concerned really I'm quite glad I've not had to put the heating on for a couple of days

Joystir59 · 01/01/2022 19:36

Went sea swimming North Sea no wetsuit and hardly needed to layer up afterwards. Very warm!

BarkminsterBlue · 01/01/2022 19:36

December 2015 was incredibly mild - regularly 14-16°C throughout the month. It was something to do with El Niño IIRC. Then January 2016 was freezing and we had quite a bit of snow. Everyone seems to have forgotten about this in freaking out over today.

HesterShaw1 · 01/01/2022 19:36

@CaMePlaitPas

I don't think comments like this are at all helpful. You sound almost gleeful.
MyMoneyIsAllSpent · 01/01/2022 19:36

I wouldn't worry too much. My son was born late January '89 and while I was at home, heavily pregnant, I spent many days sitting in the garden, in the sun, wearing a sleeveless T Shirt.

RaininSummer · 01/01/2022 19:36

Must depend where you live. Did go to a beach today with the dog and nobody was coatless. I had a wooly hat, gloves and two jumpers.Anyone in the sea had a wet suit on.

Fritilleries · 01/01/2022 19:37

People's responses on this thread make me want to scream. This isn't normal!!!

BashfulClam · 01/01/2022 19:37

I remember a Christmas with weather like this when I was about 10. It was a Sunday, Santa had definitely been confirmed as not real…it didn’t feel like Christmas and not magical. I was outside playing with no coat or jacket.

orinocosfavoritecake · 01/01/2022 19:37

If you’re freaked out, write to your MP and ask them to ask the Chancellor to commit enough money to really deal with the climate crisis. Writing to your councillors to support the local LTN isn’t a bad idea either.

DroopyClematis · 01/01/2022 19:38

I recall my 17th birthday.
Stuck at Roscoff as ferries were stopped due to arctic weather.

Eventually managed to get a ferry.

Got picked up by a dear friend who happened to be staying near Plymouth.

Arrived to a freezing England. Drove up to Worcestershire and the whole land was white and snow laden as well as treacherously icy.

It was late April in 1981.
