Put it this way: my DS is six years old and if you asked me if I thought he had a good chance of reaching the age I am now (34) without living through a society collapse level climate event, I would say no.

Sux2Buthen · 01/01/2022 20:12

@MerryChristmas21

Why on Earth are people 'freaking out'?

We live on a living planet, temperatures change. Nothing to feel 'weird' or 'freaked out' by.

This is the kind of thing that stops me panicking, thank you. I get too invested in the statements on here and worry a lot
upanddownandroundandround · 01/01/2022 20:12

It's warm wind from Azores according to BBC...

Is anyone else freaked out
maddiemookins16mum · 01/01/2022 20:13

We went for a walk between 12-1, I ended up in just my t shirt.

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:13

This is the kind of thing that stops me panicking, thank you.

Yes, I'd also put my faith in a random poster on MN and not the thousands of climate scientists tearing their hair out pointing out the exact opposite.

upanddownandroundandround · 01/01/2022 20:13

Oh maybe a link is better:

New Year's Day is warmest on record in the UK, Met Office says www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-59847641

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 01/01/2022 20:13

But hey, all the climate scientists must be wrong, because Sally on mumsnet remembers that one time on Christmas day in 1974 it was also mild.

Both things can be true, though. We have always had mild winter days - that can be confirmed by looking back at the recorded temperatures. But that doesn't mean that climate change isn't also true.

HashtagShitShop · 01/01/2022 20:13

Yes, I've taken my heating off schedule cos it's just not needed at the moment.

I also went to the opticians yesterday in just a cardigan and t-shirt (and jeans obv haha!)

It's about 16 degrees here. I live beside the sea and our beach was absolutely rammed today with locals and daytrippers.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/01/2022 20:13

@MadameMinimes

Climate change is absolutely real but a warm winter day in the U.K. Is not, by itself, a sign of climate change. As the climate crisis worsens winters in the U.K. are almost certainly going to get significantly colder, not warmer, as the Gulf Stream continues to weaken. Next week it could be -10 degrees and it would not make climate change any less worth worrying about. Our winters are not going to get milder as the climate crisis worsens.
Indeed. It's long term averages that are an indicator of climate changes, I'm in my 50s, I've seen warm winter days, cold summer days and everything in between. It's not unusual.
Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:14

The hottest days on record have all happened in the last 5 years.

Echofallen · 01/01/2022 20:15

Yep. I've seen a few guys wearing shorts around here. And this morning I noticed that my apple tree has new leaves on it!

WorriedMillie · 01/01/2022 20:17

Car today (car is a bit dramatic, but it was 16 degrees here and car was parked in a nice sunny spot…)

Is anyone else freaked out
Sux2Buthen · 01/01/2022 20:17

@Dottydozet I didn't realise those scientists were on this thread.
I can live in perpetual panic if you'd rather?
Hmm

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:19

I can live in perpetual panic if you'd rather?

Everyone burying their heads in the sand is what will kill us in the end.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/01/2022 20:21

The hottest days on record have all happened in the last 5 years.

which feeds into the averages. Individual unseasonal weather is not uncommon regardless of global warming. I've had snow on my birthday in June as a child in the early 70s, not much but snow.

Sux2Buthen · 01/01/2022 20:22

@Dottydozet I don't think me panicking and wailing is going to solve climate change so if someone's comment helps me a bit and it doesn't affect you for me to feel a bit better maybe your input isn't needed 🤷🏻‍♀️
'Feeling better? Not on my watch'🙄

DrCoconut · 01/01/2022 20:24

The price of fuel has gone up. So has the temperature. Maybe it's whatever higher power you believe in/the universe aligning/something of that nature.

Twillow · 01/01/2022 20:24

It's not just the exceptional days

I repeat: The ten hottest years on record have all been this century,
with the hottest of these being the last five years.

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:24

The problem with thinking "oh it's all normal and will be fine/won't affect me" is that nothing changes. People continue in their lives as normal rather than mobilising and working for what change is still possible. We still have the ability to stop the most catastrophic effects of climate change. That's still within reach.

Inertia means we are fucked.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2022 20:24

Today was a record breaking high temperature for New Year's day. We are breaking records much more frequently than in the past due to climate change. What would have been a mild weather pattern anyway in the past is exacerbated by climate change.

bordermidgebite · 01/01/2022 20:26

You don't need to live in perpetual panic but if people carry on regardless they better not wind up on here complaining about flooded houses , child dying from heat stroke , rising prices , mass immagratipn

Or you could manage not to panic but to start voting/spending /acting in ways to limit climate change

So not panic nor denial

Jellykat · 01/01/2022 20:27

A few buds appearing in my garden which shouldnt be, i do worry for animals and plants..

georgarina · 01/01/2022 20:27

I know it's a scary topic and no need to 'panic and wail' but pretending nothing's happening isn't a solution either.

We've just had the warmest NYE on record. Temps reached unsurvivable levels last summer.

It stresses me out more when no one in my actual life will talk about it or acknowledge it

Dottydozet · 01/01/2022 20:28

IME denial actually IS panic. It's your fight or flight response - the flight part. Sticking fingers in ears.

The thought that wars over food, water and other resources loom in our immediate future is too terrifying to contemplate for most people so they prefer to pretend it isn't happening.

There are still things you can do. Vote for change. Protest. Educate your children. Tell them self sufficiency and resilience. They will need both.

Postdatedpandemic · 01/01/2022 20:29

Weather - today is warm

Climate - hmm looks like the planet is warming up - see pic
