A thread to share and celebrate success for those of us who don't know many fans of weight lifting in real life?

Today I added 5lb to my squat. Only had to do three, but could have managed more I reckon.

(Less said about my bench press the better).

Worked on snatches from 3 different positions. Finally think I have got the technique right ?? Only upto 16.5kg ....but I did break my elbow 11 weeks ago so very pleased with that!

I did legs today. Managed to increase my deadlifts to 50kg. Which I very happy with, since when i started I struggled with 15 kg.

Also, I dislocated a rib so have been off ab exercises for a while. But today they went much better and I added some weight into them so very happy.

Well done with the squat increase. My bench press is pretty poor too, I just keep looking back at where I was when I get disheartened. I found Chest flys a difficult one to master.

And well done brainwashed that's fantastic. Hope the elbow heals well. That must have really hurt. 16.5kg is impressive, so close to the injury.

Am going to a lifting class tonight, will try and remember to record my weights here as I always forget them! I know I deadlifted 30kg last week but my technique wasn't great, I had a bit of an achy back the next day.

My bench press is just comedy, my right arm is a good bit stronger than my left so the bar goes all wonky as I get near my max.

I had to roll the barbell off me at one point this morning

I was with my coach and trained legs got a pb on the leg press 15reps of 150kg I always wish afterwards I'd gone heavier. Dead lifts not in my program this month I smashed 80kg for 12reps the day they were taken out. Not trying to be a know all but you do realise the long bar weighs 20kg or were you using a small one that's used in classes ? Just trying to establish what equipment you use

Me? I am aware that there are two standard barbells. I use the long, 45lb one on the bench press and the shorter 35lb one on all other lifts.

I don't use the very short, light ones from, say, BodyPump.

I've never used those or do a poxy body pump class that's not for me someone up the thread said the used to struggle with 15kg deadlift I read it as. That's all and was tiring to say your probably lifting more than they thought that all. I'll butt out now then

little I know the larger barbell weighs 20kg. However this was a 15kg barbell. No idea the right term for it. When I say I had no muscle when I started. I had no muscle. I was a wreck. Even the lightest weights were difficult. That's why a 50kg deadlift, is amazing for me. Never thought i would get there. Anything over 15kg and my form when to crap.

brainwashed lol. I was the same dislocted my rib on a reclined leg press. Baffled everyone including my doctor. Still love doing them though hasn't put me off.

Oh and little 15 reps at 150kg is amazing. I hope to be able to do that one day. New goal!

I am a little disconcerted about these broken and dislocated bones. I thought my calluses were bad.

Unfortunately, injuries come with the territory. Same as any exercise or sport. That's why form is so important, though. To reduce the risk. I have had far less injuries in the last year, even though the weights are constantly going up. Mainly due to making sure my form is correct.

I never got why there were so many mirrors in gyms. Since doing weights I understand. It actually took a long time for me to be able to watch myself train. It was a real mental hurdle, but definitely worth overcoming.

Its not like the gym law that you must get injured.

But even the most seasoned athletes get injured. Even if its dropping a weight on your toe (seen this a few times) or trapping fingers when putting dumbbells back when not paying attention. Injury is risk in everyday life, so its no different. A pt at the gym managed to break her finger getting it caught in the handle of the fridge. Personally I have had a 2 that put me out for 6 weeks each. A dislocated rib and a shoulder injury that I have no idea how I did it. The rib was worse and it took a fall at work to pop it back. I am particularly dangerous on my feet

Keeping form correct will minimise the risk and (obviously) being careful. Just like you would outside the gym in everyday life. Anyone can pull their back doing the most mundane task or drop something on their toe. Its certainly not enough of a risk to put anyone off doing it.

Just take sensible precautions. You will be fine.

So you are now saying weight lifting is no more dangerous than using a kitchen then?

No I am saying its no more dangerous than most everyday tasks, if you take the right precautions.
