A thread to share and celebrate success for those of us who don't know many fans of weight lifting in real life?

So jealous of you ladies doing the Olympic lifts! I still haven't learnt them as a.) they are super technical and B.) husbabd reluctant to show me until I can comfortably strict press at least 35-40kg and build more explosive sttength. It's frustrating as when doing overhead squat for example I have to stick to 25kg as I can't wide arm grip any more than that to press it up for the overhead squat position. Do you ladies all have super upper body strength or did you just get stuck in to the snatch clean and jerk stuff anyway as a means to progress it? I've been watching them on the cross fit games online and they look bloody amazing!! X

MonkeysandParrots · 05/06/2015 22:33

Focussed on form/depth yesterday rather than going really heavy so pyramided on squats, 5x40, 5x45, 5x50, 5x55 and the back down again. PT said I'm consistently at 100% for my squat depth now which is good with an aim of making it to 120% over time. Have a dodgy shoulder so some light work with dumb bells and stretchy rope type things (no idea what they are called!) and a fair bit of cardio. Legs are aching today!

Vivacia · 06/06/2015 07:29

What do you class as 100% squat depth?

OP posts:
chiruri · 06/06/2015 08:41

I would have said anything below parallel is correct, but 'ass to grass' is 100%?
Boudicea - that's crazy that he won't teach you olympic lifts until your strict press reaches some arbitrary (and ridiculously high) number! My strict press 1RM is 37.5kg, which I thought was fairly good. Olympic lifts are technical rather than to do with pure strength. I agree that you should focus on areas of weakness with regards to mobility (ie squat technique or shoulder mobility) as they are really important with Olympic lifts, but pure upper body strength is less so. FGS the entire point of the technique of the lifts is to utilise your entire body, starting with the core and hips, to get maximum weight up.

MonkeysandParrots · 06/06/2015 09:10

I think (will check cause obs I can't see behind me very well Grin) that 100% means parallel and 120% is as far below parallel as my anatomy will allow me to get to!

MonkeysandParrots · 06/06/2015 09:13

According to my PT anyway - can appreciate why 100% would, in fact, mean ATG which is where I am trying to get to, I was a bit confused by the %s myself ...

brainwashed · 06/06/2015 09:52

Agree with chiruri just get on and learn technique....if your husband won't teach you find someone who will. My strict press is just above 20kg, my push press isn't even 40kg. My upper body strength is improving precisely because I am doing a variety of lifts within my capabilities and with focus on good form

chiruri · 06/06/2015 09:53

I'm wearing these to train today. No excuses! Grin

What did you pick up and put back down today?
brainwashed · 06/06/2015 09:54

I like them!

Boudicea31 · 06/06/2015 16:19

LOVING the squat socks!!! Haha!
Chiriru 37.5kg strict press! That is a very respectable press and if I recall rightly a 100kg deadlift? You are a beast!! Maybe you should do some local competitons?
Brainwashed - I agree with you! I mentioned again today to DH about Olympic lifts so when ive got this pre holiday fat burning phase out the way I'm going to start with the clean and jerk- Excited!!

Boudicea31 · 06/06/2015 16:23

Ps I would interpret 100% as parallel and 120% as ATG. I always THINK I'm ATG it flipping feels like it when in a hole with millios of kgs but apparently im parallel! Grin

chiruri · 06/06/2015 16:46

Haha, thanks Boudicea. I'd love to do Olympic lifting comps but I probably need to work on it a bit more first (and lose some weight!). My bench is too bad to consider powerlifting.
So pleased you're going to start learning Oly lifting! The clean is definitely my favourite lift ever.

Boudicea31 · 06/06/2015 16:53

Chiruri (pls change your name my predictive text keeps changing it to chorizo!) you have similar height weight measurements would you mind letting me know your lift stats for every lift - I'd love someone to benchmark myself against to help me set targets if that's ok? Xx

Vivacia · 06/06/2015 17:07

I only count ATG. If I don't my form starts to really slip, so I'm very strict now - I want to feel my thighs touching ankles Smile

OP posts:
chiruri · 06/06/2015 17:28

Chorizo is also a good name Wink
My stats are a little out of date (most were set pre-baby, or before I started the Oly lifting programme I'm halfway through just now) but here are the main ones I can remember:
Back squat - 97.5kg
Front squat - 70kg (definitely out of date, probably could lift more)
Deadlift - 105kg for 2 (not done a 1RM in months)
Push press - 57.5kg
Overhead squat - 60kg
Snatch - 47.5kg
Clean and jerk - 62.5kg

Vivacia · 06/06/2015 19:16

I am jealous! You push press more than I weigh!

OP posts:
brainwashed · 06/06/2015 19:18

Yep me too!

chiruri · 06/06/2015 20:35

Man, I wish it was more than I weighed! Unfortunately even my front squat is not quite reaching body weight. Yet.

Vivacia · 09/06/2015 12:12

Finished wave 2 of Wendler's 5/3/1 this morning.

Good news: Next wave will see some gains!

Bad news: Can't get back to the gym until Saturday at the earliest.

brainwashed · 12/06/2015 11:38

Pb at front squat today...45kg Grin

Vivacia · 14/06/2015 16:53

PB on the squat yesterday and PB on bench today. Thank you Wendler's wave 3 Smile

I think I got a bit carried away and am in need of a rest day.

OP posts:
goodasitgets · 15/06/2015 21:24

Couple of PB this week
50kg bench press for 8 reps
90kg deadlift for 5 reps
200kg on leg press for 12 reps
50kg squats but need to up this as did 3 x 10 and was ok

Vivacia · 16/06/2015 08:58

Back today and PB on deadlift Smile Feel confident about this because it's the first PB I've done twice with good form on the additional lift.

Fantastic week for you good!!

OP posts:
goodasitgets · 16/06/2015 15:12

Thanks Grin
This is my 90kg dead if link works (I know form is slightly off)
