A thread to share and celebrate success for those of us who don't know many fans of weight lifting in real life?

After a weekend of cardio and even more watching the DC do cardio, I got to the gym this morning.
Squats - fine, struggled with keeping good form a little with the last set. Won't be going up this week.
Bench - really struggled with the final set, failed on the 3rd rep. Instead of giving up I sat for a couple of minutes, psyched myself up and finished the set.
Rows - tried a new max for my last set and managed 2 good ones!!

Gym busy this morning, mix of familiar and unfamiliar. Three other women in the free weights area.

Low weights today for squats and OHP. Nothing to write home about. Finished with DL and hit a PB for the final 5. Got the weight lifting hunger now.

Gym very quiet, no other women around.

Kettlebells last night - need clean and pressing 12k for awhile but we did both arms at once. I ohp more than 24k on a barbell but that's different, this is a whole new world of pain because of the instability. Ouch.

25kg for front squats and power cleans today... The heaviest weights I've lifted since I broke my elbow Smile

Report
Vivacia · 08/05/2015 15:22

Squats went up 5lb this morning. Definitely heavy, and a bit slow, but still getting my bum to the floor.

Bench was ok and did Pendlay rows, also ok.

Gym was fairly quiet, quite a few people working with PTs. A couple of women in the free weights albeit not lifting heavy.

Yay for RJnomore and brainwashed Smile And Vivacia - sounds good progress.

I did presses with a beer keg (not full, but with some water in) in an outdoor, bootcamp-y, roughing-it type class. I think it was about 25kg but the combination of the awkward shape and water swirling around made it feel a lot heavier.

That's awesome Brainwashed! Nice one!
I got up to 27.5 kg front squat at the weekend, and did my heaviest weight ever on the squat track at Pump today. So I'm pretty happy. I really want to increase upper body strength though so that's my focus in the gym this week.

Took it easy on the squats and OHP today as it was deadlift day. OHP definitely feeling stronger (about bloody time).

Deadlifts were difficult. Last week it was my grip letting me down, today it was, er, just really heavy.

Back squat my favourite too! I am just below parallell but not quite the 'ass to grass' of the pro's! Asked husbabd to teach me the snatch today but he said no as my shoulder press and overhead squat are too weak/unstable which to be fair is true. Has anyone tried overhead squat??? It's so hard! I find it very difficult to actually squat my bum
Back!

I need to have plates under my heels for an overhead squat..but that might be more to do with the fact that I'm not able to fully lock out my R elbow since I broke it so I have to concentrate a lot on my arms in that one.
Maybe try learning the snatch technique with a pvc pipe? We do a lot of technique work with them which I find useful.

Thanks for thd tip brainwashed! Ivd now got the overhead squat perfected but only with 20kg bar not tried with significant weight yet. I notuced from watching cross fit games today there are a few snatch techniques? Thd throw IT all up muscle snatch then the clean snatch and another one with a sort of jump in. But as you say - best to start with a broom handle and work up! Xxx

Just found this section of MN. very cool. I'm male (hope I can post in here), I've competed in two powerlifting competitions so far. Bit of a meathead Grin

Nice one, Mide! Welcome!
I really like overhead squat. I got a PB the other day of 60kg! Now I'm mainly limited by my ability to actually get the weight over my head.
I'm into week 6 of a 5 day a week Oly lifting program. I've not tried a 1RM in a while but I'm feeling so much more comfortable with my technique, especially in my squat clean.

Thank you chiruri. I'm very impressed with all the overhead squatting in here. After a number of shoulder injuries playing rugby and too much bench pressing its not something I can do well Grin although I love overhead pressing. One of my favourite lifts

In my experience women seem much more 'natural' at OHS than men. I think it's to do with shoulder mobility, as lads tend to have spent years focussing on bench press and bulk up their chest so much that the struggle to lock out overhead. My OHS is actually marginally better than one of my coaches' for that reason!
I got some lifting shoes a couple of years ago and they transformed my squatting. I'd thoroughly recommend them if you don't already have them.

That's very interesting hadn't thought of it like that. Yes, gym men love benching. No one ever asks how much you squat. Although I've never spent any time trying to overhead squat because it doesn't really add to my sport.

I use Olympic lifting shoes and love them. I've recently started using them for overhead press and push press, which works well.

I currently stick to a 3 x 12 programme but unsure if this is best thing to do? Tuesday..40kg front facing hack squat, 60kg leg press (65kg body weight but like I said recovering from a broken leg), 20kg leg extension, 30kg lat pull down, 25kg low row, 15 minutes step machine (freefall steps not stairmaster which we sadly don't have) assisted pull ups/dips set at 35kg, Kinesis squats on the '8' setting and some ab work on the bosu ball along with bicep curls on it whilst balancing Grin

Today I did upper body work: dumbbells: curls, dips, skullcrushers, lateral raises, chest flys, lateral pull downs and low rows.
