Why do Harry and Meghan provoke such strong reactions in Britain?

Hello!
I’m genuinely posting this because I’m curious about people’s perspectives rather than wanting to argue. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if there’s an unnecessary pile-on I probably won’t respond. This is also just my personal experience as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK, rather than me claiming any particular expertise on British culture.

Anyway, I’ve always found the level of hatred towards Harry and Meghan really fascinating. I completely understand not liking them. I understand people thinking they’re hypocritical, disliking the Oprah interview, the Netflix series, Harry’s book etc. If someone thinks “I just don’t like them”, fair enough. What I find interesting is the sheer intensity of it and how many people seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing years later.

For context, I grew up in the US, SF to be specific, so very liberal maybe that's why. I have friends from school still in the states who have seen H and M lots with their children just doing everyday activities and no one cares, there's people I know who have met them and have spoken to them many times so to see the tabloids is quite interesting to see the juxtaposition. My dad is British and my mum is American and mixed race. I went to private school in the States and grew up extremely privileged, although obviously the American class system is quite different to the British one. I came to England for university and ended up staying, partly because I have family here.

Even with that background, I find the British class system fascinating. There seem to be all these very subtle distinctions around accent, school, family, manners, where you live, how you dress, whether you're "posh", "common", "trying too hard" etc. A lot of it seems completely unspoken, yet people who have grown up here immediately understand what is meant.

That makes me wonder about Meghan. She wasn’t just an outsider marrying into the Royal Family. She was American, biracial, divorced, an actress and didn’t come from the British aristocratic/upper-class world albeit privately educated, she is not 'common' at all, I think Catherine Middleton was 'common' in comparison at least according to the tabloids. I genuinely wonder how much of what people interpreted as her being rude, fake, attention-seeking or not understanding British culture was actually her not knowing some of these very British social rules.

And I do think there is sometimes an anti-American element that gets brushed over. Obviously not every British person dislikes Americans, but there is definitely a stereotype of Americans being loud, gauche, overly familiar, obsessed with money/status etc. I’ve experienced enough of it myself to know it exists. I sometimes wonder whether Meghan being American made her an easier target because she didn’t instinctively understand the British way of doing things.

Then there’s the race issue. I’m mixed race myself, but interestingly you wouldn’t necessarily know that just by looking at me. I had blonde hair growing up and have green eyes, and people are always surprised when they meet my parents and then see my siblings and me. So I’m very aware that you can’t necessarily look at someone and know their background.

That’s why some of the discussion around Meghan and her children has always struck me as odd. Her children are very light-skinned and could easily be perceived as white by someone who doesn’t know their family background, but obviously that doesn’t change their ancestry. And whatever anyone thinks about Harry and Meghan, I find the way some people talk about their children completely beyond the pale. They are children. I don't think criticism of their parents should extend to dehumanising or racialised comments about them.
I’m not saying that every criticism of Meghan is racist. I actually think that argument can become too simplistic. People can dislike her for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with race. But I also find it strange when people insist race could not possibly have played any role at all, particularly given some of the very explicit racialised commentary that existed around her.

The other thing I find fascinating is Harry himself. I wonder whether some of the anger towards Meghan is actually partly about what Harry represents. He was essentially presented for years as the cheeky, handsome younger prince and there was this whole fairy-tale idea that an ordinary British woman could marry him. William marrying Kate probably reinforced that to some extent.
Then Harry marries an American woman, leaves the UK and moves to California. And there seems to be a genuine feeling amongst some people that he has personally betrayed the British public. But I struggle to understand that level of emotional investment. He is a person who made decisions about his own marriage and his own life. Why does someone you have never met moving to another country make you so angry?

And this is probably the bit I find most fascinating as an outsider. People will say they don't care about Harry and Meghan, that they're irrelevant, that nobody is interested in them anymore and then seemingly know every single thing they’ve done for the last six years.

So I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing. Is it simply that people think they’re hypocrites and have behaved badly? Is it the way they’ve spoken about the Royal Family? Is it class? Is it anti-American sentiment? Is race a factor? Is it resentment that Harry left? Is it just that they’re particularly irritating to people?
Because I can understand “I dislike Harry and Meghan”. What I find much harder to understand is “I absolutely cannot stand Harry and Meghan” followed by a detailed analysis of everything they’ve done since 2020.
Maybe this is just a cultural difference and I’m completely missing something obvious because I didn’t grow up here.

I do however think that especially wit the fall of the empire, the RF could have used Meghan as an asset but I cannot 100% comment on how that would have worked out I do not know her personally. I only have anecdote from friends in the states who have met them and who lived near them, they were always out and about in the states, a few friends have seen their children many times, those children do not look black at all, so whoever was worried about their race and phenotype can sleep peacefully. Guessing most of the family has met them by now. My own children do not look mixed race at all yet ancestry wise and half their family is African American, traceable to a specific plantation before my mother's family moved to SF. I am mixed race(white father and black mother) but grew up with everyone assuming I am white so many that is where my perspective comes from.

I find the whole thing fascinating? Especially after the whatsapp situation. And for those of you who grew up in the UK, particularly if you have absolutely no connection to the aristocracy or Royal Family, what is it about them that generates such a strong reaction?

Show us the evidence she was in prison.... We'll wait.

Oh ffs, of course I can't show you evidence! Doesn't mean it's not true. But you can look up Tom Bower's interview where he says he knows the reason that Doria was absent from Meghan's life for some years but legally he can't say why. Bower is a respected source and he would not say that on camera if it wasn't true.

https://pressgazette.co.uk/the-wire/newspaper-corrections-media-mistakes-errors-legal/gb-news-apologises-to-meghan-markles-mother-doria-ragland-for-false-prison-claim/

I think if Dora had been in prision with prison sentences in the United States would generate public records, including court conviction records and Department of Corrections incarceration listings and press would find and then not back down - so I think it just rumour possibly racist one from USA.

How much she was around and when seems heavily disputed but I've seen various rumours saying if she wasn't she was studying at university for qualifications to she was living in a commune.

I suppose you've never heard of a record being expunged. It happens all the time in the States, and Doria about to become a public figure would have been a good reason to request it and for it to be granted, especially as weed is now legal in California.

My source also said that the British papers wouldn't publish it because it wasn't fair on Meghan, being that she can't help what her mother did.

I said to a friend, "Well, two men were sent to prison because they threatened Harry because he'd married a black woman." The friend said, "Black? She's not black. She's just about one shade darker than I am." The friend is what is termed 'white Caucasian' and gets a tan from the sun.

Exactly. Only in crazy America is Meghan considered black.

Princessfluffy · 20/09/2026 08:40

There’s clearly an absence of Doris from Meghan’s young life that lasted for YEARS. Despite a lot of questions being raised neither Doria or Maghan has provided any explanation. I think we are all free to draw our own conclusions.

It’s just so bizarre that no family came to Markles wedding, I think the Markle / Doria family closet has so many skeletons it’s a graveyard … so she rubbed them all out metaphorically speaking

There was no family there from Doria's side either.. or the Markles, all said they were very surprised not to have been invited.
What about the niece she was supposed to have been very close to? No invite for her either...

Meg certainly seems to be a ruthless editor of her family and friends. I expect H and the kids don’t have much longer on the clock at this point.

DontSayItsOver · 20/09/2026 11:58

Too many people with nothing going for them in their own lives so they develop parasocial hatreds of people they don’t know and have never met.

I do believe as time goes on the Royal Family will become less and less of a topic of interest. Young people have too many real issues to deal with to waste their time gossiping about princesses like deranged school children.

I really don’t know either! From the offset (before the Netflix docs, before the books, before the Oprah interview) they were always met with more negative press attention than Catherine & William. Before they did anything perceived as ‘wrong’ or hypocritical’. So of course when they DID leave to the US and did these things, it was met with even more criticism. I don’t think it matters what they do, there will always be people making negative commentary.

People are upset they want security, well of course they do. Wouldn’t anyone if they received such attention in the media? Royal or not! Doesn’t erase the fact Prince Harry IS still the kings son. Of course they went to protect their family.

of course - some stuff is ridiculous like Meghans Netflix documentary but they certainly don’t deserve the hatred that they get.

My source also said that the British papers wouldn't publish it because it wasn't fair on Meghan, being that she can't help what her mother did.

It would have to meet set criteria and long prison time makes that less likely plus often not all records go - federal and private databases often still have records and any newspaper reporting would be unaffected.

Even if every record was got rid of correctly - people memories - no cops who arrested no prsion guards no fellow inmates no cell mates who need cash seems odd.

As for British newpaper being fair to Meghan - that odd as well as they are not known for it and Harry's been involved in court case after court case with them.

It's like most conspiracies once you realise number of peple who have to stay quiet it makes fuck all sense. There's a section of US society that hears black and thinks prison and drugs and this theroy just fits their world view.

I've also seen people online who claim to know Tom Bower insit he refering to who she was living with - someone so powerful no-one dare cross - which sounds equally as far fetched - and other who claim she was involved in organised crime but not caught - which would not really explain any absence.

The truth is likely very mundande - she was living unconventional or she was away studying and left her child with other parent to do so.

I think Meghan was in hindsight using the wedding as networking event and just having her mum there was making some kind of point to someone - possibly Harry as he did later make some comment about showing her what having a family was like.

piscofrisco · 20/09/2026 12:17

It’s because they are a bit irritating and talk in words salads about being authentic and such, and can’t laugh at themselves in the slightest. Part of our sort of British sense of humour, if there is such a thing, is that we can laugh at ourselves and we are often self depreciating. Megan in particular (but Hazzer as well) come across as a bit pretentious but don’t seem to have any awareness of that, and they take themselves so seriously, whilst actually coming across as being kind of ridiculous and precious at times. That just leads us to want to poke them and laugh at them more I guess.

Megamegablahblah · 20/09/2026 13:15

I just rewatched the Harry and Meghan netflix series and came here to comment. The thread is 8 pages in so has probably descended into vitriol or bun slinging but I will post.

I am not an avid royalist, I am ill this weekend so needed some light relief. There is a massive fondness for the Queen in this country and a huge love of William and Catherine. I think generally people see that Harry went a bit off rails but he is younger and there is an empathy for both sons as they lost their mother quite young.

I suspect among the public there is a false sense of investment (or not false cobsidering tax payers money) and possibly from the outset it moved quite fast but that is just a minor thing. I think, watching the documentary back, there were a few areas where it went wrong for them. There was the negative media headlines which were racially stereotyped. Harry points out the intrusion used to be physical, this is now psychological and hate fuelled. This isn't about Meghan per se it is actually a wise but uncomfortable observation about the bizarre online divisive world one which has only continued to get worse. Later on the documentary shows that most of this hate came from around 80 accounts. 80 account that reached 17 million people. So Meghan simply coincided with rising populism. Harrys point was that nobody came out to defend it. I think this is important. We generally do agree that children should be protected, but gender (read feminism) and race are not areas much of Britain feels comfortable shouting about equality on - it tends to happen within pockets which are already supportive but its not a united area. And I mean can America say that it is united on standing up for womens rights and racial equality? I do think saying nothing however reinforces a race to the bottom. I don't know. Ultimately I think Harry is not as important as William probably. And the Queen and Charles have been leaning toward a smaller role for monarchy.

There was then the bizarre letter thing. I am still confused if Meghans Dad did sell stories or not, but either way Meghan was painted (despite being advised by the Palace to send a letter!) as the brat.

There was also the public comment from someone at an event that she should not have treated her father like that. Meghan didn't realise the public believed the press til then. TBF most of the public don't care but there had not been much support from the royals.

Then there was the interview in Africa. Meghan herself said she had no idea what she was to be asked. She just answered honestly and at this point she has a 4 month old child so I doubt was really thinking about being media polished.

Meghan and Harry just wanted to be physically away from the British media circus so they were trying to achieve that by living in the common wealth on their own money.

I think the Oprah interview was badly timed as psychologically they were both going through an adjustment.

In terms of why is there so much hate. Obviously its mostly to sell media headlines. In terms of followers, I think it links to rising populism and divisive politics. In terms of the royal response, I just think more than anything the main concern is to not do anything to upset Williams transition to the throne.

I don't buy the idea that Meghan has no self deprecation, she has bags of it in the Netflix series. I also think American culture is not that jarring, we have grown up with it since the 90s in the UK.

When H married M, I thought - that’s never going to work - she will never submit to the restrictions of RF life - and she didn’t.

They both claimed they wanted out and the freedom to live private lives. So far, so good.

But then they set in train a series of attacks on H’s family which are still resonating today, and made the final years of his grandparents’ lives extremely stressful.

And they didn’t really want to stop being royal, did they? But the daft pair didn’t think ahead and realise the consequences of their rash behaviour.

That’s why I don’t like them - they’re ruthless troublemakers and have hurt many people.

I’d never heard of that rule. By that definition I would be considered Gujerati. My late Dad was genetically just under 50% Gujerati (according to DNA testing via Ancestry). I came out at 37%. He looked quite Gujerati when he was young but as he got older looked more Caucasian. I don’t look Gujerati in the slightest, I don’t even tan that well.Dad was raised in what was then British India (he was 96 when he died last year so until
he was 16 or so that was a thing still and his ‘Dad’
was in the army there-it seems my grandmother had had an affair with a Gujerati man and he was the result, although this was never acknowledged.

Im probably as Mixed race as Meghan but it would never occur to me to even mention it-and no one would know it to look at me, in the same way that the vast majority of people didn’t think twice about it with her until she started claiming she was being racially targeted. If she was it was probably more due to being American than being down to her being ‘black’ I think. At first and for a long while anyway. Maybe it later became a self fulfilling prophesy as the racists leapt on it which is clearly unacceptable.

They never really talk about the children being mixed race do they? Though by their definition they are aren’t they? Which I find interesting.

@piscofrisco

i find M’s celebration of her daughter’s “blue, blue eyes’ slightly uncomfortable. Too much to go into here without writing an essay but I’ve never thought M particularly identifies with her African American heritage. Over the years she’s changed her appearance to look more Caucasian - more like her idol, Julia Robert’s, in fact - and while there must have been societal and professional pressures on her to do so, I still find it a bit uncomfortable.
