Why do Harry and Meghan provoke such strong reactions in Britain?

Hello!
I’m genuinely posting this because I’m curious about people’s perspectives rather than wanting to argue. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if there’s an unnecessary pile-on I probably won’t respond. This is also just my personal experience as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK, rather than me claiming any particular expertise on British culture.

Anyway, I’ve always found the level of hatred towards Harry and Meghan really fascinating. I completely understand not liking them. I understand people thinking they’re hypocritical, disliking the Oprah interview, the Netflix series, Harry’s book etc. If someone thinks “I just don’t like them”, fair enough. What I find interesting is the sheer intensity of it and how many people seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing years later.

For context, I grew up in the US, SF to be specific, so very liberal maybe that's why. I have friends from school still in the states who have seen H and M lots with their children just doing everyday activities and no one cares, there's people I know who have met them and have spoken to them many times so to see the tabloids is quite interesting to see the juxtaposition. My dad is British and my mum is American and mixed race. I went to private school in the States and grew up extremely privileged, although obviously the American class system is quite different to the British one. I came to England for university and ended up staying, partly because I have family here.

Even with that background, I find the British class system fascinating. There seem to be all these very subtle distinctions around accent, school, family, manners, where you live, how you dress, whether you're "posh", "common", "trying too hard" etc. A lot of it seems completely unspoken, yet people who have grown up here immediately understand what is meant.

That makes me wonder about Meghan. She wasn’t just an outsider marrying into the Royal Family. She was American, biracial, divorced, an actress and didn’t come from the British aristocratic/upper-class world albeit privately educated, she is not 'common' at all, I think Catherine Middleton was 'common' in comparison at least according to the tabloids. I genuinely wonder how much of what people interpreted as her being rude, fake, attention-seeking or not understanding British culture was actually her not knowing some of these very British social rules.

And I do think there is sometimes an anti-American element that gets brushed over. Obviously not every British person dislikes Americans, but there is definitely a stereotype of Americans being loud, gauche, overly familiar, obsessed with money/status etc. I’ve experienced enough of it myself to know it exists. I sometimes wonder whether Meghan being American made her an easier target because she didn’t instinctively understand the British way of doing things.

Then there’s the race issue. I’m mixed race myself, but interestingly you wouldn’t necessarily know that just by looking at me. I had blonde hair growing up and have green eyes, and people are always surprised when they meet my parents and then see my siblings and me. So I’m very aware that you can’t necessarily look at someone and know their background.

That’s why some of the discussion around Meghan and her children has always struck me as odd. Her children are very light-skinned and could easily be perceived as white by someone who doesn’t know their family background, but obviously that doesn’t change their ancestry. And whatever anyone thinks about Harry and Meghan, I find the way some people talk about their children completely beyond the pale. They are children. I don't think criticism of their parents should extend to dehumanising or racialised comments about them.
I’m not saying that every criticism of Meghan is racist. I actually think that argument can become too simplistic. People can dislike her for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with race. But I also find it strange when people insist race could not possibly have played any role at all, particularly given some of the very explicit racialised commentary that existed around her.

The other thing I find fascinating is Harry himself. I wonder whether some of the anger towards Meghan is actually partly about what Harry represents. He was essentially presented for years as the cheeky, handsome younger prince and there was this whole fairy-tale idea that an ordinary British woman could marry him. William marrying Kate probably reinforced that to some extent.
Then Harry marries an American woman, leaves the UK and moves to California. And there seems to be a genuine feeling amongst some people that he has personally betrayed the British public. But I struggle to understand that level of emotional investment. He is a person who made decisions about his own marriage and his own life. Why does someone you have never met moving to another country make you so angry?

And this is probably the bit I find most fascinating as an outsider. People will say they don't care about Harry and Meghan, that they're irrelevant, that nobody is interested in them anymore and then seemingly know every single thing they’ve done for the last six years.

So I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing. Is it simply that people think they’re hypocrites and have behaved badly? Is it the way they’ve spoken about the Royal Family? Is it class? Is it anti-American sentiment? Is race a factor? Is it resentment that Harry left? Is it just that they’re particularly irritating to people?
Because I can understand “I dislike Harry and Meghan”. What I find much harder to understand is “I absolutely cannot stand Harry and Meghan” followed by a detailed analysis of everything they’ve done since 2020.
Maybe this is just a cultural difference and I’m completely missing something obvious because I didn’t grow up here.

I do however think that especially wit the fall of the empire, the RF could have used Meghan as an asset but I cannot 100% comment on how that would have worked out I do not know her personally. I only have anecdote from friends in the states who have met them and who lived near them, they were always out and about in the states, a few friends have seen their children many times, those children do not look black at all, so whoever was worried about their race and phenotype can sleep peacefully. Guessing most of the family has met them by now. My own children do not look mixed race at all yet ancestry wise and half their family is African American, traceable to a specific plantation before my mother's family moved to SF. I am mixed race(white father and black mother) but grew up with everyone assuming I am white so many that is where my perspective comes from.

I find the whole thing fascinating? Especially after the whatsapp situation. And for those of you who grew up in the UK, particularly if you have absolutely no connection to the aristocracy or Royal Family, what is it about them that generates such a strong reaction?

It became increasingly clear that she married him without any intention of becoming a working royal . She serves herself and he's stupid enough to have betrayed his own family and nation for her . I don't believe a word that leaves her mouth . And it's not her race cos actually thay was a really exciting and positive thing that the UK was happy about it bought a whole new dynamic to the royals, and we hoped for some American charm and easiness instead we got diva demands. Stamping her feet and using her race to silence ppl .
As time has gone on and I look back the signs where their from day one . Harry's statements the press accusing them of racism. None of her family bar her mother attending the wedding (not referring to her dad he's his own shit show with her siblings ) it feels like she didn't want dorias family their ,why ? . The fact when Harry asked the queen's permission to propose .her response was i suppose I'll have to say yes . She has used being mixed race to her advantage and she knows full well it was advantageous to her . Theirs not a person on this planet who can convince me Megan would have had any interest in him had he not been a prince . She manipulative and he's just a dunce .

what an unhinged and cruel post.

It's a US/Britain culture clash thing. They're very, very funny because they take themselves so seriously and have so little self awareness, particularly of how status-obsessed they come across as.

curious79 · 17/09/2026 21:31

You’re definitely much more interested in then than I am if you can be ar5ed to write an essay about them

I don’t care where they live or what they do. That’s entirely up to them and I wish them well with whatever choices they make.

I do, however, care about who pays for it. If H&M don’t want to be working royals, fine. They don’t want to do the job, & that’s completely understandable. But they can’t then expect the British taxpayer to fund, directly or indirectly, any aspect of their lives. They must support themselves financially and live a lifestyle they can actually afford to fund. I object to one single penny of my taxes going to fund them.

Absolutely 100% agree with this. Why should my taxes pay for their security, when they've created the issues themselves?

crumpet · 17/09/2026 21:45

Bloody hell that’s one of the longest posts I’ve seen on here for ages. Haven’t read the whole of it, but a couple of points:

race has got sod all to do with it . She was welcomed with open arms, the idea of her joining the royal family was seen like a breath of fresh air. Did you not see the crowds who watched the wedding?

they could have departed quietly, and lived their own lives. The Oprah, the Spare, really felt self absorbed, which would have put people’s backs up.

the South Park privacy cartoon summed up how a lot of people felt - shouting about privacy whilst regularly feeding the news.

People are most probably irritated and curious in the same measure. Can’t imagine many hate them though.

It’s nothing to do with being American. Or being divorced or being a woman or being an outsider.

its to do with being against the UK saying rude and insulting things and turning harry against his family and his country when he previously was liked and liked the uk.

This 👆👆👆👆👆

FancyKitten · 17/09/2026 21:52

It’s not hatred… So much was expected of them (her)(rightly or wrongly). They just didn’t deliver. Such a wasted opportunity!

And people care enough about this- something which doesn’t really impact them, ye wouldn’t know about it if it wasn’t in the papers, more than the men around the world that are destroying everything? You’ve got to admit that’s a bit nuts!!!

Was he in love with her or nobody else really wanted him??

Chelsy, Cressida & Florence all got rid of him fairly quickly.. I do think if he married Chelsy (who is African & also had to get used to the UK way of life) he would have had a great life in her native Zimbabwe doing environmental & conservation work. He loved Africa & visiting Chelsy's parents in Zimbabwe.
Chelsy now has a great life in Mauritius with her gorgeous hubby, business & kids. Very happy for her. She was the one who got away (luckily!)

AlwaysRightISwear · 17/09/2026 22:13

Chelsy and Cressida both had fairly long relationships with H. But Chelsy's father was problematic as a royal in law, and it can't be accidental that Cressida went back to the pre Harry bf.

Yes but Chelsy always fitted right in with Harry's circle of friends etc, I think she was friends went them first as she came to the UK from Zimbabwe to boarding school in her late teens.. he just seemed so comfortable with her... I loved them as a couple & feel like a life working for the crown in Africa would have been wonderful for him
I also liked Cressida a lot but yes she went back to her ex after.

yep, just a teensy bit of perfectly average hate and vitriol...

FancyKitten · 17/09/2026 22:21

Yes, Chelsy’s dad was a problem… RF would have looked into MM, but it seems Harry was intent on marrying her. I think Thomas Markle did let his daughter down, but I also think the whole thing was too much for an old recluse like him. He just wasn’t prepared… I mean the Queen of England was Harry’s granny! No pressure, like…

Mirrorlolo · 17/09/2026 22:33

Meghan was welcomed as a gorgeous breath of fresh air. The red flags started over her not inviting any family members other than her mother. For me I started to have concerns when they began lecturing about climate change while constantly and unnecessarily using private planes. Since then have behaved desperately badly and lie constantly while demonstrating mind boggling hypocrisy, I have no respect for them and it's got nothing to do with race or nationality and everything to do with their behaviour.

I don't think TM let her down as such as you said it was all too much for him & he didn't get any help from the palace. If I was Ham I would have insisted he was flown to the UK two months before the wedding & prepped on all aspects of what was expected.
Hams treatment of him & not inviting any of Megs extended family to the wedding was a really bad look.

Had Harry wanted to marry Chelsy do you think the rf would have gotten past her dad? Harry speaks very warmly of her parents in Spare.. Chelsy's heart & family was in Zimbabwe, I think Harry would have happily moved & done great work for the crown there. I feel had he married Chelsy or Cressida he would still have a great relationship with his family & would be a great help to KC...

Climate change is hilarious ... lecturing us then using a convoy to bring your kids to school! So hypocritical... do as I say not as I do ...

TLDR. Read only the title but since you asked. Mainly because they’ve slagged us off as a nation unmercifully but still want us to pay for everything.

noonames · 17/09/2026 22:53

I think it’s mainly three things: the entitlement, the lying and the hypocrisy. Even one of those would be bad but all three together, a lot of people find it hard to take.
