Why do Harry and Meghan provoke such strong reactions in Britain?

Hello!
I’m genuinely posting this because I’m curious about people’s perspectives rather than wanting to argue. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if there’s an unnecessary pile-on I probably won’t respond. This is also just my personal experience as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK, rather than me claiming any particular expertise on British culture.

Anyway, I’ve always found the level of hatred towards Harry and Meghan really fascinating. I completely understand not liking them. I understand people thinking they’re hypocritical, disliking the Oprah interview, the Netflix series, Harry’s book etc. If someone thinks “I just don’t like them”, fair enough. What I find interesting is the sheer intensity of it and how many people seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing years later.

For context, I grew up in the US, SF to be specific, so very liberal maybe that's why. I have friends from school still in the states who have seen H and M lots with their children just doing everyday activities and no one cares, there's people I know who have met them and have spoken to them many times so to see the tabloids is quite interesting to see the juxtaposition. My dad is British and my mum is American and mixed race. I went to private school in the States and grew up extremely privileged, although obviously the American class system is quite different to the British one. I came to England for university and ended up staying, partly because I have family here.

Even with that background, I find the British class system fascinating. There seem to be all these very subtle distinctions around accent, school, family, manners, where you live, how you dress, whether you're "posh", "common", "trying too hard" etc. A lot of it seems completely unspoken, yet people who have grown up here immediately understand what is meant.

That makes me wonder about Meghan. She wasn’t just an outsider marrying into the Royal Family. She was American, biracial, divorced, an actress and didn’t come from the British aristocratic/upper-class world albeit privately educated, she is not 'common' at all, I think Catherine Middleton was 'common' in comparison at least according to the tabloids. I genuinely wonder how much of what people interpreted as her being rude, fake, attention-seeking or not understanding British culture was actually her not knowing some of these very British social rules.

And I do think there is sometimes an anti-American element that gets brushed over. Obviously not every British person dislikes Americans, but there is definitely a stereotype of Americans being loud, gauche, overly familiar, obsessed with money/status etc. I’ve experienced enough of it myself to know it exists. I sometimes wonder whether Meghan being American made her an easier target because she didn’t instinctively understand the British way of doing things.

Then there’s the race issue. I’m mixed race myself, but interestingly you wouldn’t necessarily know that just by looking at me. I had blonde hair growing up and have green eyes, and people are always surprised when they meet my parents and then see my siblings and me. So I’m very aware that you can’t necessarily look at someone and know their background.

That’s why some of the discussion around Meghan and her children has always struck me as odd. Her children are very light-skinned and could easily be perceived as white by someone who doesn’t know their family background, but obviously that doesn’t change their ancestry. And whatever anyone thinks about Harry and Meghan, I find the way some people talk about their children completely beyond the pale. They are children. I don't think criticism of their parents should extend to dehumanising or racialised comments about them.
I’m not saying that every criticism of Meghan is racist. I actually think that argument can become too simplistic. People can dislike her for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with race. But I also find it strange when people insist race could not possibly have played any role at all, particularly given some of the very explicit racialised commentary that existed around her.

The other thing I find fascinating is Harry himself. I wonder whether some of the anger towards Meghan is actually partly about what Harry represents. He was essentially presented for years as the cheeky, handsome younger prince and there was this whole fairy-tale idea that an ordinary British woman could marry him. William marrying Kate probably reinforced that to some extent.
Then Harry marries an American woman, leaves the UK and moves to California. And there seems to be a genuine feeling amongst some people that he has personally betrayed the British public. But I struggle to understand that level of emotional investment. He is a person who made decisions about his own marriage and his own life. Why does someone you have never met moving to another country make you so angry?

And this is probably the bit I find most fascinating as an outsider. People will say they don't care about Harry and Meghan, that they're irrelevant, that nobody is interested in them anymore and then seemingly know every single thing they’ve done for the last six years.

So I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing. Is it simply that people think they’re hypocrites and have behaved badly? Is it the way they’ve spoken about the Royal Family? Is it class? Is it anti-American sentiment? Is race a factor? Is it resentment that Harry left? Is it just that they’re particularly irritating to people?
Because I can understand “I dislike Harry and Meghan”. What I find much harder to understand is “I absolutely cannot stand Harry and Meghan” followed by a detailed analysis of everything they’ve done since 2020.
Maybe this is just a cultural difference and I’m completely missing something obvious because I didn’t grow up here.

I do however think that especially wit the fall of the empire, the RF could have used Meghan as an asset but I cannot 100% comment on how that would have worked out I do not know her personally. I only have anecdote from friends in the states who have met them and who lived near them, they were always out and about in the states, a few friends have seen their children many times, those children do not look black at all, so whoever was worried about their race and phenotype can sleep peacefully. Guessing most of the family has met them by now. My own children do not look mixed race at all yet ancestry wise and half their family is African American, traceable to a specific plantation before my mother's family moved to SF. I am mixed race(white father and black mother) but grew up with everyone assuming I am white so many that is where my perspective comes from.

I find the whole thing fascinating? Especially after the whatsapp situation. And for those of you who grew up in the UK, particularly if you have absolutely no connection to the aristocracy or Royal Family, what is it about them that generates such a strong reaction?

They don't have self importance with no humility either.

"We get on the plane. And it's not the pilot, but whoever is sort of overseeing the crew, and he came and he knelt next to my seat and he took his hat off. I just remember looking at him, and he goes, 'We appreciate everything you did for our country.' And it was the first time I felt like someone saw the sacrifice."

"A cast member from South Africa pulled her aside. He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, ‘I just need you to know, when you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.’"

"Especially when, look, I, the Commonwealth is a huge part of the monarchy, and I lived in Canada, which is a Commonwealth country, for seven years. But it wasn’t until Harry and I were together that we started to travel through the Commonwealth, I would say 60 per cent, 70 per cent of which is people of colour, right? And growing up as a woman of colour, as a little girl of colour, I know how important representation is. I know how you want to see someone who looks like you in certain positions. Even Archie. Like, we read these books, and now he’s been, there’s one line in one that goes, ‘If you can see it, you can be it’. And he goes, ‘You can be it!’ And I think about that so often, especially in the context of these young girls, but even grown women and men who, when I would meet them in our time in the Commonwealth, how much it meant to them to be able to see someone who looks like them in this position. And I could never understand how it wouldn’t be seen as an added benefit."

Imagine how little else you've got going on in your life to have those quotes at your fingertips.

it’s because her mum is black that they don’t accept her

Don’t talk such nonsense. There was great hope, the wedding was wonderful and lots of people welcomed her. They have done this to themselves and won’t shut up about their lot in life with various interviews spouting lies.

They go on and one about privacy and then brief out everything they are doing.

Who bloody cares.

If I was very generous that this is a genuine enquiry and youll forgive that like an earlier PP I also stopped reading at chapter 3..

In my expereince.. no one cares.. maybe the tabloids

No one i knew realised she was bi-racial.

I dont think i had a negative opinion until the Oprah interview and the netflix documentary. There are many lies in the Oprah interview and I found the netflix thing a bit disrespectful to The Queen and false. Like who records all their FT calls and she was on the phone to friend when she thought he was proposing and then like filmed it.. theres a disingenuous vibe about it.

Also, they said they wanted to be out public eye. Reasonable, completely fair.. but theyre immediately then courting the public eye and doing it on the back of their HRH status even if they arent publicising it.

If asked and I thought about it i find them contrary and entitled. Based on their content alone.

That said if im not asked I dont think about them or care. I think its nice theyre back, I hope it means their children can spend more time with their grandad.

At best and pushed every single person ive ever spoken with about them has found them maybe annoying. No one hates them

Goodness, @ForAmple , most people in the UK don't give two hoots about harry and meghan, or anyone in the royal family (and, no, I wouldn't know much about them if you asked me). They seem more of an object of fascination in the US. This topic seems to get more US posters than any other. (EDIT: Are you basing your perceptions on social media posts? For any topic under the sun there will be a cohort of obsessives - a tiny number of people posting so copiously that they give the impression that a niche interest is widely shared.)

And as for the UK class system, are you getting your info from Downton Abbey? There seems to be just as much of a 'class system' in the US, just with very different signifiers of wealth and status

I think people DO find them jarring because they are guilty of two very important crimes that are really looked down upon within British culture:

  1. fakeness / in-authenticity
  2. self-importance without humility

According to Tom Bower (Hes a lawyer and they’ve never sued him…) the RF didn’t want Doria to sit in isolation, but M insisted. I remember thinking

  • how awful for her to be so alone and
  • later, when they left the chapel and Charles and various royals tried to engage her in conversation, she remained stony-faced and didn’t respond with equal warmth (not making this up - I remember feeling disappointed, as if Charles lovely gestures towards both her and Meghan hadn’t been received well for some reason).
Tom Bower believes that Doria was under instruction not to talk to the royals- and also, she must have known how it would look, for the world to see her sitting alone. Was this another ploy to make the RF look bad?

Bower also says that the Middletons invited Meghan more than once, and Doria at the time of the wedding, to stay with them, but all invitations were refused.

Yes. It's all very very odd. I felt very sorry for Doria but her own side of the family also spoke out, her sister said they were surprised not to be invited as they were on good terms with Meghan. Was Meghan embarrassed by her own family? Or was she afraid they would spill some beans about the past? It just does not add up.

She's only considered black in America. Over there, being mixed race is the same as being black. It's so weird. In the UK, she's bi-racial, which isn't the same as being black, to us, is it. That's probably why she thought all her negative press was down to racism. Meanwhile, the entire population of the UK was out there assuming her ancestors were from the Southern Mediterranean or such, before she started going on about race!

I remember seeing a Trevor Noah bit about moving to America, where an American friend had told him that in America, he'd be considered black. Trevor was like, "Really???"

To me, it's ridiculous to consider someone like Meghan black. She's hyped it up with black hair dye and deep fake tan (I suspect to better support her victim claim) but if you look at her when younger, her skin is really pale and her hair is medium to dark brown, not the witchy jet black she has going on. She doesn't even look a tiny bit black. And yet she claims she suffers all the racism that actual black people do. 🙄

Well it feeds the victim narrative and that's all that matters to her.

You know im willing to accept she may have faced some racism, at some point.

But its not even that I thought she was Mediterranean, I didnt think about anything at all. I do remember her saying something about people in the commonwealth being POC and therefore appreciating seeing someone who liked like them in her. Then thinking oh is she mixed race.

But I do think if you werent told, youd never realise.

I absolutely believe some of the tabloids will have looked into her background and realised she was bi-racial and acted like it was scandalous. But in real life I dont know a single person who realised she was bi-racial until they heard Meghan or Harry talking about it in the news. And I dont know a single person who cared once they did.

Everyone who says something negative about her its about her entitlement, or proven lies, or drama. And most blame him for not having told her what it would be like or telling her when she was disrespectful. Joking on netflix about his grandma wasnt nice. She was our Queen and his gran

Crumble1719 · 18/09/2026 10:04

Nothing to do with her background. We pay for the Royal Family to enjoy privileges that we couldn’t imagine in our wildest dreams. The British public therefore expect something back in return: something to feel proud of on the international stage and that we are all players in our shared history and culture. They also need to show sufficient gratitude and humility for the benefits bestowed on them and for the people paying for these privileges because the monarchy exists only with consent of the people.

Agree

Agree

This is a big part of why people have a problem with H+M I think - they seem to want the trappings, cling on to their titles and expect us to pay for their security, but didn’t fancy or weren’t capable of the work, and show precious little gratitude and humility. Instead we get damaging political nonsense from Harry and accusations that the judiciary is corrupt.

Agree with all. And yes, I do believe that she might have experienced racism back in America before she straightened her natural Afro hair, since the place is so racist. She certainly saw her mother being mistreated for being black. That's about the one tale of hers that does ring true to me!

But she got Britain all wrong.

I have insider knowledge. Am close to a journalist on a national daily paper who knows Tom Bower. As he referred to in an interview, he knows why Doria was absent from Meghan's life for quite some years in her youth, but legally he can't say why. Doria was in prison for drug-dealing. Just weed, but still. Americans are tough on drugs, or they were back then. That's why the sentence was only about 8-10 years or so instead of the 30 or so she'd have got from Class A dealing. She was a Californian hippy who was high on weed a lot of the time and then got caught dealing. For all the photos of Meghan online, there are none of her with Doria between age around 12 and adulthood.

I'm absolutely sure that this why her dad's side was excluded from the wedding, even her paternal niece, Ashley, who is around the same age as Meghan and with whom she had previously been close.

I think if Dora had been in prision with prison sentences in the United States would generate public records, including court conviction records and Department of Corrections incarceration listings and press would find and then not back down - so I think it just rumour possibly racist one from USA.

How much she was around and when seems heavily disputed but I've seen various rumours saying if she wasn't she was studying at university for qualifications to she was living in a commune.

I said to a friend, "Well, two men were sent to prison because they threatened Harry because he'd married a black woman." The friend said, "Black? She's not black. She's just about one shade darker than I am." The friend is what is termed 'white Caucasian' and gets a tan from the sun.
