Why do Harry and Meghan provoke such strong reactions in Britain?

Hello!
I’m genuinely posting this because I’m curious about people’s perspectives rather than wanting to argue. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if there’s an unnecessary pile-on I probably won’t respond. This is also just my personal experience as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK, rather than me claiming any particular expertise on British culture.

Anyway, I’ve always found the level of hatred towards Harry and Meghan really fascinating. I completely understand not liking them. I understand people thinking they’re hypocritical, disliking the Oprah interview, the Netflix series, Harry’s book etc. If someone thinks “I just don’t like them”, fair enough. What I find interesting is the sheer intensity of it and how many people seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing years later.

For context, I grew up in the US, SF to be specific, so very liberal maybe that's why. I have friends from school still in the states who have seen H and M lots with their children just doing everyday activities and no one cares, there's people I know who have met them and have spoken to them many times so to see the tabloids is quite interesting to see the juxtaposition. My dad is British and my mum is American and mixed race. I went to private school in the States and grew up extremely privileged, although obviously the American class system is quite different to the British one. I came to England for university and ended up staying, partly because I have family here.

Even with that background, I find the British class system fascinating. There seem to be all these very subtle distinctions around accent, school, family, manners, where you live, how you dress, whether you're "posh", "common", "trying too hard" etc. A lot of it seems completely unspoken, yet people who have grown up here immediately understand what is meant.

That makes me wonder about Meghan. She wasn’t just an outsider marrying into the Royal Family. She was American, biracial, divorced, an actress and didn’t come from the British aristocratic/upper-class world albeit privately educated, she is not 'common' at all, I think Catherine Middleton was 'common' in comparison at least according to the tabloids. I genuinely wonder how much of what people interpreted as her being rude, fake, attention-seeking or not understanding British culture was actually her not knowing some of these very British social rules.

And I do think there is sometimes an anti-American element that gets brushed over. Obviously not every British person dislikes Americans, but there is definitely a stereotype of Americans being loud, gauche, overly familiar, obsessed with money/status etc. I’ve experienced enough of it myself to know it exists. I sometimes wonder whether Meghan being American made her an easier target because she didn’t instinctively understand the British way of doing things.

Then there’s the race issue. I’m mixed race myself, but interestingly you wouldn’t necessarily know that just by looking at me. I had blonde hair growing up and have green eyes, and people are always surprised when they meet my parents and then see my siblings and me. So I’m very aware that you can’t necessarily look at someone and know their background.

That’s why some of the discussion around Meghan and her children has always struck me as odd. Her children are very light-skinned and could easily be perceived as white by someone who doesn’t know their family background, but obviously that doesn’t change their ancestry. And whatever anyone thinks about Harry and Meghan, I find the way some people talk about their children completely beyond the pale. They are children. I don't think criticism of their parents should extend to dehumanising or racialised comments about them.
I’m not saying that every criticism of Meghan is racist. I actually think that argument can become too simplistic. People can dislike her for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with race. But I also find it strange when people insist race could not possibly have played any role at all, particularly given some of the very explicit racialised commentary that existed around her.

The other thing I find fascinating is Harry himself. I wonder whether some of the anger towards Meghan is actually partly about what Harry represents. He was essentially presented for years as the cheeky, handsome younger prince and there was this whole fairy-tale idea that an ordinary British woman could marry him. William marrying Kate probably reinforced that to some extent.
Then Harry marries an American woman, leaves the UK and moves to California. And there seems to be a genuine feeling amongst some people that he has personally betrayed the British public. But I struggle to understand that level of emotional investment. He is a person who made decisions about his own marriage and his own life. Why does someone you have never met moving to another country make you so angry?

And this is probably the bit I find most fascinating as an outsider. People will say they don't care about Harry and Meghan, that they're irrelevant, that nobody is interested in them anymore and then seemingly know every single thing they’ve done for the last six years.

So I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing. Is it simply that people think they’re hypocrites and have behaved badly? Is it the way they’ve spoken about the Royal Family? Is it class? Is it anti-American sentiment? Is race a factor? Is it resentment that Harry left? Is it just that they’re particularly irritating to people?
Because I can understand “I dislike Harry and Meghan”. What I find much harder to understand is “I absolutely cannot stand Harry and Meghan” followed by a detailed analysis of everything they’ve done since 2020.
Maybe this is just a cultural difference and I’m completely missing something obvious because I didn’t grow up here.

I do however think that especially wit the fall of the empire, the RF could have used Meghan as an asset but I cannot 100% comment on how that would have worked out I do not know her personally. I only have anecdote from friends in the states who have met them and who lived near them, they were always out and about in the states, a few friends have seen their children many times, those children do not look black at all, so whoever was worried about their race and phenotype can sleep peacefully. Guessing most of the family has met them by now. My own children do not look mixed race at all yet ancestry wise and half their family is African American, traceable to a specific plantation before my mother's family moved to SF. I am mixed race(white father and black mother) but grew up with everyone assuming I am white so many that is where my perspective comes from.

I find the whole thing fascinating? Especially after the whatsapp situation. And for those of you who grew up in the UK, particularly if you have absolutely no connection to the aristocracy or Royal Family, what is it about them that generates such a strong reaction?

I think for QE2, it was the grabby baby shower.

I think it’s mainly three things: the entitlement, the lying and the hypocrisy. Even one of those would be bad but all three together, a lot of people find it hard to take.

Also the over sharing of non existent events...
And the disorganised chaos.. Just look at poor A&L being pulled out of school after two days due to their parents poor planning. The public feel so sorry for the kids due to their parents disorganisation..

I have never genuinely meant this before, but TLDR 🤪

Username7258 · 17/09/2026 23:10

I'm think a lot of people had huge hope that they'd be a genuinely positive part of the royal family and feel quite betrayed they'd act the way they did.

TurquoiseGoldPeaches · 17/09/2026 23:12

Because some twats have nothing better to do than worry about what a bunch of over privileged idiots get up to. Who fecking cares?! It makes no difference to ANYTHING!!!

TurquoiseGoldPeaches · 17/09/2026 23:15

Tabbytiger122 · 17/09/2026 22:17

Yes but Chelsy always fitted right in with Harry's circle of friends etc, I think she was friends went them first as she came to the UK from Zimbabwe to boarding school in her late teens.. he just seemed so comfortable with her... I loved them as a couple & feel like a life working for the crown in Africa would have been wonderful for him
I also liked Cressida a lot but yes she went back to her ex after.

Couldn’t spell her name right though could she?

Are you being serious? Do you genuinely believe British women “hate” Harry (and Meghan) because Harry didn’t marry one of them?🤣

sleepwouldbenice · 18/09/2026 00:26

I didn't read all your post... but on the whole I agree
I think Harry had some bad experiences with the death of his mother and the press and the treatment of Meghan was poor. Shes absolutely not perfect but they were so obviously vile to her. I supported them when they left and I support them over the security level and payment issue and his court cases
The book was crass with no self reflection and the Oprah and other Interviews were dire at best. Jam? Netflix etc are eye rolling

So overall, mixed views

But yes some people have such venom and obsession, especially on this board. Its like a hobby. Its incredulous. Picking holes into absolutely everything
I find it very odd

pizzaHeart · 18/09/2026 00:47

I don’t think people hate them, more like following the drama Some of H& M actions are so obviously stupid that you can’t help noticing them. It’s nothing to do with race or being an actress or anything else e.g what on earth Harry was thinking when he published his book? No brother would tolerate a book like this. So I’m not surprised that William doesn’t.
And I wouldn’t even go into this saga with traffic towards a school being heavy at term time surprisingly.

NatashaGurdin · 18/09/2026 01:47

I think part of the whole gossip industry about them might be the speculation about Harry's father even though the main candidate wasn't near Diana when conception took place and this has been (mostly!) Laid to rest by the publication of photos of the young Philip a while ago who Harry looks very like him especially in photos where they are bearded except Philip was blonde and Harry has red hair from his mother's side. I'm not sure but perhaps it was an intriguing angle for a not particularly interesting couple?especially

OnePlumPlayer · 18/09/2026 05:44

I don't find them fake at all. I am a Californian so maybe it's a cultural thing. They seem much more real than anyone else in the RF to me. They don't have self importance with no humility either. Not at all sure where that comes from. The original post is on to something. California and Britain are very different cultures. Meghan is suffering because she doesn't understand the British culture well. However the lack of an attempt to understand Megan's cultural differences by the RF, especially William and Kate, seem very fake and cruel to me. I mean, I would never treat my brother-in-law or sister-in-law that way and they actually were raised in other countries, not the US. Perhaps Harry said some inflammatory things in interviews and books but he clearly was mistreated and has had a lot of emotional pain. One would think his brother would care and go to therapy with him. He champions mental health causes but dismisses his own brother's mental pain and adds to it.

I don't care about them that much but they are interesting. I personally find Harry and Meghan much more interesting, resilient and good hearted than anyone else in the RF. Really people need to acknowledge that the media is making a huge profit off of the constant negative press coverage and most is likely made up or exaggerated. From the more reliable news source, they seem like good people trying to make their way in the world and raise their kids well.

I don't agree with you at all. Chelsy is Africian, from Zimbabwe & she had no problem culturally fitting in with the royal family, Kate, William etc.
You say H&M have no self importance? They left the royal family to become private citizens, so do nothing at all for us , yet expect is taxpayers to fund their security 🤔
The way Meghan spoke about Kate is unforgivable, the way Harry spoke about William is unable. I am delighted to see K&W give them a wife berth.
Meghan & Harry are no longer working royals , they are private citizens & entitled to none of the perks of being working royals.
King Charles letter last week was a masterpiece! Reminding them not to get notions able their station!

Because a hugely priviledged man has had all the benefits of a gilded upbringing, money, opportunities, freedoms that most of us can only dream of.

Then he turned his back on all of it, accused his family and the UK of ill-treating him, aired his extremely personal family resentments on an American talk show and publshed a spiteful and grubby book, just to cash in some more on his gilded upbringing.

And now the Americans are bored of him, he's come back to the UK, and expects us all to pay for unnecessary security, and welcome him home like a prodigal son.

His behaviour has, from start to finish, been self-pitying, distasteful, vulgar and greedy.

If he had just moved his family quietly into a Cotswold farmhouse, kept his mouth shut and sent his dcs to a discreet private school, all of this nonsense would have been avoided.

KittyTinker · 18/09/2026 06:40

I’m not sure you can call it a cultural thing when the most high profile figures to criticise them have been American. The Spotify guy who called them Grifters. Justine Bateman calling them disaster tourists, late night comedy shows news paper journalists even whole shows like South Park and Family Guy not to mention the President Donald Trump. I would have thought it would be more important to ask why these movers and shakers dislike them so much.

Surely the most reliable news source is the couple themselves, who come across pretty awfully imo. Cannot get over Meghan posing with seriously ill children then posting the photos with links where fans could buy her outfit. And then doing it again with survivors of an anti semitic terrorist atrocity. Pretending the website was all about crediting designers when really she had a stake in it and was making money from every sale. Repulsive.

Exactly Ham have made millions upon millions from commercial endeavours, they have more than enough to cover their own private security.
But being the grifters they are they didn't want to work for the taxpayers but yet still expect us to pay for their security & that of their kids

BunnyBunbunbun · 18/09/2026 06:59

Go watch the Oprah interview, and also ponder why Americans don't seem to like them very much.

CrazyMidget · 18/09/2026 07:07

It’s because they’ve been so, so horrible. Not hard to work out. The RF gave them everything: a fab wedding, a very grand home was offered to them - a wing of Kensington Palace - a title and HRH was given to Meghan, and she had all the clothes and jewels she could ever dream of. They turned down the chance to have a home every bit as grand as William and Kate’s, all because Meghan got on so badly with William and Kate, who are famously nice and normal.

So, in addition to being nasty to W and K, they were absolutely horrible to the Queen and Prince Philip, doing that Oprah interview when he was dying. They made the Queen’s last couple of years a misery with all their tell-all plans being in the works - books and Netflix etc. (It was all being reported while the Queen was still alive.)

They accused Kate and Charles of being racist (according to that Dutch leak of Harry’s book Spare) and before that, made the same claim about the royals but refused to say who it was. That was despicable. Racism is an extremely serious accusation and it should not be made without proof.

Even though the king is still in cancer treatment and Kate had a serious cancer (it’s always serious if you need chemo), they continue to put Kate, Charles, and William under tremendous stress. Harry completely betrayed William in every way and made the hell he went through with Kate’s illness a million times harder.

They have kept both grandfathers away from their children, which is despicable.

AND, to top it all off, Meghan is so cruel that she wouldn’t visit her father EVEN WHEN HIS LEG WAS AMPUTATED!

They are profoundly, breathtakingly nasty. THAT’s why.

Twatterati · 18/09/2026 07:11

I agree it was a lot to do with being American, actress, “commoner” and mixed race.

I also think that Princess Catherine didn’t like her personally, felt threatened and was worried about being compared and upstaged.

Too many other people think Catherine must be a wonderful person, based on her being slim, pretty and getting decent PR.

I imagine she can be a right bitch.

CoffeeCantata · 18/09/2026 07:13

OP - where have you been hiding since 2020? That's like someone saying 'What's Boris Johnson done to make people dislike him so much?"

That's all I've got - but Lord, it's been gone into exhaustively on here.

My question is why were none of her extended family at the wedding?? No one for Doria's side. Remember the image of poor Doria sat alone in the Church. No invite for her half brother or sister or none of the Markle side.
Yet she invited the Clooneys who said they didn't know her before then.
Why did she have none of her family at the wedding? It says enough about her & serious red flags..

They cause strong reactions in USA - I have come across some outrages things posted by Americans.

British feel defensive as she did publicly criticise the head of state. They also really don’t want to pay for their security after everything that’s been said and done.

The WhatsApp message leak - that surprised me. It’s not a British thing to do, but i guess it was a useful warning to Meghan prior texting anything more private/ revealing.
