Why do Harry and Meghan provoke such strong reactions in Britain?

Hello!
I’m genuinely posting this because I’m curious about people’s perspectives rather than wanting to argue. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if there’s an unnecessary pile-on I probably won’t respond. This is also just my personal experience as someone who didn’t grow up in the UK, rather than me claiming any particular expertise on British culture.

Anyway, I’ve always found the level of hatred towards Harry and Meghan really fascinating. I completely understand not liking them. I understand people thinking they’re hypocritical, disliking the Oprah interview, the Netflix series, Harry’s book etc. If someone thinks “I just don’t like them”, fair enough. What I find interesting is the sheer intensity of it and how many people seem to genuinely care about what they’re doing years later.

For context, I grew up in the US, SF to be specific, so very liberal maybe that's why. I have friends from school still in the states who have seen H and M lots with their children just doing everyday activities and no one cares, there's people I know who have met them and have spoken to them many times so to see the tabloids is quite interesting to see the juxtaposition. My dad is British and my mum is American and mixed race. I went to private school in the States and grew up extremely privileged, although obviously the American class system is quite different to the British one. I came to England for university and ended up staying, partly because I have family here.

Even with that background, I find the British class system fascinating. There seem to be all these very subtle distinctions around accent, school, family, manners, where you live, how you dress, whether you're "posh", "common", "trying too hard" etc. A lot of it seems completely unspoken, yet people who have grown up here immediately understand what is meant.

That makes me wonder about Meghan. She wasn’t just an outsider marrying into the Royal Family. She was American, biracial, divorced, an actress and didn’t come from the British aristocratic/upper-class world albeit privately educated, she is not 'common' at all, I think Catherine Middleton was 'common' in comparison at least according to the tabloids. I genuinely wonder how much of what people interpreted as her being rude, fake, attention-seeking or not understanding British culture was actually her not knowing some of these very British social rules.

And I do think there is sometimes an anti-American element that gets brushed over. Obviously not every British person dislikes Americans, but there is definitely a stereotype of Americans being loud, gauche, overly familiar, obsessed with money/status etc. I’ve experienced enough of it myself to know it exists. I sometimes wonder whether Meghan being American made her an easier target because she didn’t instinctively understand the British way of doing things.

Then there’s the race issue. I’m mixed race myself, but interestingly you wouldn’t necessarily know that just by looking at me. I had blonde hair growing up and have green eyes, and people are always surprised when they meet my parents and then see my siblings and me. So I’m very aware that you can’t necessarily look at someone and know their background.

That’s why some of the discussion around Meghan and her children has always struck me as odd. Her children are very light-skinned and could easily be perceived as white by someone who doesn’t know their family background, but obviously that doesn’t change their ancestry. And whatever anyone thinks about Harry and Meghan, I find the way some people talk about their children completely beyond the pale. They are children. I don't think criticism of their parents should extend to dehumanising or racialised comments about them.
I’m not saying that every criticism of Meghan is racist. I actually think that argument can become too simplistic. People can dislike her for plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with race. But I also find it strange when people insist race could not possibly have played any role at all, particularly given some of the very explicit racialised commentary that existed around her.

The other thing I find fascinating is Harry himself. I wonder whether some of the anger towards Meghan is actually partly about what Harry represents. He was essentially presented for years as the cheeky, handsome younger prince and there was this whole fairy-tale idea that an ordinary British woman could marry him. William marrying Kate probably reinforced that to some extent.
Then Harry marries an American woman, leaves the UK and moves to California. And there seems to be a genuine feeling amongst some people that he has personally betrayed the British public. But I struggle to understand that level of emotional investment. He is a person who made decisions about his own marriage and his own life. Why does someone you have never met moving to another country make you so angry?

And this is probably the bit I find most fascinating as an outsider. People will say they don't care about Harry and Meghan, that they're irrelevant, that nobody is interested in them anymore and then seemingly know every single thing they’ve done for the last six years.

So I’m genuinely curious what I’m missing. Is it simply that people think they’re hypocrites and have behaved badly? Is it the way they’ve spoken about the Royal Family? Is it class? Is it anti-American sentiment? Is race a factor? Is it resentment that Harry left? Is it just that they’re particularly irritating to people?
Because I can understand “I dislike Harry and Meghan”. What I find much harder to understand is “I absolutely cannot stand Harry and Meghan” followed by a detailed analysis of everything they’ve done since 2020.
Maybe this is just a cultural difference and I’m completely missing something obvious because I didn’t grow up here.

I do however think that especially wit the fall of the empire, the RF could have used Meghan as an asset but I cannot 100% comment on how that would have worked out I do not know her personally. I only have anecdote from friends in the states who have met them and who lived near them, they were always out and about in the states, a few friends have seen their children many times, those children do not look black at all, so whoever was worried about their race and phenotype can sleep peacefully. Guessing most of the family has met them by now. My own children do not look mixed race at all yet ancestry wise and half their family is African American, traceable to a specific plantation before my mother's family moved to SF. I am mixed race(white father and black mother) but grew up with everyone assuming I am white so many that is where my perspective comes from.

I find the whole thing fascinating? Especially after the whatsapp situation. And for those of you who grew up in the UK, particularly if you have absolutely no connection to the aristocracy or Royal Family, what is it about them that generates such a strong reaction?

Some of it will be racism but they are also a pair of whiny priviliged brats who treat the Uk public like idiots
MM seems like a basically decent person but she had no idea what she was getting into and misjudged everything before throwing many many tantrums
H seems like an entitled pratt with a chip on his shoulder despite being afforded everything he could have wished for. I am sure losing his Mum affected him badly but Diana wasn't exactly parent of the year either and if H could have found someone to steady him like William did rather than someone who fed the drama/his narrative then it would have been easier for him
Thats just my take on it for what its worth

ginasevern · 18/09/2026 14:40

I think Harry had every right to publish his thoughts on his life within the RF. Nobody put Charles in the village stocks when he moaned his privileged little head off about his parents' neglect and coldness. The whole family are a dysfunctional, largely inbred anomaly. And many of them are not very nice people at all.

SleepingisanArt · 18/09/2026 14:47

I have never watched Suits. I had no idea who MM was prior to the engagement etc. I had no idea she was 'mixed race' as she looks quite Mediterranean to me. But being mixed race is a non issue. It's her attitude and his too. She refused help from Sophie and Princess Anne to adjust to life in the Royal family and by all accounts it takes work to understand... She thought she could accept and keep lavish gifts and she thought she was more important than she was. There are many stories of her cruelty to staff and Harry even said 'what Meghan wants Meghan gets'. He was loved as a 'cheeky chap' prior to MM but turned into an entitled moaning minnie. He has said things which should have remained private and that was totally hypocritical as he was the one banging on about wanting privacy.

They want us to believe they are hard done by having to live in a huge mansion with staff and risk their lives taking their children to school. Meanwhile normal people are worried about if they have enough money to get to the end of the month without going overdrawn. They are tone deaf and live in cloud cuckoo land.

Echobelly · 18/09/2026 14:52

Because the establishment is furious he married an America commoner, and a black one no less, and knew it would sell papers to set up this big rivalry between them and Kate and William. So they monster them as much as possible on flimsy evidence to sell papers and people go for it.

I have no idea whether they are nice or nasty, I don't know them and don't particularly care, but the media seem determined to be utterly partisan against them to an almost cartoonish degree, which makes me tend to distrust that they are anything like as bad as they are painted.

AprilMizzel · 18/09/2026 14:57

Women who marry in always seem to get love then attacked - all of them - especially if not royal themselves. It's not a new thing either - Eleanor Cobham back in 1400 suffered for it. Some of the men do as well but never to the same extent at least not in modern times.

Then there's behavior - comments made about country, insitutions and - lots of provable lies - ungreatful for UK taxpayer doing security bills, rumours from many quarters about bullying. My personal turning wtf point was the tour in African country where in midst of terrible suffering Megahn complained no one was asking how she was - wtf - with Harry it was Spare.

Then there the self importance - very unbritish in itself and not understanding Harry place in RF - and that it's not as high as they seem to think.

Then there the very poor PR - if they went quiet fuss would die down but they seem to always poor fuel onto the fire. They've also picked fights with UK media outlets in courts and leak or do interviews with others.

Then there the making money - many minor RF members do this - but they do not hit the headlines doing so and if they do it's also seen as bad - and they do not trash the rest of RF when doing so.

They are seen as minor celbes who've bad mouthed this country and are very entitled - most of the population really do not care - laugh when they hit the headlines - moan about they trying to get secuirty for free and beyond that do not give them any headspace.

fridaynightzzz · 18/09/2026 14:58

@Echobellythere was a lot of rivalry in the press between Fergie and Di.

I think generally people and ‘the establishment’ were happy he was getting married finally.

AprilMizzel · 18/09/2026 15:15

I've seen some US you tuber talk about RF and how the British do not seem to be thinking of them very much at all which they find odd - that they'll start conversation about them and they'll get disinterest mostly.

Their iconography is back ground noise - on money, on stamps or post boxes odd building - they appear in press - but they are just in background doing something and then every so often we seem to care. I've seen american historian moan about all the kings and queens but I find them a useful road map/anchor point to roughtly in a short hand ay understand when that was - so food and clothing and general poltics and what else was happening in country and world that a date doesn't convey as well to me.

The media and papers do seem to love reporting on Harry and Meghan because they shift papers and everyone like to read what outragous shit they've done now and laugh or moan about it for five minutes before moving on with life. Currently Charles Spencer and King are doing that bit of can you belive they did that or do you belive it.

My question is why were none of her extended family at the wedding?? No one for Doria's side. Remember the image of poor Doria sat alone in the Church. No invite for her half brother or sister or none of the Markle side.
Yet she invited the Clooneys who said they didn't know her before then.
Why did she have none of her family at the wedding? It says enough about her & serious red flags..

I agree it was a lot to do with being American, actress, “commoner” and mixed race.

I also think that Princess Catherine didn’t like her personally, felt threatened and was worried about being compared and upstaged.

Too many other people think Catherine must be a wonderful person, based on her being slim, pretty and getting decent PR.

I imagine she can be a right bitch.

This is one of the nastiest comments I’ve seen on here.

You think C is “ a right bitch”? Nice!

Meghan hated C even before she met her. She bitched about her wedding on her blog in 2012.

She had C in her sights from the first, because she had to defer to her(M HAS to be first, front and centre. . She pushed Dr Sophie around too, at her own event!

But the killer was that H adored Catherine and M wasn’t having that. She must be dealt with!

Still no explanation from that PP for the comment about the PoW, even though I asked quite a while ago what it was based on.
I mean, I can think of a few things to criticise her for but she doesn’t seem remotely bitchy to me 🤷‍♀️

Like you, I’m sure shes no angel (Who is?) but nothing has ever come out to suggest she’s bitchy. In fact she was badly bullied at school. I think I know who might have done the witchery , and it’s not Catherine!

I like what I see of Catherine and I think she fulfills her role very well. If I had to say something negative (and it’s just a feeling - I have no evidence);I’d imagine she might be slightly dull, but that’s a very mild criticism in my book!

I wish her well after all she’s been through.

According to Tom Bower (Hes a lawyer and they’ve never sued him…) the RF didn’t want Doria to sit in isolation, but M insisted. I remember thinking

  • how awful for her to be so alone and
  • later, when they left the chapel and Charles and various royals tried to engage her in conversation, she remained stony-faced and didn’t respond with equal warmth (not making this up - I remember feeling disappointed, as if Charles lovely gestures towards both her and Meghan hadn’t been received well for some reason).
Tom Bower believes that Doria was under instruction not to talk to the royals- and also, she must have known how it would look, for the world to see her sitting alone. Was this another ploy to make the RF look bad?

Bower also says that the Middletons invited Meghan more than once, and Doria at the time of the wedding, to stay with them, but all invitations were refused.
