The royal family

Do you think some of you are addicted to hating Harry and Meghan?

More and more these manic threads are popping up on mumsnet, wild posts and theories and then hundreds of posts brimming with excitement about catching them out or exposing them. It’s like a game or a hunt. Have many of you crossed the line from interested to addicted?

I mean put out unintentionally (e.g. the Ring doorbell) as well as put out intentionally (the BBC interview).

Not that the discussions are intentional/ unintentional!

There are loads of posters that plop and drop threads on here because they know they’ll get a reaction. Mumsnet probably love them for the traffic they generate. The “addiction” to posting about M and H that the OP mentions helps Mumsnet.

It's a lucrative industry.

Tbrh · 12/05/2025 01:26

I think deranged and obsessed are better descriptors

Thecatsatonthemats · 12/05/2025 01:29

It’s like a non stop entertainment show. They are the ones putting on the show. If they weren’t, no one would care. They make themselves utterly ridiculous all by themselves and so it is amusing to watch and comment on. No hate, just disbelief at their antics and fascination. For anyone interested in psychology and human behaviour there is so much material it’s never dull.

Aren't they a bit like the Kardashians, out there hawking their goods for money, more fame, recognition, whatever it is they seem to be looking for.

It's just a different iteration of the likes of the Kardashians or a Housewives franchise. Look on any forum discussion around the Kardashians or a Housewives episode and you will read similar kind of commentary as you do about Meghan and Harry. They all have massive publicity machines behind them feeding the media.

Harry and Meghan bring it all to the table, but with a unique Royal flavour, family feuds, influencing to make a stash of cash, gushy gushy friendships, cosmetic surgery, designer clothes, little kids included in the bandwagon, none of them with any real job but plenty of money, aspirational lifestyle with private jets, mega mansions, an army of staff, and in the case of Harry and Meghan, the icing on the cake being Royal titles from the most prestigious Monarchy on the planet.

Its a great spectacle for the viewer, its there to be discussed, ridiculed, fawned over, discuss what will happen next, what already happened, what did Kim (Meghan) do to her face, why is she being so rude to her husband, why is he such a wet blanket etc etc.

Its a reality soap show and Harry and Meghan seem to be very happy to oblige with content.

Good points.

Lyannaa · 12/05/2025 07:13

Yes. It’s a phenomena not only seen on Mumsnet and it’s bizarre to me. I’m not interested in them, what they do or hating them. It’s boring.

I absolutely get this-personally that’s what the RF is for. I would be delighted if it disappeared tomorrow, but while we have to have it, I want entertainment from it. I want them to wear amazing clothes, fabulous jewels, drive gold carriages, have babies, be a living soap opera. What I DON’T get is the language used about H&M. The Jeremy Clarkson thing was obviously extreme, but he only thought he could get away with it because we were used to appalling things being said. And while obviously nobody on here would say anything like that, things are said that are eyebrow raising to say the least. People seem genuinely angry. Why not just laugh at the absurdity of it all-eat the bread and watch the circus?

FenellaFeldman · 12/05/2025 07:53

@CurlewKate nobody decent would defend Clarkson. He's a man who's got away with this sort of behaviour for too long.
The problem with H&M is that they've opened the sluice gates. They have made money from selling gossip and intimate details about the RF, they have been professional critics, yet lived, and continue to live, very well by dint of being royal.
They want to be high profile celebrities, they want to live royal lives, yet claim all manner of negativity associated with the RF. I think that's the problem, really. I don't care about Meghan's silly IG posts, but Harry is actually being what I would consider to be the worst of royalty; he is arrogant, petulant, entitled and complaining that he's not treated royally enough.

And yet here you are.

There are any number of MN topics I find boring, so I don't read them or comment on them. It's a simple solution, but it works!

Yes, I get that. What I don’t get is why some people seem so very, and consistently angry about it. And why it seems OK to use extreme language about them.

Right. I don't think it's ever ok to use extreme language about people. I also dislike the "unhinged" and "addicted" labels used on here about H&M critics, so that's a general point, I would feel. I saw some fairly robust criticism of Harry following his latest interview, but, tbh, he is hardly a measured, decent or reflective person.
I suspect, given the modus vivandi of both H&M, that this will run and run.

When MHHQ calls posters on this board deranged, I don’t think they’re going to have a problem with words like addicted.

Just checking back to see what I have missed since I posted last night and I see there have been some overnight/early morning deletions.

I haven't seen where MNHQ called people "deranged". What a horrible word to use. That's actually quite shocked me. Delete if necessary, but name call?
Have you got a link?

Justine said it in an interview with the Telegraph. I tried to find it but the telegraph interview is behind a paywall. She definitely said it and it was discussed at length on mumsnet at the time. Here is a thread about it

Justine has called anti-Meghan sentiment here deranged | Mumsnet

In the Telegraph today got to be worth a thread of its own. She is of course right !

I’m still hoping someone will link to a thread that is “gushing” about H&M!

Thank you. I don't think name calling is helpful, ever. However, I do notice that this is some years ago.

And I'm back hoping for a reply to my questions to OP. Has OP been back...at all?

I can't take seriously an OP who fires off a goady question (complete with OTT insults) and then disappears. It just confirms my suspicion that they haven't actually got any answers to the valid points people are raising here...or that a genuine answer to the OP wasn't the objective! 😁

Just to clarify because posters always quote this incorrectly as a gotcha.
justine never said posters were “deranged “ , as if she would insult her own posters publicly!

what she actually said was “ the discussion around h and m gets a bit deranged at times “

so the “ discussion “ not posters and she also never specifically stated whether that was criticism or fans discussions .

so let’s not keep peddling false narratives shall we?

Agree - clearly she meant that feelings run exceptionally high on both sides of the matter. On both sides, OP!

Wakey, wakey OP! Can you hear me? I've thought of something else...

I guess my urge to argue about the H & M issue. To me, H & M's doings/speeches/output in terms of interviews/books/documentaries etc is like listening to someone on a soapbox at Hyde Park Corner, telling us that the world is flat and that Darwin was wrong and the world WAS created in 7 days. I can't just leave the lies, propaganda and ignorance there (to say nothing of the blatant hypocrisy). I have to challenge it. Most of the time it's like playing chess with pigeons...but it's the principle. You can't let people get away with talking rubbish!

jeffgoldblum · 12/05/2025 09:22

Ah, Meghan and Harry,” says Mumsnet founder Justine Roberts, 55, wearily. “The reaction to them actually reminds me of the Madeleine McCann story. People have extraordinarily strong and vitriolic views, way more powerful than I would expect. They are so strongly anti-Meghan we’ve had to do what we did with Madeleine McCann and cobble it into one topic because it seems slightly deranged. Ninety per cent of our content is incredibly supportive, but attention is drawn to the controversial topics, which are very active because people have very strong feelings.”

this is exactly what she said!
you will note that a single topic for Meghan was removed quite a long time ago.

Yes. She was in essence saying they are very marmite and both sides can go a bit crazy and some definitely go too far.

You have the likes of Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan on one side, and the Sussex Squad on the other. Most are a happy medium in between where we can have nice debates like this without too many people getting upset.
