The Guardian: Prince Harry at 40

Somewhat more even-keeled coverage of Prince Harry at 40 from Caroline Davies at The Guardian.

Arguably understated quite a few of Harry's recent achievements, eg Spare being the 2023 Nr 1 UK bestseller, or the phenomenal growth of Harry's Invictus Games which will now have 25 countries participating in Whistler/Vancouver February 2025. Little or no mention of the numerous awards Harry has won, eg most recently his ESPY Pat Tilman Award for Service and being named a Living Legend of Aviation, etc.

Anyway, nice to see an attempt at painting a more balanced, perhaps less hysterically rabidly negative picture...

Enjoy!

Prince Harry at 40: the difference a decade has made to the duke’s life

Living among film stars and estranged from his father and brother, Harry’s milestone birthday may bring moment of reflection

A huge chunk of southern California is burning. People are facing homelessness and dead pets and no jobs as their communities burn. The smoke will make it difficult to breath for days. The wildlife is facing certain death.

Yet the H & M PR machine chugs on. No one gives a damn about H 's birthday or his inheritance. Talk about not being able to read the room.

I wish Harry a lovely birthday.

I'll be glad when it's over and the stream of articles slacks off a bit though.

For a supposedly Republican paper The Guardian really liked going for clicks on royal stories.

Hoopper · 14/09/2024 19:31

I agree its balanced - but doesn't paint him in any particularly positive light.

Topseyt123 · 14/09/2024 19:38

It may be a controversial view, but I do quite like Harry.

Polls would suggest not.

Because their PR have been pushing the narrative. Is Harry that desperate to return? I thought they were happy in thd US and living their best life. The 36% is slightly disingenuous though. Technically correct I suppose, but 25% to 34% isn't exactly a 'huge rise'. And as you pointed out, polls show the views of people who were asked the question, no-one else.

Washingupdone · 14/09/2024 23:24

I am not a fan of Harry, he made his grandmother suffer cruelly. He made certain comments in his book and film regarding his family’s wealth and how they came by it. Now he has inherited some of this tainted money maybe he should give it all to the people of today whose ancestors unfortunately suffered in the past.

forevernumb · 15/09/2024 10:20

It will be interesting to hear what he does with this money! Give it in reparations to the Commonwealth?

A bit like the tainted titles of the repugnant institution they had to flee from and continued to berate for years across global media - why insist on using them and ensuring their DCs have them?

$$$$$$$

Have H&M sent birthday wishes to C, C, W & C over the past 5 years?

myrtleWilson · 15/09/2024 11:18

Am not sure William has been scrolling through insta and saw the RF's post so added it to stories! The comms for the 40th birthday would have been agreed between the royal households before today!!

Yes it is so dreary and wearing when you have a toxic family member and you have to take account what they might do or say either way.

Mylovelygreendress · 15/09/2024 14:10

Compared to the effusive messages and gallery of photos posted on William’s 40th , Harry’s is very bland.,

skullbabe · 15/09/2024 15:09

That’s a really even keeled article - thanks for sharing @TallerSally

MrsLeonFarrell · 15/09/2024 16:13

The Sunday Times has a large article today on Harry. At one point an "expert" said the King would wish him Happy Birthday on social media but William definitely wouldn't.

So much for the "experts". Again.

Bryony Gordon has been saying a bunch of nice things about Prince Harry over at the Daily Fail (why???). I won't be linking that, so here's People's account of it instead.

"The Duke of Sussex will turn the milestone age on Sept. 15, and Bryony Gordon of the Daily Mail is speaking out about her friend ahead of his big day, calling him “pretty damn normal.”
Gordon wrote that she became friends with the royal about eight years ago, “and ever since, life has been peppered with questions from people curious to know more about his character,” she wrote in a piece published Sept. 12.
“And when I tell them my honest opinion, that he is kind, funny and pretty damn normal, all things considered, I often see a flash of disappointment cloud their faces, followed quickly by words to the effect of ‘well, you would say that, you know him,’ as if knowing someone should disqualify you from having a trusted opinion about them,” she continued.
She added, “I’ve heard a lot of fairly negative things said about him, character assassinations that bear no resemblance to the man I’ve come to count as a friend, the one who cares passionately about injured veterans, and who’s done more than most to change perceptions of mental health in this country,” referring to the UK.

Of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a couple, Gordon described them as “a pretty ordinary couple existing in an absolutely extraordinary situation,” she wrote. “There are no airs or graces with them, no desire to do anything other than protect their children from an increasingly digital world that likes nothing more than seeing the worst in people. A world that forgets that no matter how high profile a person is, they’re just doing their best, like everyone else.”
She added, “This is not what people want to hear, but it is what I’ve found, time and time again.”

Prince Harry Is ‘Pretty Damn Normal, All Things Considered,’ According to Friend

Ahead of his 40th birthday on Sept. 15, Prince Harry’s friend and journalist Bryony Gordon writes that the Duke of Sussex is “pretty damn normal,” and he and Meghan Markle are a “pretty ordinary couple.”

This is pretty funny:

"Britain’s royal family has publicly wished Prince Harry a happy birthday, their first such message since 2021 to mark the milestone of him turning 40.
A post was shared on X and Instagram with the message: “Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!”
It was accompanied by an image of Harry smiling, and a birthday cake emoji.

An hour later, the post was shared by Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, who added their own message: “Wishing a Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Sussex!”
The public well-wishes could come as a surprise with Harry known to be estranged from his brother and having difficult ties with his father, King Charles III."

Some folks must be apoplectic!

She's now a columnist over there I think - apparently that fact hasn't sullied her relationship with H though! I, for one, remain forever grateful for Bryony sharing the monogrammed doormat to the world - thanks taller
