The Guardian: Prince Harry at 40

Somewhat more even-keeled coverage of Prince Harry at 40 from Caroline Davies at The Guardian.

Arguably understated quite a few of Harry's recent achievements, eg Spare being the 2023 Nr 1 UK bestseller, or the phenomenal growth of Harry's Invictus Games which will now have 25 countries participating in Whistler/Vancouver February 2025. Little or no mention of the numerous awards Harry has won, eg most recently his ESPY Pat Tilman Award for Service and being named a Living Legend of Aviation, etc.

Anyway, nice to see an attempt at painting a more balanced, perhaps less hysterically rabidly negative picture...

Enjoy!

Prince Harry at 40: the difference a decade has made to the duke’s life

Living among film stars and estranged from his father and brother, Harry’s milestone birthday may bring moment of reflection

"Some folks must be apoplectic"

Who is that?

Americanpseudoroyaltorture · 15/09/2024 20:41

Not apoplectic at all. It was a superb move. You can almost hear the tabloids having to rip up their tedious "royal snub" copy. And to use a picture from a 2018 visit to Ireland, where Meghan's behaviour was said to have been quite unpleasant (including giving a death stare to a small child) is priceless. The internet chatterboxes have gone down that rabbit hole and are having a good old chortle. Well played, BP.

Bryony Gordon has been saying a bunch of nice things about Prince Harry over at the Daily Fail (why???). I won't be linking that, so here's People's account of it instead.

"The Duke of Sussex will turn the milestone age on Sept. 15, and Bryony Gordon of the Daily Mail is speaking out about her friend ahead of his big day, calling him “pretty damn normal.”
Gordon wrote that she became friends with the royal about eight years ago, “and ever since, life has been peppered with questions from people curious to know more about his character,” she wrote in a piece published Sept. 12.
“And when I tell them my honest opinion, that he is kind, funny and pretty damn normal, all things considered, I often see a flash of disappointment cloud their faces, followed quickly by words to the effect of ‘well, you would say that, you know him,’ as if knowing someone should disqualify you from having a trusted opinion about them,” she continued.
She added, “I’ve heard a lot of fairly negative things said about him, character assassinations that bear no resemblance to the man I’ve come to count as a friend, the one who cares passionately about injured veterans, and who’s done more than most to change perceptions of mental health in this country,” referring to the UK.

Of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as a couple, Gordon described them as “a pretty ordinary couple existing in an absolutely extraordinary situation,” she wrote. “There are no airs or graces with them, no desire to do anything other than protect their children from an increasingly digital world that likes nothing more than seeing the worst in people. A world that forgets that no matter how high profile a person is, they’re just doing their best, like everyone else.”
She added, “This is not what people want to hear, but it is what I’ve found, time and time again.”

I read the article by Bryony too - again really enjoyed it and thought it well written.

The Sunday Times has a large article today on Harry. At one point an "expert" said the King would wish him Happy Birthday on social media but William definitely wouldn't.

So much for the "experts". Again.

Yes! All the experts who make £££££ writing rubbish!

And all the speculators on sm who seem to get a thrill from being as nasty as possible!

skullbabe · 16/09/2024 07:42

Some folks must be apoplectic!

I’ve seen a few of them the people who earn good money from their social media accounts from being anti Sussex struggle with it. And as another poster said - it has also meant that the tabloid media would need to rewrite and rejig snub and mea culpa spreads which would be good for a good click through rate.

MrsFinkelstein · 16/09/2024 07:45

Polite family are polite to estranged family member on milestone birthday.

Not much to get "apoplectic" about.

Still, anything to distract from the fallout from The Hollywood Reporter.

Hazeby · 16/09/2024 07:52

Love Prince Harry. Happy Birthday!

PoppysAunt · 16/09/2024 07:55

a pretty ordinary couple
I think that's a fair point. The status, wealth and privilege comes from Harry's titles. Otherwise, where would they be?

I have to say the past 24hrs have been just hilarious.

After gearing-up for their usual bleating on about "BRUTAL SNUBS", the Brutish/Murdoch/far-right media and their SM disciples have been rather embarrassingly wrong-footed... by the RF themselves!

The Independent even has an article entitled "Harry at 40 might miss Britain, but the uncomfortable truth is we may miss him more", even though I haven't been able to access it on my trusty factiva.

The subheading reads:
"A decade ago he launched his greatest project and was adored by his father and brother, but 10 years later things couldn’t be more different. While Harry insists he is growing into the man he wants to be, Tessa Dunlop argues that his family misses his presence whether they want to or not"

It doesn't take much to fast-forward a couple of years and see where this could be going: a RF love-fest reunion at Invictus Birmingham 2027? (you read it hear fist). 😂

By that point a lot of haters will be left holding their... appendages... in their hands, and looking for another money-spinning gig... or hobby to fill their days...

LAUGH.OUT.LOUD!

Yes, I agree, there's a comedy value with Harry. He's so foolish, so arrogant and lacking self awareness.

I would say it's quite the opposite. Everyone knows that it means flick all but it is a way to avoid " poor Harry they didn't wish him Happy Birthday " tales. Are Sussex supporters really seeing this as a victory ? They must be pretty dense if they do.

Tessa Dunlop? The woman who takes money to be abused by Piers Morgan every week? Who recently implied Catherine was making things up about her cancer experience. Who a couple of months ago was absolutely adamant that Harry was making a documentary about Africa with Netflix. That Tessa Dunlop?

PoppysAunt · 16/09/2024 12:31

That's a good suggestion! 😂

... Love this one of Harry and Meghan having the most AWFUL time at a charity event last weekend, being, as usual, absolutely SHUNNED by celebrities including Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott, Zooey Deschanel, Zach Braff and Meghan's friend and former Suits costar Abigail Spencer etc etc. Clearly, they must have PAID to get the invite to the event, just as the paid the RF to send Harry birthday wishes yesterday.

All this PAYING!!!

😂😂😆

Prince Harry Spends 40th Birthday Weekend with Meghan Markle at Charity Tennis Tournament in Los Angeles

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle attended the George Zajfen Tennis Tournament in Los Angeles on Sept. 14, an event benefiting the Alliance for Children's Rights, amid the Duke of Sussex's 40th birthday weekend.

The "Brutish/Murdoch/far-right media" (sic).
Would that be the same "Brutish" media that they're happy to leak to, especially the Daily Mail, according to their latest, now gone "Head of Global Communications"?
Strange that.

PoppysAunt · 16/09/2024 12:37

"All this PAYING"!
That's their modus vivendi. Getting the dosh. I don't know if those people paid to go, but the Sussexes have to hawk themselves somehow until the next tell-all comes out. Jam ain't gonna do it.

Also didn't know Murdoch, the "Brutish Media" or any permutation thereof had bought up the Hollywood Reporter.

Oh, they haven't.

How odd! How inexplicable! A publication not from the Murdoch stable being critical?!
How very Brutish of them.

Yes, they literally did pay. Archewell was a sponsor, you can see their logo on the board where people are posing for photos.

PoppysAunt · 16/09/2024 12:43

Of course they did.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 16/09/2024 12:48

Didn’t they send Meghan birthday wishes for her 40th or have I remembered incorrectly ? If so, most people would have expected birthday greetings for Harry’s 40th too.
