The Guardian: Prince Harry at 40

Somewhat more even-keeled coverage of Prince Harry at 40 from Caroline Davies at The Guardian.

Arguably understated quite a few of Harry's recent achievements, eg Spare being the 2023 Nr 1 UK bestseller, or the phenomenal growth of Harry's Invictus Games which will now have 25 countries participating in Whistler/Vancouver February 2025. Little or no mention of the numerous awards Harry has won, eg most recently his ESPY Pat Tilman Award for Service and being named a Living Legend of Aviation, etc.

Anyway, nice to see an attempt at painting a more balanced, perhaps less hysterically rabidly negative picture...

Enjoy!

Prince Harry at 40: the difference a decade has made to the duke’s life

Living among film stars and estranged from his father and brother, Harry’s milestone birthday may bring moment of reflection

Very weird that he's doing all the things on his own, no? Trying to put some distance, striking out on his own.

… and this one covers the (impressive) achievements of this year’s Diana Award recipients, Chiara Riyanti Hutapea Zhang, 18, of Indonesia, and Christina Williams, 27, of Jamaica.

Bravo to them! 👏

Bit rude of him not to remain standing while they came into the stage ... followed by the usual word salad of nonsense that comes out. I'm sure they throw a bundle of words onto the table and place them in any order. All sounds the same and there is no meaning coming out of them. Sure there's a game like that.

ThePoshUns · 24/09/2024 07:11

Yes he loves to talk about 'pushing the dial'. What does that even mean?

Sunsetand · 24/09/2024 07:15

Yes he loves to talk about 'pushing the dial'. What does that even mean?

It means to push beyond limits.

Yes he loves to talk about 'pushing the dial'. What does that even mean?

It means he's channelling his inner Nigel Tufnel and dialling it up to eleven. In Dobly.

Bontonbonbon · 24/09/2024 07:23

I hadn’t even considered a ‘dead cat’ PR strategy. I almost doubt that’s what’s happening because they don’t have a great track record of listening to others advice and I doubt they’d have come up with it themselves. I’m sure she’ll come bouncing back on another journey of growth and joy next week.

AutumnCrow · 24/09/2024 07:35

I know what you mean, @Bontonbonbon - 'dead cat' is almost too professional for them, and would have required them making a decision and sticking to it, which allegedly they find difficult.

I think it's equally likely that M is 'sick' i.e. upset. And possibly hoping for sympathy. She cannot be oblivious to the outpourings of sympathy shown toward Catherine, so perhaps that's coming into play and we'll shortly have a 'health scare' in the time-honoured fashion of ego-burned celebrities everywhere.

MrsLeonFarrell · 24/09/2024 08:11

Harry used to represent the monarch and the government, now he's a "star". Bit of a come down really.

These events are most effective when used to focus attention on the ordinary people who are working everyday to change things and who need money to fund their work, not the stars themselves.

… and seeing how much folks enjoy hearing about (and it would seem, spending every waking hour posting about) Prince Harry, here’s some more!

… with a lot more to come, given Harry’s schedule this week.

Enjoy! 😂🤩

“The Duke of Sussex spoke of becoming a father for the second time as he addressed The HALO Trust, a charity his mother also famously supported.
Prince Harry is making his mark in New York City for a charity closely associated with Princess Diana's legacy.
On Sept. 23, the Duke of Sussex, 40, stepped out for an event supporting The HALO Trust. The humanitarian group, which is at work in over 30 countries and territories around the world to clear landmines and debris of war, gained international acclaim when the late Princess of Wales walked through an active landmine in Huambo, Angola, in 1997 to call for an international ban.«

That seems infelicitous at best

He's meant to be showcasing the work of the Halo Trust, not using it as a platform to talk about his home life.

The contrast to Diana - who put the spotlight on the cause - is striking , and isn't a good look.

So nice to see Harry sat next to beautifully dressed, elegant, articulate and accomplished women for a change. I hope he wasn't as rude to them as some of the footage suggests.

😂😂😂

A tiny Stonehenge would be symbolic of all he has built since leaving the RF.

Continuing with the more even-keeled coverage of Prince Harry's endeavours at 40.

"The Duke of Sussex's participation in the Concordia Summit—during which the Diana Award panel took place—was a big draw, and his session was at full capacity (including standing room). "I am grateful to Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex, for participating in the 14th iteration of the Concordia Annual Summit," Matthew Swift, Co-founder, President & CEO, Concordia, tells Town & Country. He "showed us that refocusing the conversation on youth empowerment and mental health now will ensure a brighter future for the leaders of tomorrow."

Looks like the dead cat PR strategy is in full swing using PH to divert from the MM bullying expose.

He does look a bit red-eyed and haunted in a few shots - but its likley been an emotionally devasting week for him.

It's just all so obvious isn't it?

forevernumb · 24/09/2024 10:55

Especially on here 😂😂😂😂

Very weird that he's doing all the things on his own, no? Trying to put some distance, striking out on his own.

Even weirder that the People rag - their current mouthpiece of choice - includes what real stars are doing elsewhere in what's supposed to be an article about Harry (presumably to suggest he's still linked to all these people?)

Interesting too that he's back to referencing Diana at every verse end; after all he can't have people forgetting who he is can he?

As an attempt at PR it seems a little, shall we say, obvious ...

TallerSally · 24/09/2024 12:06

Interesting call from Harry to use the term "mental fitness" instead of "mental health"...

I suspect it's an attempt to destigmatize mental health, and take a more proactive stance focused on mental wellbeing and prevention, rather than intervention.

Anyone with some informed views to share?

Some folks must be apoplectic!

How d'you mean? You've lost me here.

Taller - could you explain a bit more in your posts? They seem to consist mainly of links to boring articles - a bit propaganda-ish, tbh, and very little in the way of analysis or criticism. I wish you'd express your views - I for one am not going to trawl through all these links - I'm here for the discussion! A summary with some analysis/critical comments would be good.

Brilliant. Just utterly brilliant. I am in awe.

😂

GrouchyKiwi · 24/09/2024 12:45

@TallerSally I think mental fitness isn't a great term. Mental health is about health, but so many professionals still decouple it from overall health. I don't think changing the health bit of the term is going to help. Mental fitness also makes it sound like you can fix it all yourself, just like getting more exercise, but that's often not at all the case.

Or meanwhile, in the real universe ...

I watched him - he was anxious, confused and confusing.

“…has taken what he thinks is a bold leap into relevance, pretending to focus on issues that transcend borders. His alleged work, however, particularly through the Archewell Foundation, reflects an interest in exploiting the world’s most fragile environments, from Nigeria to Colombia, and harming people and animals. This resonates poorly with a global audience because it is both elitist and money-driven. His supposed commitment to mental health, an issue that last held a stigma a generation ago, is a perfect example of this. By linking his paid job at Better Up with the charity Invictus, Harry is openly monetising the struggles of veterans to line his own pockets with millions of dollars, worldwide.”
