BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

No way! Who would other than at sycophant. What a weird thing to do.

MojoJojo71 · 29/04/2023 23:29

no way

PollyPeptide · 29/04/2023 23:31

Yeah. Why not. I like to join in a good party. 🇬🇧🥳

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 29/04/2023 23:31

Absolutely I will!

GettingThereCharleyBear · 29/04/2023 23:32

Wtf?!? What a ridiculous thing to add to the ceremony - dear god he’s getting fucking desperate! Stupid old man.

Timeforchangeithink · 29/04/2023 23:34

I won't be watching so I guess I won't be swearing allegiance.

weegiemum · 29/04/2023 23:35

Bwahahaha

No!

Xiaoxiong · 29/04/2023 23:35

I did it when I became a British citizen. I'd be sad if people thought it was sycophantic. It was quite an important thing as it was the moment I became a citizen and I belonged here as much as anyone else. I'd be happy to do it again.

You will be in the Abby? It’s very clear it’s only those in the abby, or did you not proper read it and rush to post a thread,…cringe central. 😂

GettingThereCharleyBear · 29/04/2023 23:37

@Xiaoxiong i really don’t understand why they make new citizens do this as those of us born here don’t have to. It strikes me as very odd. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, it’ll be a hard no from me. I’m a Republican.

Kvetching · 29/04/2023 23:39

I won’t be watching.

There’s no way I’d be swearing allegiance. He is not my superior. They can all fuck off as far as I’m concerned.

JamSandle · 29/04/2023 23:43

Yes I will.

Bigbus · 29/04/2023 23:45

Nope - what nonsense. Why would you though?

Rosula · 29/04/2023 23:58

No. Not because I don't feel allegiance, but because the idea seems totally cringey and I would feel a complete idiot.

"Our hope is at that point, when the Archbishop invites people to join in, that people wherever they are, if they're watching at home on their own, watching the telly, will say it out loud - this sense of a great cry around the nation and around the world of support for the King."

So not just people in the Abbey. I think you owe OP an apology?

I won't be joining in.

TillyTollyTully · 30/04/2023 00:15

I think it's you that needs to read it properly. As it's very clearly not just those present who will be encouraged to join in.

chipsarnie · 30/04/2023 00:17

Hell no.

No gods. No masters.

Bring the republic.

ditalini · 30/04/2023 00:21

Bleugh. Is it like saying "I do believe in fairies" when you see Peter Pan at the pantomime?

I don't do that either.

DonnaDonna0 · 30/04/2023 00:24

I hope this is an error, allegiance to a weak man and a queen who we were promised would never be queen - I think definitely not.
I’ve always wanted this country to have a monarchy but not now it’s a joke.

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/04/2023 00:25

No.

Why would I? What does swear allegiance to the king even mean in 2023?Confused

zen1 · 30/04/2023 00:28

It reminds me of when the wedding vows used to have an option for a woman to promise to ‘obey’ her husband. Totally outdated.

nationallampoons · 30/04/2023 00:29

No.

FannyFifer · 30/04/2023 00:30

I would rather shit in my hands & clap.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/04/2023 00:32

I'm interested in the spectacle and the fact that this is our country's history in the making; but I still can't quite get over the fact that, in a 'democratic' country, we are told who is (theoretically) in charge, and will be for the next however many decades; and we have no say in the matter one way or another.

I most definitely will not be swearing any allegiance to this man. Aside from some of the very questionable things that he's done over the years and unsavoury people he's been closely involved with, they're asking people to swear allegiance to his heirs as well - presumably including those who have not yet been born. That's got to be very dangerous - imagine if one of his heirs turned out to have the same moral stance as Charles's brother (the non-sweating one) or his former close northern DJ friend and advisor, and you'd already sworn your everlasting allegiance to them.

Funny

But no
