BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun

Viewing figures have little to do with support
Most tvs will be on in care homes and other public places with few watching

I think the bbc took a few mins of viewing as ' watching '

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 09:29

I generally just watch for the parades and what people are wearing and don't bother with the wordy bits so I will probably miss that bit anyway

Mephisneon · 30/04/2023 09:31

Not a chance. We should do what the French did. I'm embarrassed at our collective peasant brain and love/obsession with them. Fucking awful people.

GoodChat · 30/04/2023 09:27

I won't be, but I have no issue with people who choose to.

I'd have done it for the Queen but this feels different to me. Although, she had a lifetime of impact. I'm sure people felt indifferent to her when she started her reign, too.

I think people were interested in the Queen from when she was a young woman, even before she was crowned. If I remember rightly, Anne Frank mentions her and Margaret in her diary. I think she said something about their beauty and wonders who they will marry.

User8907 · 30/04/2023 09:31

God no. I bet he tries to add a line that we all must hail to Queen Camilla as well 🙄

HeadacheEarthquake · 30/04/2023 09:34

We'll all be watching to see if grim Andrew will be sweating his allegiance Wink

IClaudine · 30/04/2023 09:35

Charles is never going to command the love that Liz did. This is the beginning of the end for the monarchy, I think. I hope.

DoggosAloud · 30/04/2023 09:35

Surely most people watching or in the Abbey support the idea of the monarchy and pay allegiance to the sovereign?

People watching doesn’t mean they support the monarchy. They might. But people watch these things out of curiosity and a variety of other reasons.

I heard they are putting in a massive Pizza Express order for the after party.

Roussette · 30/04/2023 08:39

Andrew's top notch then.

Andrew is not Charles heir.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 09:40

Charles has broken with tradition again by being anointed completely hidden completely from view .

I wonder if they will keep the wording from Elizabeth's anointing 70 years ago :

"Be thy head anointed with holy oil: as kings, priests, and prophets were anointed. And as Solomon was anointed king by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, so be you anointed, blessed and consecrated Queen over the Peoples, whom the Lord thy God hath given thee to rule and govern

Over the peoples! Whom god has GIVEN THEE !
This isn't just pomp . A coronation is very different from an inauguration.
It is an attempt to associate the 'king' with the divine .
In 2023 - this is what our 250 million is paying for

I did it when I became a British citizen. I'd be sad if people thought it was sycophantic. It was quite an important thing as it was the moment I became a citizen and I belonged here as much as anyone else. I'd be happy to do it again.

I think being British we are simply embarrassed at the idea of any kind of public display. I support the monarchy, in a 'better the devil you know', kind of way, but I would never swear allegiance to anyone.

No

Andrew is not Charles heir.

He's in the line of succession. Just like Harry

Yes I know - it's ridiculous! We need to grow up and move with the times and not believe in fairies.

Lonelycrab · 30/04/2023 09:47

Nope

AutumnCrow · 30/04/2023 09:47

That’s a ‘go fuck yourself’ from me. Coarse perhaps, but honest.

I’ll wager many cameras will be trained on Harry at the critical moment to see if he moves his lips.

(I presume Meghan got the tip-off about the planned script and won’t do it. And I bet Jill Biden doesn’t.)

Arcane imperial and colonial nonsense wrapped in a miasma of Anglican theocracy.

O tempora o mores!

Littleworkaholic · 29/04/2023 23:37

You will be in the Abby? It’s very clear it’s only those in the abby, or did you not proper read it and rush to post a thread,…cringe central. 😂

It is "abbey" not "abby" and had you read the article it is not just for those in the ABBEY! Unless it has become a TARDIS and can fit in millions simultaneously watching TV, as that is what the article says.

And under no circumstances will I be swearing allegiance to a doddery old man whose only merit is his birth. Him and heirs can all do one. Anyway, I won't be in the country, never mind watching TV. With great foresight I booked two weeks away from today over a year ago 😀

BitOutOfPractice · 30/04/2023 10:07

I’m not saying the king has never been swapped (@mathanxiety id have thought the abdication would’ve been a more relevant and recent historical reference). But a king has never been deposed because the ordinary people didn’t like his morals. Or preferred his mother. There are plenty of example of crap, weak, unpopular monarchs reigning on till death though. And despite all of them, we still have the institution of the monarchy. Which was my point. It’s not the person I object to particularly. I am completely ambivalent about Charles. It’s the institution that I want rid of. And I will not be pledging allegiance to anyone, or bending my knee and doffing my cap to an anachronism.

LadyKenya · 30/04/2023 10:13

No, what an absurd suggestion.

Yes the words are pretty much the same. : ‘’And as Solomon was anointed king by Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, so may you be anointed, blessed, and consecrated King over the peoples, whom the Lord your God has given you to rule and govern; in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Order of service

It is quite mad in places for sure but based in history. Perhaps they could have worked on that wording - they have changed quite a lot I think.

I thought they might have cameras trained on Harry for the allegiance bit too. It wouldn’t be appropriate for Jill Biden to say it.

@Novella4 it doesn’t really make any difference about the viewing figures. All the tvs on in care homes and pubs with people not watching won’t have people not making or making pledges of allegiance in front of them.

@DoggosAloud yes lots of people will only be watching out of curiosity or whatever and no one has to say anything. I imagine the most stanch republicans won’t watch though unless they want to be annoyed. Would they make their point better by watching and critiquing (and being outraged about being offered the opportunity to say something supportive and not doing it) or by not watching and maybe joining the protests?

Protests will be allowed so this can’t be compared other totalitarian regimes.

Poshjock · 30/04/2023 10:31

I don’t feel the need. I swore on the bible to serve Her Majesty, her heirs and successors and I continue to serve under the crown so it’s a given really. As I’m there I doubt there will be a chance to do this.

How embarrassing for you. Maybe report your own post and ask for it to be taken down?

It's a poster with poor reading and comprehension skills.
