BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

This made me laugh. The world's gone mad! C&C look alike on GMB, and no I don't watch that channel, it popped up on a feed. Good likeness?!

Roll on Tuesday

You tell me your recommended list of morning TV progs. I would hate to make a social gaffe. 😂

feellikeanalien · 04/05/2023 13:06

I think a lot of British people whether they are for the monarchy or indifferent find the idea of swearing allegiance to anyone/anything quite an anachronism in this day and age.

I remember going to a church service in the US on the fourth of July when were visiting relatives and, as a teenager, squirming in embarrassment when they all pledged allegiance with their hands on their hearts.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 04/05/2023 13:29

I don't think this fits the current Zeitgeist in the UK at all.

Can we not just all have a communal swear instead? That would be cathartic after the past few years.

I don't make recommendations!

Never watched GMB or GB News who are sinking fast as they are disgusting!

Can we all chant Not my king, not my thing collectively at the right time? Are we going to get alerts on our phones like the emergency thingy last weekend to remind us to pledge our allegiance? What will happen in Tesco? Will it be like the two minutes silence each November ?

I'd like to know I've got the right moment to assert my right to dissent.

😅 I'm tempted to bang a saucepan but neighbours might think that is support.

What surprised me is my nearest town which is small. I thought it would be covered in paraphernalia. A few weedy flags draped on a couple of shops but that's it!

AnnieSnap · 04/05/2023 17:11

@Roussette I’m pleased to note my suburban area has no signs of Coronation nonsense 👍

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/05/2023 11:26

Loving the way some are trying to blame it on Welby - as if this would have been suggested/agreed without consultation with Charles Hmm

The "whipping boy" lives ...

BREAKING - pledgers need to stand down with the oath as it is an abhorrence. Meddling by the Archbishop it would appear. As you were.

Haha yes, Jonathon Dimbleby saying how unlike Charles this would be and he's known him a long time! I saw him on this morning.

Does he and Charles think we're stupid?!

Obviously Charles agreed this. It went down like a cup of cold sick, Charles had a meltdown about that, and blamed the Archbishop and told Dimbleby to get out there and say this because that's all he could do.

I bet tempers are very frayed within the Palace at the moment.

And now even the weather's forecasted to be horrible Sad

Am hoping it stays off until most have seen the main events; there'll be a lot of elderly on the streets and people really don't need a drenching

Even I'm hoping it doesn't rain, the more elderly people who have slept out for 2 nights already will be seriously in trouble with an added downpour.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/05/2023 11:58

Exactly, Roussette - it may not be my thing, but I wouldn't wish that on anyone

It is a choice, no one is forcing pensioners to sleep on the streets, they can go home and watch on telly.

Course it's a choice. But their heart is ruling their head. Seeing some interviewed this morning, it's almost like they'd rather die on the streets than miss having a glimpse of something.

Absolutely totally fervent adoring, to the point of ridiculousness.

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 12:02

Lol . I've just read that Welby kicked back .
Good for him

GettingThereCharleyBear · 29/04/2023 23:32

Wtf?!? What a ridiculous thing to add to the ceremony - dear god he’s getting fucking desperate! Stupid old man.

Is this standard? Did this happen with QEII in 1953 ?

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 12:08

No . It's new

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 12:08

It's all ancient ritual until it isn't

Puzzledandpissedoff · 05/05/2023 12:09

Any chance of a link, Novella? I know Welby was defending the ridiculous suggestion on Tuesday but can't find anything for today?

BTW I've just dared to read the best-rated comments in the Fail, and would suggest adherents of the CofE keep well away ... it's clearly unfair to heap all the blame on Welby, but it's not stopped the gullible trying

Novella4 · 05/05/2023 12:14

It's was in the body of the text Vera put up I think

Welby said it was all collaborative - Charles seemed to be trying to say it was being foisted on his unwilling humble self

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 05/05/2023 12:18

No time for either Welby or Windsor, neither of them have done anything to deserve my respect.

I will still be shouting Not my king, not my thing at an appropriate moment. Sadly the only person likely to hear me is DH, although there will sheep and possibly feral goats around too.

vera99 · 05/05/2023 12:18

Abhorrent is a very strong word to use. As others have said Welby is the fall guy - nobody could be serious that the King wouldn't have gone through the order of service in full many times. So we can add liar to his list of sins but we knew that anyway. One could say it is abhorrent for the King to blame his Archbishop for the detail of his speech. Like his weakness with Harry he scuttles off quite quickly when confronted with something that questions his authority or his deemed popularity.
