BBC link: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

Apparently during the coronation service, we'll all being asked to swear "true allegiance" to Charles and his heirs.

That's a no from me.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

Good grief. What a hostage to fortune this makes him. The 90-odd percent who don't do this will remember the coronation as the day when their silence acknowledged that he is not their king.

Mightyouandiconfabulate · 30/04/2023 08:21

Absolutely fucking not.

Random789 · 30/04/2023 08:25

If I just shout out 'Nah, mate" do I get back my contribution to the £100 million public funding of the coronation?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 30/04/2023 08:26

Can we have an alternative collective chant at the same time, given as much airtime as the pledge of allegiance?

Millions chanting "NOT MY KING, NOT MY THING" would be far better imo.

This is a GREAT idea.

‘A great cry of support for the King’

🤪🤪🤪

deluded old idiot. ‘Support’ needs to be earned, and if you have to ask……

DonnaDonna0 · 30/04/2023 08:29

@BitOutOfPractice
And the Monarchy and the hereditary line as never been questioned and changed in the past if someone was or became unsuitable?
If you’re not fit to be the king or queen you simply shouldn’t be it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/04/2023 08:30

Will I fuck. That lot are no better than anyone else.

Random789 · 30/04/2023 08:33

According to the article, this 'homage of the people' replaces a similar acclamation made by lords. Just imagine if 90% of the lords in the abbey were silent and eye-rolling, or shouting out jokes, at this point (as most of us will be). It would probably be the start of a very short and bloodless civil war which saw him compulsorily retired to a small castle with a nice garden.

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 08:33

No, I don't like the bit about 'and his heirs' which would include Harry.

It's £250 000 000 now

Andrew's top notch then.

PolkaDotMankini · 30/04/2023 08:42

It makes sense for the hereditary peers to do it. They're part of the same system. But the public? Nope.

You will be in the Abby? It’s very clear it’s only those in the abby, or did you not proper read it and rush to post a thread,…cringe central. 😂

How embarrassing for you. Maybe report your own post and ask for it to be taken down?

No way. Time to ditch the monarchy and for the UK to become a republic.

It certainly is "cringe central" for that poster, isn't it?

MrsFinkelstein · 30/04/2023 09:21

It's an invitation to do so, not a summons.

Those who want to can. Those who don't are under no obligation.

I can't summon up the necessary froth you seem to be looking for OP. Sorry.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 30/04/2023 09:24

I quite like the idea - including everyone in the service not just a small group of dukes. A bit like they do now for weddings in the Church of England when everyone says they will support the couple in their marriage - I guess that came in around 10 to 20 years ago. I would feel a bit silly doing it in my living room but it will be good that the congregation will all say it in my opinion. And I think it would make those at a big screen event feel more part of it too.

Surely most people watching or in the Abbey support the idea of the monarchy and pay allegiance to the sovereign? Otherwise you probably won’t be watching. Good to have the option to be included if you want. It specifically says those that want to….

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 30/04/2023 09:25

Christ no. Fuck that!

Off with their heads🇫🇷

Time for a republic.

GoodChat · 30/04/2023 09:27

I won't be, but I have no issue with people who choose to.

I'd have done it for the Queen but this feels different to me. Although, she had a lifetime of impact. I'm sure people felt indifferent to her when she started her reign, too.
