I was thinking about some tv shows I loved but realise that I hated the main characters in! My initial list is:

OITNB- I didn’t always hate Piper but I definitely did at times throughout!

Breaking Bad- hate Walter so much.

This Is England- I class Shaun as the main character and can’t stand him.

What about you?

Oh and I only watched the first series or two of Virgin River but that nosy cow who had to interfere in absolutely everything. Hope was her name.

There are threads about Virgin river where everyone agrees. She must be part producer or something cos they keep giving her story lines and almost killed her off but didn't. Other characters all indulge her over and over again. I can't imagine someone like her having any friends in real life.

I dislike both of the main leads in Virgin River. Drab!

I wanted to love Doctor Foster, and enjoyed the plot itself, but Suranne Jones played her terribly. Every word spoken so breathily, constantly pawing at her own hair and face, and just devoid of personality.

Obviously she also became a bit crazy, which I might have sympathised with had she not been so insufferable to begin with.

Couldn’t even finish it.

Also the tossing the hair back and licking the lips a lot

Oh yes Beth. Had to stop watching

She really thinks shes the cool hot crap

I would say, 'Awful, yes. Still human though.' Grin

Agree, Harriet Walter is monumental in it.
And Matthew Macfadyen is a revelation.

Completely agree. Lived for Harriet Walter. Shiv and Roman were awful but AMAZING; Kendall was just awful (apart from the brilliant rap). Interestingly, Logan himself was just meh…

In Kendall’s storyline with the car crash and the subsequent visit to the family, the scene when he’s sitting in the other room as the visit takes place is jaw-dropping.
Logan had his moment, I thought, when he was talking to Kendall about reading history books in bed with Marcia. He loved her.

My one criticism of Succession was there needed to be more of Harriet Walter’s character

Slow Horses. I don't like the character played by Gary Oldman but a lot of the humour derives from him being a selfish slob.

Ohh, Gary Oldman, he's my dirty crush, especially in Slow Horses.

Yes! I would have watched a spin-off that was totally about her character!

There was another series where they just ramped up that for her and she just was nasty to everyone for no reason and stomping around the place. Just bizarre

Me too. He’s absolutely revolting but that voice. He was on the Table Manners podcast and the hosts requested that he tell them to F off using his Lamb voice, and they were in heaven. Jessie Ware’s mum was entranced.

Agree!

Then again, maybe we wouldn't have been able to stand much more of her 🤔Grin

In the most recent couple of seasons, I think, his character has changed quite a lot. He's always been hilariously insulting to his team, but there used to be a lightness of touch to it. Recently I feel like he's just being mean.
IMO the writing has gone downhill generally. It's a pity as the cast are fabulous, and the characters were when we were first introduced to them.

Here you go. It’s filmed in The Dorchester and is a fabulous walk through his life and career.

Weirdly, I'm a fervent anti monarchist but I love The Crown. That's basically the entire cast. 😆

I looked it up as I've never heard of it. Do you mean Billy Bob Thornton? I love him as an actor

No Billy Bob Thornton character was great in Landman It was his wife Angela and daughter Ainsley that spoilt the show for me.

Triskellion75 · 18/06/2026 23:52

I've just finished Rivals and I bloody hate Maud O'Hara. What a bastard.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/06/2026 00:11

I agree with Maud O Hara. Ugh.
Also Matt Smith in House of Dragon.

MissyB1 · 14/06/2026 16:33

Definitely Carrie in sex in the city - she ruined it!
James Nesbitt ruins every show he’s in for me! I will see a new show advertised that sounds great, then I see he’s got the bloody lead role aargh!!😡

I could have written this post! Strongly feel the same about both!

VivienneDelacroix · 19/06/2026 01:38

I agree with you, OP, about OITNB. I couldn't stand Piper.

Similar situation with The L Word, Jenny was awful.

June in The Handmaids Tale also irritates me. She's so selfish and reckless.

Amanda in Amandaland, but that's different, you're but supposed to like her.

Orville. I hate that duck.

Oops sorry, just realised you said wife & daughter. He's a great actor but even he might struggle playing those parts 🤣

Industry on BBC iPlayer.
Amazing drama about the finance industry.

EVERYBODY is a terrible person!

Urgentbiscuitrequired · 19/06/2026 10:15

Surely Ozark wins this one? The entire show was full of psychopaths.
