I was thinking about some tv shows I loved but realise that I hated the main characters in! My initial list is:

OITNB- I didn’t always hate Piper but I definitely did at times throughout!

Breaking Bad- hate Walter so much.

This Is England- I class Shaun as the main character and can’t stand him.

What about you?

You basically don’t like any characters called Ross then 😂

I'm trying to think if there was another Ross in anything else that I actually did like... nope, I can't disprove this! 😅

Grey’s Anatomy - Meredith

Tillow4ever · 13/06/2026 20:53

June from The Handmaid’s Tale was really quite unlikeable a lot of the time.

Succession. They are all absolutely loathsome and I still loved the show

Actually, that’s true. Literally everyone is spectacularly awful, and yet it was a brilliant series.

Triskellion75 · 13/06/2026 21:00

Baldrick in Blackadder. Just got stupider and stupider.

Roland in Schitts Creek.

Manuel in Fawlty Towers.

StoppedToTieHisShoe · 13/06/2026 21:04

Schitt's Creek

I really could not stand the character of the Mayor. Everything irked me about him. I fast forwarded through all his scenes, and it actually didn't affect how I followed the story.

It was annoying because I loved evey other character, especially Ted and Alexis. For made up people they really had my heart. Well Alexis the most, loved her arc.

Silverbirchleaf · 13/06/2026 21:07

Robin in ‘How I met your mother’

and another vote for Andie McDowell in Four Weddings.

Also wasn’t keen on Daphne in the first series of Brigerton.

Brokedownpalace · 14/06/2026 00:03

Yes to June in Handmaid's and Walter White in Breaking Bad!

Well, they’re all awful but they all have points when you can see that they’re human. That’s its genius.

Babies. The main male actors voice was incredibly annoying. And a total affectation as he has been in loads of other things and spoken perfectly normally. God it was irritating. "Posaiiiiv"

This. I loathed every one of them.

Dozer · 14/06/2026 09:09

The writing of the Carrie character was the problem in Four Weddings. The performance was wooden but Andie McD was much better in other things - Greencard, for example.

Human, yes. Still awful, though. And played by some stonkingly good actors, even in minor roles. Every scene Harriet Walter was in was astonishing.

The odd thing is that the character is quite different in the original script, which is online — she’s much more obviously sexually confident, even brash. Her first line is when the priest at the first wedding asks if anyone objects to the marriage and she says, audibly, ‘I suppose [the groom — Angus?] being a terrible lay doesn’t count?’ Then she takes off her hat and tights outside the church and dumps them in a litter bin on her way to the reception.

Something happened to the character on the way to the film as released, as well as casting Andie McDowell.

Elizabeth Keen in the Blacklist prevents me from rewatching it. Technically the main character is probably Reddington so does this count?

second that.

Wasn't the character originally written as British?

Did they change this in order to cast a well-known American actress?

I would say, 'Awful, yes. Still human though.' Grin

Agree, Harriet Walter is monumental in it.
And Matthew Macfadyen is a revelation.

Gilmore girls. Hates Lorelei. Silly cow.

Shes such a bellend

Her big problem was that her mum was a bit sexist 🙄🙄😄😄

mumofoneAloneandwell · 14/06/2026 14:58

Now I love greys anatomy

But meredith and cristina were mean girls 😄

One thing that gets me was when Cristina had ptsd from the shooting episode

Shes looking at wedding magazines going 'i wish i'd chosen to be simple, noone holds a gun to the head of a simple girl' 😭😭😭

Like sorry for wanting to look nice on my bloody wedding day 😭😫

Agreed, I loved the show but my god she was exhausting and trying too hard to be a cool mum. Like having a sleepover with her daughter and her new dorm mates on their first day of uni. Cringe.

Really unlikeable character and terrible actress.

Her daughter Margaret Qualley is way more talented which is an interesting reversal of the nepobaby dynamic.

AM is actually very good in Groundhog Day, also helps that her character is very sweet

NewDogOwner · 14/06/2026 16:09

Will and Grace. Grace was grating.

Thebinisrightthere · 14/06/2026 16:11

I found the character (and actress) of Eve in Killing Eve very annoying. She had literally 1 facial expression. I was definitely rooting for Villeneuve (sp?)

I wanted to love Doctor Foster, and enjoyed the plot itself, but Suranne Jones played her terribly. Every word spoken so breathily, constantly pawing at her own hair and face, and just devoid of personality.

Obviously she also became a bit crazy, which I might have sympathised with had she not been so insufferable to begin with.

Couldn’t even finish it.

She ruined it didn’t she. It was a good premise which she spoilt. I’ve never understood how she keeps getting all the leading roles. She is the same in every part.

vagnotwhatitwas · 14/06/2026 16:25

Absolutely loved The Good Wife, but couldn't stand Alicia. Loved Diane on the other hand.

I watched Gilmore Girls all the way through twice. First on own and years later with youngest daughter.

We rewatched some recently after the new episodes (awful) came out. This time round we agreed that our sympathies were entirely with Emily and Richard and thought Lorelei was a real pain. Rory and Dean were also pretty awful in retrospect.
