What’s the best TV Series you’ve watched in the last 5 years?

For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

@CatChant How could I forget Ghosts, and yes Lockwood & Co, couldn't remember the name of that one

Roxy69 · 13/05/2025 15:03

Detectorists, rewatching.

Yes! I was looking for Wisting last night to continue watching, but couldn’t find it. I started it a while ago and really enjoyed it even though it had subtitles, which normally do my head in. Haha
Was it on iPlayer?

I ended up watching A good girl’s guide to murder instead, which I really enjoyed!

Edited

I watched it all on player (minus series 6, which I can't find anywhere) I think, but I just looked and I can only see series 3 there now.

I was late to Ghosts because I thought it looked like a quite sort of shit sitcom. Then I caught an episode and thought, yeah I was right and somehow I watched another and oh how could I ever have not got it! It's quietly brilliant. I've laughed hard and really, really cried too. It was a real gift to have that on our TV and I'm a total weirdo because I had/have the biggest crush on Robin.

Have you watched the US version? Not as good - too dominated by the Hamilton type soldier - but worth watching.

Oneearringlost · 13/05/2025 16:50

Save Me and Save Me Too on Amazon Prime; you have to pay for it but it's more than worth the money, imo.
It's Lenny James, he created, wrote and stars in it.
Some beautiful tender moments; quite difficult to watch in parts. The only character I found frustrating was Suranne Jones, miscast, in my opinion, otherwise perfect. And some great music.
I really felt quite bereft after finishing Series 2, like I'd lost some old friends. Has Stephen Graham in it.

CatHairEveryWhereNow · 13/05/2025 17:02

I liked Lockwood & Co but it is one season only. It made me go and buy the books which were really good.

I kept being recommended One peice - live action by netflicks - I wasn't sure what to expect but once I settled to it really did like it - not sure if they are doing more.

Netflix has also got me watching anime now - and have liked Spy x family, The Apothecary Diaries and currently watching and liking Frieren. Kids and DH like Arcane but I couldn't get into that one.

I didn't really get on with UK Ghosts it was okay in background - and while like clips of US one when we sta down to watch didn't really like.

The The Goes Wrong Show series on iPlayer is brilliant - DH puts it on when he had a bad day never fails to make him laugh.

FagsMagsandBags · 13/05/2025 18:27

@Arran2024 I have looked at a couple of episodes of the US Ghosts but it just hasn't got the magic of ours and I think that's because so much of the UK cast are a true ensemble who've worked as a team for years and you can feel that connection.

CatChant · 15/05/2025 18:30

Lockwood & Co was one of the top-rated shows on Netflix. We had all read and loved the books so were ready to be hyper-critical, but we thought the adaptation and the actors were wonderful.

So we were astounded and very disappointed when there wasn’t a second series. In fact we cancelled our Netflix and told them it was because they had dropped Lockwood & Co!

We would have loved to see the haunted department store - the description in the books gave us all the creeping horrors.

We tried the first episode of the US Ghosts but turned it off halfway through.

One foreign adaptation of a UK series I’d like to see is the Russian version of Life on Mars. Apparently with this one in the USSR past the police did things by the rule-book whereas the modern ones were very much operating in Wild West terms so very topsy-turvey by comparison with the original. I don’t think it was ever available to watch in an English language version.

ClaudiaDark · 15/05/2025 19:22

Like you @CatChant I also really loved Lockwood & Co and was gutted when Netflix cancelled it.

I'm currently binging Mad Men. I love it. It's one of those series that you want to watch again without having seen it. I'm trying to eke it out but it's so good, I'm trying to limit how much I watch per night. I'm just about to start season 5.

I never saw it back in the day. Since getting streaming I've watched it twice. Fabulous series.
John Hamm was asked recently if the role could move on in time. He said that the story was complete.

Oneearringlost · 16/05/2025 09:38

Caliphate in Netflix, sorry if it's already been mentioned, we watched it after it was recommended on here.
Swedish series, real edge-of-your-seat stuff.
About radicalisation. Ever so good.

Succession is the one that I urge other people to watch if they’ve not seen it already. Easily head and shoulders above everything else.

In response to a PP it definitely took me a few episodes to really get into both the characters and tone. You get beyond seeing the characters in one dimension as hateful, rich egomaniacs and there so much nuance and so many different dynamics.

@marmitegirl01 Paradise is DEFINITELY the best thing I’ve seen this year

I enjoyed it had me wanting to know what happened next and has set things up nicely for the next series, but also ended satisfactorily if you didn't have another series. Which is not easy to do.

Its genius is that they're so vile but you can see that they're human.

Watched Marianne on C4 Walter Presents this week (6 eps). It's partly a standard police/Bones-type procedural which is a bit meh, but the other parts of it are sublime: a bizarre sub-plot case each ep, plus the central character & her interactions with her colleagues & clients. She's not your usual female lead, & it's great to see that & charmingly funny at times. French with subtitles.

Does anyone know if/where one can see May 33rd? I saw it when it was originally broadcast but can't find a way to see it now. I remember it as being quite bleak & tragic, & I fancy seeing it again.
