For me it’s the German Series Dark on Netflix and the American series 1883 which is Paramount + but has now turned up on Netflix.

Dark which was about time travel really made you think and 1883 about Pioneer life/Cowboys was just quietly beautiful

I posted about that earlier - loved it

Forgotten about Dopesick just amazing but don’t watch it if you are feeling down it’s a painful but jaw dropping series.

PeacockMansion · 12/05/2025 18:58

The English with Emily Blunt on iPlayer

campfirenights · 12/05/2025 19:28

Money Heist for me. Such a clever plot with twists and turns that you just don’t see coming. Brilliant cast and great characters. Don’t be put off that it’s in Spanish, best to watch with English subtitles and Spanish audio. By the end of the series I felt like I was bilingual 😆

mizu · 12/05/2025 19:30

Another shoutout for Andor. If you are into Star Wars 😁

Season one was phenomenal and season two (prequel to Rogue One) is turning out to be just as good. One of those series that you’re equally desperate to watch but don’t want to finish.

longtompot · 12/05/2025 20:10

The Bridge

Slow Horses

Almas Not Normal

Killing Eve

Happy Valley

Justified
Succession
The OA

All brilliant in their own way.

One show I haven't seen mentioned is Midnight Mass on netflix. I watched it thinking it was going to be a standard vampire story, but it turned out to be far stranger and more beautiful. It's one of the few TV shows that have really stayed with me.

Just scrolled through pages to see if anyone had mentioned Midnight Mass. I thought it was amazing.

(so many others on this thread I’ve loved and got some new series on a list now to check out)

GeneralWaste · 12/05/2025 21:29

Can’t believe no one’s mentioned Our Flag Means Death! Stede, a gentleman pirate, meets and falls in love with the notorious Blackbeard. It’s funny, quirky and poignant. It’s one of those shows that makes you feel really good after watching. It was a BBC show I think.

GripGetter · 12/05/2025 22:13

I came on to say Dark! The best series I've ever watched.

Arran2024 · 12/05/2025 23:00

Has anyone mentioned Wisting? It's a Norwegian crime drama. I loved it. Also Shetland and Annika with Nicola Walker.

Where can I watch this?

CrewOfTheRevenge · 13/05/2025 08:49

@GeneralWastei mentioned it! Username gives it away! It’s a crazy ride, an utterly sublime easy watch.

All of Hugo Blick's work is really captivating, IMO. Not always easy to watch, and sometimes a bit obscure, but I think he's a genuine original.

Not the "best" as in particularly deep, but 2 very enjoyable, female led legal series currently showing are Matlock and Elsbeth. Plenty of humour, interesting plot lines, crime/case of the week together with an overriding story arc, and easy on the eye (interiors, city scapes and clothes, if you like all things New York).

Sky Atlantic are currently showing an early 1990s police procedural called Homicide, Life On The Streets. It's the pre-cursor to The Wire, though not as complex or brutal, although it shares much of the same dark humour. It's a different crime each episode rather than a whole series story arc like The Wire. The cast/acting is fantastic, and it's fun spotting all the big name guest stars, as well as less well known actors who became popular in later 1990s series. It has a bit of a late 80s/Hill Street Blues vibe about it and a little bit of Cagney and Lacey with regard to the female characters.

Some angel uploaded all of Cagney and Lacey onto Youtube a couple of years ago, which I devoured. So, so good. I actually think depictions of strong female protagonists was better in the 1980s than in the 1990s.

Homicide is the dog's bollocks. Seriously classy, subtle and layered. Amazing ensemble acting, I agree. There's an episode based on Edgar Allan Poe stories!

I'm quite a fan of The Detectorists.

For sheer entertainment value and daftness, Traitors Grin

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on prime. It's a very good drama with Sigourney Weaver.

Wolf like Me on prime.

I also loved The way Home on Hallmark, I binged it while in the US last year. Susan Sarandin is in it.

Yes! I was looking for Wisting last night to continue watching, but couldn’t find it. I started it a while ago and really enjoyed it even though it had subtitles, which normally do my head in. Haha
Was it on iPlayer?

I ended up watching A good girl’s guide to murder instead, which I really enjoyed!
